Dr. Chuck Mize WAITING…TO HEAR AND TO RECEIVE 15 22 As I write my last front page, we are in the midst of Advent…a time of preparation for what is to come. We are waiting for the coming of the Christ child to be part of our lives yet again. “Waiting” can be uncom- fortable. Sometimes we know what’s next, sometimes we don’t. One of my fun mem- ories in the 90’s was the time the late Dave Winton and his confirmation class collected winter coats as a service project. Their goal was 150. Each week we waited to see how many coats would show up at church. We received more than 200 coats. But the final count, are you ready…546 coats!! The next year, Dave and his class were at it again, only this time they decided to collect shoes and boots! The goal was 200. We waited again. This time we received over 740 pairs of shoes and boots. All in one gathering room! And I told Dave, “No more collection projects!” In March of 1997, the youth room was filled with teens who came every Sunday morn- ing for youth group. They squeezed into the room as one youth said to me, “Hey Pam, we need more furniture! Let’s order some now. We can’t wait or the kids will go other places!” There was a time later that year that staff and the congregation came together each Friday, from 11:30-noon in the sanctuary, for quiet reflection, prayer and meditation in this holy place. We prayed for one another, the church, the community, the world. We waited to hear the Spirit working among us and how we might truly care about each other. One question I hear often these days is, “But what will you do next?” My response is that I want to take some time for family and grandchildren, to relax (after I finish cleaning out my office!) and to pursue some hobbies as well as continue my wedding business in the Chicago area and other min- isterial things outside the local church. And then I say, “I want to wait and be open to hear and to receive the opportunities that come my way.” For only when we wait, and listen, can we be ready to respond to where God is calling us next. I leave you with three questions to consider and the responses from the children’s book entitled The Three Questions, based on a story by Leo Tolstoy. The story is about a king who wants to know the answer to his three questions, so that he might receive enlightenment. He thinks he will never fail if only he has the right answer. Here are the questions and responses: When is the best time to do things? The right time to begin something is always now. Who is the most important person? The one you’re with, in the present mo- ment. What is the right thing to do? Always do good for the person or group you are with. That is how I’ve tried to live out my ministry here, and it’s what I take with me. All of you good people and memories that have been part of my life. This is the Season of Waiting. I’d rather know what’s next. You would probably like to know what’s next for GCC. But we wait for God’s new future – and give thanks. Blessings to all, Pam Merry Merry Christmas Christmas

As I write my last front page, we are in the midst of Advent…a time of preparation for what is to come. We are waiting for the coming of the Christ child to be part of our lives yet again. “Waiting” can be uncom-fortable. Sometimes we know what’s next, sometimes we don’t. One of my fun mem-ories in the 90’s was the time the late Dave Winton and his confirmation class collected winter coats as a service project. And I told Dave, “No more collection projects!”In March of 1997, the youth room was filled with teens who came every Sunday morn-ing for youth group. They squeezed into the room as one youth said to me, “Hey Pam, we need more furniture! Let’s order some now. We can’t wait or the kids will go other places!”

There was a time later that year that staff and the congregation came together each Friday, from 11:30-noon in the sanctuary, for quiet reflection, prayer and meditation in this holy place. We prayed for one another, the church, the community, the world. We waited to hear the Spirit working among us and how we might truly care about each other.

One question I hear often these days is, “But what will you do next?” My response is that I want to take some time for family and grandchildren, to relax (after I finish

cleaning out my office!) and to pursue some hobbies as well as continue my wedding business in the Chicago area and other min-isterial things outside the local church.

Here are the questions and responses:

When is the best time to do things? The right time to begin something is always now.

Who is the most important person? The one you’re with, in the present mo-ment.

GENEROSITY 2020 PLEDGE CAMPAIGNWe are so grateful for the pledges we’ve received! If you have not pledged yet, please get your pledge in before the end of the year. You can pledge by sending an email to [email protected] or contact Lucinda Fuller directly at (847) 724-2210. As of December 9th, 239 of your fellow faith community members (including 25 anonymous) have pledged $749,305. Let’s grow our community of faith!

In order to help share all of the wonderful aspects that Glenview Community Church has to offer with each other and the broader community of Glenview, each month the Invitation and Awareness Team will have simple, fun challeng-es we encourage all members to participate in.

For the months of December and January the challenge is to:

Meet upwith another member from GCC

for coffee or lunch.

#COMMUNITYCHALLENGE

“LIKE” US ON FACEBOOK! Keep up with all the great things going on at GCC by liking our Facebook page. Search for Glenview Community Church - United Church of Christ. You don’t want to have FOMO, do you?? (Fear Of Missing Out)

FELLOWSHIP TIME VOLUNTEERS NEEDEDThe new Commons has been a great gathering place for Fellowship Time after worship every Sunday morning. Everyone seems to be very happy with the new food offerings, and the fresh cream for coffee! The Fellowship Team consists of Sally Thuresson, JoAnne Peters, Ann Grant, Dina Tosh and Jeanie Bond. Every week, you will see at least one of us in the Commons Kitchen. Other helpers are needed to serve drinks and food, and supply some of the food. Please consider signing up using the notebook at the Commons Kitchen counter.

SPIRITUAL COUNCIL MEETING REPORT NOVEMBER 19, 2019November’s focus was on welcome and giving—both to GCC and to the community.

TREASURER’S REPORT: Treasurer Chris Clark reported revenues $40,000 above budget and expenses about $20,000 above budget through October. Forward in Faith has closed out all expenses with Altounian Construction; when the final tally is completed, total construction expenses are expected to be approximately $3.8 million, as budgeted.

GENEROSITY CAMPAIGN: As of November 25, 213 of your fellow faith community members have pledged $749,305. The Generosity Team has sent out letters to congregation members and will follow up with phone calls and emails. Pledges are needed to keep GCC a vital and giving church—and to keep the lights on.

