    OureffortstomaketheXaviereducationatparwith

    international standards started many years ago .

    We adopted the Singapore Method in Math andSciencein2008,theuseof the HanyuShuipingKaoshi

    (HSK)ortheBeijinglanguageproficiencyexam(2007),

    and the iPSLE (2007)asbenchmarking too ls,among

    manyotherimprovements.

    In the coming years , we wi ll continue to seek

    new deve lopments and engage in educationalexper imentation to find even better ways o f

    offering our students a truly g lobal education .

    Inanageofrapidchange,XavierSchoolhasintroduced

    many innovationsnotonly to remain relevantasan

    educational institutionbutmore importantly, tobe

    responsivetoourstudentsneeds.

    Last schoo l year , we opened the Internat iona l

    BaccalaureateDiplomaProgramtoour High 3 students.

    Throughthisprogram,weprovideanopportunity for

    selectedstudentstopursueanalternativepre-university

    programrecognizedworldwide. Atthesametime,we

    pursuenewmethodsofteachingandassessmentthat

    canonlyenhance theeducationofall our students.

    TheXavierChinaExperience(XCE)sentarecordnumber

    ofstudentslastyear.Thesuccessofthisprogramprompted

    us tomake thisuniqueexperiencemandatory forallXaverians.WenowhavethreeXCEprograms inplace:

    Guangzhoufor Grade7,Kunmingfor High2(from2011),

    andBeijingfor High4. Startingwiththe Grade7class

    ofSY2011-2012,theXCEnowbecomesaprerequisite

    forgraduation.

    Anew development I am very excited about isourpartnershipwiththeTonyBlairFoundationsFacetoFaith

    program. Thisprogram, a seriesofdialogue among

    studentsfromdifferentculturesonmoralandreligious

    topics,allowsourboystoreachoutbeyondtheconfines

    oftheclassroomto learn fromtheirpeersaroundthe

    world.

    Last summer , 41 IB students spent five weeks inBeijing. Their schedule included Mandarin classeseverymorningand intheafternoon,lessonsin Math,English,Science,andSATreviewclass .Tripstovariousplaces likemuseums,BeijingUniversity, Great Wall ,

    Xian,andmanyother importantcultural siteswereamongtheoff-campusactivities.

    IB TEACHERS

    Atpresent,acomplementof 20 IB-trained teachersare involved in theprogram.The IBO requireseveryIB teacher to unde rgo a series of extens ive andspecialized training . In add ition, each teacher is

    expectedtomaximize learningthroughthe IBOnlineCurr iculum Center (OCC ). Through the OCC , the IBteacherhasaccess to theprofess ionalonline forumandaglobalnetworkofIBpractitioners.

    Currently,studiesarebeingdonetoexploreofferingtwo

    moreIBprogramsinXavierSchool.ThesearethePrimary

    YearsProgram(PYP)andthe MiddleYearsProgram(MYP).

    Thiswilllikelybeimplementedintandemwiththeshift

    toDepEdsdirectivetofollowaK+12basiceducation

    program.

    ThePYP (for studentsaged 3 to12) focuseson the

    developmentof thewholechildasan inquirerwho

    can constructmeaningprincipally through inquiry-

    basedlearning.The MYP(forstudentsaged11-16)is

    designedtohelpstudentsfindasenseofbelonging

    in the ever-changing and increasingly interrelated

    worldand to fosterapositiveattitude to learning.

    THEXAVIERCHINA EXPERIENCE(XCE)

    Theoldestandmostestablishedoftheseendeavorsisthe

    XavierChinaExperience(XCE).AlreadyconnectedtoChina

    throughouruniquehistoryandidentityasaChinese-Filipinoschoo l, Xavier aims to enhance and deepen student

    understandingofChinathroughtheXCE.

    First introduced in2004,theXCEsendsselectedGrade7

    students to live inChina forsixweeks tostudyChinese

    languageandculture. Duringthistime,studentsspendtwo

    hours in Chinese class every day, take culture classes

    conducted in Mandarin,andgoonweekly fieldtrips toculturalsites.

    Studentsarealso required to study theusual subjects,

    followingaspecialacademicprogramdesignedtocapitalize

    ontheirdailyexperiencesinChina.Forexample,students

    interviewChineseresidents fortheirsocialstudiesclass ,

    investigate the effectiveness of Chinese products for

    scienceprojects,andreflectontheirexperiences inCLE.

    TherealpoweroftheXCE,however,liesnotinitsacademic

    designbutinitsformativeimpact. Asitisthefirsttimefor

    manyofour students tobeaway fromhome, theyare

    compelledtobecomemoreindependent. Asaresult,many

    studentscitetheXCEastheirmostmeaningfulexperience

    in

    school.

    accommodates130studentswhoparticipateeveryyear.

    XCE:BEIJING FORHIGHSCHOOL

    ForstudentswhodidnothaveachancetojoinXCEin Grade

    7,theXCE:Beijing wasinitiatedin2008,thistimefor High4students. Inadditiontotheintensivelanguagestudyand

    cultural exposure , academic courses are des igned

    accordingtointerdisciplinarythemes. Real-worldexperiences

    andassessmentsaregiven,suchasvisitstomuseumsthat

    promotesustainabledevelopment,researchanddiscussions

    withFilipinoandChinesebusinessmen,presentationsatthe

    Philipp ineembassy,and interviewswith local residents.

    The High 4 students find the formative expe riences

    tobemostmemorable. Participantstreasuretheirweekly

    exploration, aday inwhich students explore Beijing

    ontheirownterms. Workinginsmallgroupsandguidedby

    ateacher,theychoosewheretogo,whattodofortheday,

    andhowtonavigatethecityusingonlypublicbusesand

    subways. Invariably,students lose theirway. They takethewrong turn, get on thewrong bus, and can take

    hoursfindingtheirwayback. Studentscitethesemoments

    --dealing with unscripted , real-li fe problems--as the

    most significant educational expe riences of the trip.

    WhilethetwoXCEprogramscanaccommodateupto230

    students, somebatcheshaveasmanyas 300 students.

    Furthermore,itisdifficultforourIBstudentstoleavetheir

    studiesduringtheacademicyear.Thesolutionwastoadd

    onemoreXCE.

    XaviersthirdXCE,theXCE:Yunnan,willbelaunchedthisyear

    forH2students. SetinsouthwestChina,Yunnanprovince

    hasoneof themostecologicallydiverse landscapeson

    earth.Snow-coveredmountainsatthebaseoftheTibetan

    plateaulietothenorth,whiletropicaljunglesthriveinthe

    south.Suchdiversityhasresultedinculturaldiversityaswell.

    Yunnanishometomorethan20ofChinas56recognizedethnicminorities. Ithasbecomeapopulartouristdestination,

    with itscapital,Kunming,recognizedasoneofthemost

    beautifulanddevelopedcities in thesouthwest reg ion.

    Tosupplementtheircoursework,studentswillvisithistorical

    andculturalsitesaroundKunming.Uniquetotheprogram

    aretwoexcursions,each4-5daysinduration.Thefirstwill

    bringthestudentstoLijiang,anortherntownatthefootof

    SnowMountainandhometoTibetansandthe Naxihunter-nomads;thesecondtripwillbeto Xishuangbanna,where

    studentswillseeTheravadaBuddhisttemplesandwander

    throughtheWildElephantReserve.

    NEWREQUIREMENT FORGRADUATION

    XCE:Yunnanwillaccommodate84studentsforSY2011-2012.

    Thiswill bringthetotalnumberofstudentstravelingtoChinato279,withroomtospare. Forthefirsttime,Xavier

    finallyhasthecapacityforeverystudent inabatchtohave

    joinedanXCEatleastonce.