GIVING TO THE COMMUNITY: The Women’s Association reported that it had donated $20,000 to 10 service organizations. Over the course of the church year, the Women’s Association will continue to donate funds earned by the New to You shop to different agencies that support vulnerable populations. The Outreach Ministry shared reminders about the Feed My Starving Children event and the Toys for Tots Concert 12/14 and the Mission Tree in the Narthex. The Spiritual Council approved this year’s special holiday offerings: the Thanksgiving offering will go to Casa Norte and Northfield Township Food Pantry; the Christmas offering will go to Iglesia San Lucas and the Night Ministry.

INVITING THE COMMUNITY: The Worship and Music Ministry has been discussing ways to make Sunday mornings more friendly and will be implementing plans to make sure visitors and members alike feel welcome at each moment they spend in our church.

WOMEN’S RETREATWe hope you can join us on this year’s women’s retreat, where we will explore the role of the vibrant, strong women of the early church. These women were powerful, they were rebels, and they staked out their place at the center of emerging Christianity. We will hear their stories in active and engaging ways, and we will tell our own stories to honor the inspirational “church ladies” in our own lives. There will be plenty of good food, laughter, and time to be together in community as we work on a service project. The hotel has a gym, a walking path, and comfortable gathering spaces available for our use during free time. The retreat is January 24–26, at the Chicago Marriott Suites Deerfield, 2 Parkway North, Deerfield. Events kick off at 7 p.m. on the 24th and run until 11 a.m. on the 26th. The cost is $210 and includes meals. Checks should be payable to Glenview Community Church and sent or brought to the office, attention Chris Calandra. The cost for a double room at the Marriott is $89. Reserve your room by calling 1-800-228-9290. You can register for the retreat at this link https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSe5ulU-ClzGCmWHYm_TwCarZEftKJBCY_yuryx2hKy4FrTHdg/viewform?usp=sf_link or by picking up the registration form in the office and placing the completed form in Cathy Shapiro’s box in the office.

GCC SPEAKERS’ FORUM 1-8-20Join us for GCC Speakers’ Forum on Just Housing and Recidivism, presented by FIAT on January 8 at 6:30 p.m. A panel of experts will discuss Cook County’s new Just Housing Ordinance that requires landlords to evaluate individual cir-cumstances of a rental applicant’s criminal background when considering applications of people with prior involvement in the criminal justice system. Understand the pro’s and con’s and express your opinion on how Glenview should respond. Event follows the 5:30 p.m. Community Dinner. If you plan to attend the dinner but do not usually, please let Nancy Mullarkey know by emailing her [email protected].

IN THE SPIRIT OF THE SEASON…DUNKIN’ DONUTS GIFT CARDS FOR THE NIGHT MINISTRYHomelessness and hunger, two of the saddest words spoken and made especially urgent as another Chicago winter approaches. Since 1976, The Night Ministry has strived to build relationships with vulnerable youth and adults on the nighttime streets. Our church has helped support them for many years.

The Night Ministry has expressed immense appreciation for our $5.00 Dunkin’ Donuts gift cards donated in the past. These afford an invitation to enter a warm, welcoming space to get out of the elements and have something to eat and drink. If you would like to join Chapter 20 and other participating chapters in buying some of these cards, we will mail them to The Night Ministry during Christmas week. A box labeled “The Night Ministry” will be placed in the church office after the Thanksgiving holiday. Questions: call Mary Beth Amoruso, 847-408-7272, 847-729-6524, [email protected].

THE MISSION TREEThe Mission Tree is an opportunity to donate items that will be distributed through The Night Ministry and Connections for the Homeless, both long time GCC partner agencies. Suggested donations include NEW adult-sized cold weather items- gloves, hats, headbands, socks, long underwear, regular underwear, white t-shirts. Size large and dark colors are preferred. As well, gently used winter adult sized coats. Just bring your donations to church and leave them by the tree or by the church office. January 5 will the last day for donations. We can be a “God moment” to someone who is facing a harsh Chicago winter with inadequate clothing.

Please consider giving to the following organizations which help the communities struggling with homelessness. An envelope is provided in this newsletter.

THE NIGHT MINISTRY is a Chicago-based organization that works to provide housing, health care and human connection to members of the community struggling with poverty or homelessness.

SAN LUCAS UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST is committed in the struggle for justice, peace, and the liberation of all people. It identifies with the needs of an oppressed people that are in search of freedom and stands in solidarity with the struggle of the poor. Hot meals are provided every Tuesday, The Food Pantry provides community residents with groceries twice a month and the Produce Mobile Program provides fresh fruits and vegetables once every month. The Thrift Store provides residents with clothing/ shoes, and household needs.

THE EMPTY MANGER: A SPECIAL GOD MOMENTI was enjoying a special Spiritual Life Team meeting with my small, but very mighty, Team 11. Mary Beth Amoruso had brought a man-ger to share with us. I watched as she lovingly placed the manger on our dining room table where we were meeting and noticed the manger was empty. I thought how curious that was. An empty manger! Why was that important? Why was my mind working overtime in thinking about this very small, simple empty manger? And so my heart began to open to this question and responded as hearts always do.

Well, if the manger is empty, that means the manger is available for everyone: everyone is that beloved God baby, born in a manger in Bethlehem. We are each welcomed to that manger by the force of love in the world we call God. And my heart said, “YES”.

And then Mary Beth said “Oh…the manger is upside down”. She picked it up, turned it over and there was the Baby Jesus, nestled inside. But my heart and spirit had already heard God’s message. In this Christmas season, may we experience the love that fills God’s manger and sends us out into the world to invite everyone to come to the empty manger and be filled with God’s Love. Praise God. Amen.