    The Grade 7 studentsofSY 2011-2012 ,andall students

    thereafter,arenowrequiredtoattendoneoftheXCEsasa

    prerequisiteforgraduation. Forthesebatchesofstudents,

    Xavierwill subsidize $200 foreach studentjoining the

    program,provided thatthestudenthasnotjoinedanXCE

    before. Furthermore,ashasalwaysbeen thepractice,

    studentsattendingXavieron scholarshipmay request

    financialassistanceforXCE.

    Longago,St.FrancisXavierdreamedofgoingtoChina.

    HegotasfarasaShangchuanIsland,justoffthecoastof

    Guangzhou,buthenevermadeittothemainland.Fellow

    Jesuitmiss ionariessuchas MateoRiccieventuallymade

    theirmarkinChinesesociety,onlytobeexpelledfromthe

    MiddleKingdomtwice,mostrecentlyinthe1950s. Aswe

    know,someoftheseJesuitscontinuedtheirmissiontoserve

    theChinese communitybyestablishingXavier Schoo l.

    Itisthereforeonlyfittingthatwecontinueinthetradition

    ofthesegreatpioneers. ThestoryofXavierSchoolcomes

    fullcirclewhenour Grade7studentsvisitSt.FrancisXaviers

    burialplaceonShangchuanIsland,whenour High4students

    praybefore MateoRiccisgraveinBeijing,andwhenany

    ofourstudentsinteractwithpeoplearoundtheworldin

    aspiritofopennessandhospitality.

    In this light,oureffortsat internationalizationarenot

    just innovationspreparingourstudents for the future;theyaredeeplyrootedtraditionsthatbringusbacktothe

    richnessofourpast.

    INITIALIMPACTOF SINGAPOREMATH

    GlobalBestPractice:SingaporeMath

    Singapore MathwasintroducedinXavierSchoolin2008

    toenhancethestudentsproblemsolvingskills,encourage

    amorepositivedispositiontowardsmath,andincrease

    studentcapacitytovisualize,analyze,andcommunicate

    mathematics.

    TheconceptualframeworkofSingapore Mathiscenteredonharness ingthestudentsproblemsolvingskillsby

    developingfiveinterrelatedcomponents:concepts,skills,

    processes,attitudes,andmetacognition.Themethod

    highlightsreasoning,communicationsandconnections

    where students are taught to communicatemath

    effectively,searchforpatternsinmath,andconnecttheir

    learningtorealworldsituations.

    Inthehighschoolunit,themathdepartmentconsidered

    theexpectationsofthelocaluniversitieswithregardto

    mathcompetenciesandskills.ToensurethattheXaverian

    isnotdisadvantagedincollege,the HSmathdepartment

    selectedtheNewSyllabus Math(NSM)asthemaintextbook

    becauseitcloselyapproximatestheregularmathprogram

    ofXavierSchool.Oncethecurriculumissuewasresolved,

    someofthebestpracticesoftheSingapore Math Model.

    TheconsultantoftheNSM textbooks,Dr.YeapBan Har,

    conductedseveralworkshopsformathteacherswhoalso

    attendedothertrainingprograms,includingatleasttwo

    summertrainingattheAteneodeManila.Tosolicitfull

    supportfromourXavierparents,themathteachersthen

    conducted introductoryworkshopsforparents.These

    provedevenmorebeneficialtothemathteachers,who

    becamemoreconfidentincommunicatingandteaching

    mathusingtheSingaporeapproach.

    Therehasbeennoscientificstudyyetregardingtheeffect

    ofSingapore MathonstudentlearninginXavier.However,

    acloserlookatthePSATresultsforthepastthreeyears

    revealssomepositivesigns.

    It must be noted that the Singapore Approach to Learning Math

    was introduced to all H1 classes during SY 2008 - 2009. These students

    took the PSAT during SY 2009 - 2010* when they were in H2, and again inSY 2010 - 2011 in H3. The second batch of students who were introduced

    to the Singapore approach took the H2 PSAT in SY 2010 - 2011.**

    The H2data indicates amarked improvement in the

    performanceofstudentswhostudiedSingapore Mathas

    comparedtothosewhodidnt (2008-2009).95%ofthe

    batchearnedscoreshigherthantheinternationalmeanin

    2009;similarly,93%ofthebatc

    internationalmean.ThisissupportedbytheH3 resultswhere

    Whilethedataisyettoolimitedtoindicateatrendand

    stronglinktoSingapore Math,theinitialfindingssuggest

    thePSATaswellaslocalbenchmarkingtoolsindicatethat

    theschoolenjoysaleadingpositioninthissubjectarea.

    ThroughtheSingapore Mathmethodandcurriculum,we

    hopetopreservethatstatusformanymoreyearstocome.

    The Grade 7 students have been taking the

    InternationalPrimarySchoolLeavingExamination

    (iPSLE)since2007asaninternationalbenchmarking

    exerciseinacademicstandards.TheiPSLEisalsoan

    accurate evaluation measure to assess how

    effectivelyweimplementtheSingaporeanmethods

    inteachingmathandscience.

    TheSingaporeExaminationsandAssessmentBoard

    (SEAB)conductedanauditofXavierSchoolasaTestingCenterlastAugust1-8,2011.SEABAuditors

    Mr.Jayachandranand Mr.JoshuaAngcheckedthe

    schoolscompliancewithSEABstandardsasregards

    facilities,personnelrequirements,andprocedures.

    The 2011CentreAuditReport forXavierSchool

    sentlastAugust25,2011statedthatwecomplied

    withandsatisfactorilymettherequirementssetby

    theSEAB.

    FacetoFaith:ADialogueBetweenCultures

    Last March28,2011,Fr.Johnny Go,SJattendedtheFace toFaithCoordinatorsmeeting inDubai in

    preparationforthe launchoftheprogram inthe

    Philippines.Beganin2008bytheTonyBlairFaith

    Foundation, the program seeks to promote

    unde rstanding and app reciation of religions

    throughdialoguebetweenfaiths.

    XavierSchoolwastappedtobetheleadschoolin

    thePhilippines. Inthisinterview,Fr. Goexplainswhy

    thisprogramisrelevanttoreligiouseducationand

    itsotherbenefitsforXavierSchoolstudentsfacing

    thechallengesofthe21stcentury.

    DescribetheFacetoFaithprograminmoredetail.

    FacetoFaithisaprogramdesignedfor12to17year

    old students to learnnotonly aboutdifferent

    religions,butalsoabout respectanddialogue.

    Itcomeswithaflexiblecurriculumthatanyschool

    canadoptandcanbe incorporatednotonlyinto

    ReligiousEducationclasses,butalsoinanyofthe

    HumanitiessubjectslikeEnglish,Filipino,andSocial

    Studies. Butthebestpartabouttheprogramisthatstudentslearnnotsomuchfromtheusualexperts,

    orfromteachersortextbooks,butfromtheirpeers.

    Through videoconferencesmoderatedby trained

    facilitators, students canencounter students from

    placeslikeIndia,Australia,theUK,andLebanonandtalk

    about their faith. Ive never come across any

    program like it,and Im reallyexcited thatwearefinallylaunchingithere.

    HowdidXavierSchoolgetinvolvedinthis?

    Wewerejust GooglingforsomeideasfortheChristian

    LifeEducationcurriculumweweredesigningforour

    InternationalBaccalaureatestudentsinthirdyearand

    fourthyearhighschool,andwefoundthesiteoftheTonyBlairFaithFoundation(TBFF).Wesentoutanemail

    andpromptlygotaverypositiveresponse. Beforewe

    knewit,TBFFsentIanJamisonfromtheUKandSimmi

    Kher from India last September 2010 tomeetwith

    educatorsandschooladministratorsfromalloverthe

    country. Thisledthefoundationtoorganizethefirst

    teachertrainingworkshopjustlastJunehereinXavier

    School.

    Asofthelastcount,thereare16countriesasidefrom

    thePhilippines(werethenewcomer): Australia,Canada,

    Egypt,India,Indonesia,Israel,Jordan,Lebanon,Pakistan,

    Whatdoyouforeseewillbethechallengesin implementingthisinXavierSchool?

    Ithinkthemostimportanthurdleswillbethebiasesand

    stereotypesthatourstudents,aswellasweourselves,might

    beharboringunconsciously. Toengageintruedialogue

    requiresanopennessthatmayleadtoaquestioningofour

    ownpreconceptions.Weshouldbewillingtodemolishour

    long-heldstereotypes. Itsoundseasiersaidthandone,

    ofcourse. Dialogue,afterall,ismuchtrickierinreallife!

    HowisthisprogramrelevantforFilipinostudents

    oftodayandeducationingeneral?

    TonyBlairbelievesthatmanyoftheproblemsintheworld

    arecausedbyreligiousmisunderstandingandintolerance.

    These are the very enemies of interfaith dialogue.

    Thereisanotherenemyofinterfaithdialogue: Religious

    indifferenceorrelativism.OneofthemostimportantinsightsIgainedintheDubaiconferenceisthattoleranceandopen-

    mindednessareactuallycompatiblewithacommitmentto

    aparticularfaithortradition. Icanengageinrespectful

    dialoguewithpeopleofotherfaiths,andintheprocessor

    evenasaresultoftheexperience,growinappreciationof

    andcommitmenttomyownfaith. Thatsoneofmyhopes

    forourstudentswhowillbeundergoingFacetoFaith.

    Howdoyouhopethisprogramcanbenefitthe countryingeneral?

    Asyouknow,wehaveourowntroubleshere. Theresso

    muchdiscriminationandprejudiceagainstour Muslim

    brothersandsistersonourpart--andIimagine,vice-versa.

    Ifouryoungpeopletoday,ourfuture leaders,willlearn

    how tobeopenand respectful towards thosewhose

    cultureorreligionisdifferentfromtheirs,iftheycanengage

    The HanyuShuipingKaoshi (HSK) is

    Chinas national standardized test

    designed to evaluate the Chinese

    proficiencyofnon-native speakers,

    includingforeignstudentsandoverseas

    Chinese.Thisexamisusedtobenchmark

    ones level vis--vis everyone else

    studyingChineseallovertheworld.Itis

    composed of three parts, namely:

    Listening, Reading Comprehension

    andGrammar.

    Data fromthe HSKexam isusedby

    XavierSchooltoprovideabasisforthe

    continuing enhancements to the

    reformedChinesecurriculum. Itisalso

    agoodopportunity tomonitor the

    students Chinese proficiency and

    comparetheirperformancetoother

    studentsstudyingChineseasasecond

    language.

    OnOctober20,2007,the High1and

    High4studentstookthefirst HSKBasicexam.Atthattime,theHSKwasdivided

    intothreecategories:Basic,Elementary

    toIntermediate,andAdvancedlevel.

    Theinitialresultshowedthatwhileonly

    31% ofH1studentspassedatleastthe

    basic level (Grade C), this ratehad

    more thandoubledat 73%passing

    ratefor H4students.

    In 2010, to adjust to the growing

    numberofstudentsstudyingChinese

    globally,theNewChineseProficiency

    Test (New HSK)was launched.There

    aresixlevelsintheNewHSK.Theschool

    is targeting levels 2, 3, and 4 as

    benchmarklevelsforXavierstudents,

    defined inthefollowingdescriptors:

    Level 2- can communicate simply

    anddirectlyondailytopicstheyare

    familiarwith,reachingtheadvanced

    stageofbeginnerlevel.

    HighSchool(Regular)

(XSETF) wasestablished on theprinciplethatnoboywhoisotherwisequalifiedshould be deprived of a Xav ier education forfinancial reasons alone .
