LocationThe Y Fitness Summit will be hosted by the Fitness Education Centre. All workshops will be held at the Taggart Family YMCA-YWCA located at 180 Argyle Avenue.
Free parking is available on the street. Paid parking is available in the parking garage.
Earn Continuing Education CreditsThe Y Fitness Summit is an opportunity to network and learn from some of the best fitness professionals in the business. This is also an opportunity to enhance your educational skills and earn credits toward your YMCA-YWCA and CALA and CanFit Pro certifications.
By attending this conference, you will earn 4 YMCA-YWCA Internal CECs, 3 CALA CECs, 4 CanFit Pro CECs.
E-Certificates will be available at the end of the day only. Participants will not be able to receive their E-certificates until they submit the Summit evaluation form at the end of the event.

“We want to make movement part of people’s lives again, and to make it as accessible as possible in any given instance” Dr. Chris and Mandy will talk about the importance of movement and mobility training as key parts of any fitness or sport performance program, particularly as they pertain to injury prevention and overall enhanced day-to-day function. Their mantra is “movement is medicine” which they will get their participants to experience by doing active session demonstrating examples of what it means given access little to no equipment (Lecture/Activity).

Layering Drill: A Practice in Form and Techniques
Presenter: Lyndsay Fillier• Indoor Cycling Instructor, Y certified
This workshop will introduce participants to a Layering Drill – what it is and how it can be applied to a ride. Short intro regarding different movements and exercise options will be followed by a 60 min class and a follow-up discussion. The drills are interval style to give the class a challenging aerobic based ride, but also allow the instructor to introduce the class on more advanced moves, and to educate them on how to
perform them safely and effectively (Activity).

S.I.T.S. – We all know the Acronym, but addressing the rotator cuff in the gym and life is somewhat more complicated. This workshop will present a practical approach to rotator cuff health, uinjury prevention and training through biomechanics, proper exercise selection and performance. Several specific exercises to optimize the function of the rotator cuff and associated musculature will be featured, as well as their integration and techniques for instruction. (Lecture/Activity).

This exciting workshop will bring the latest on how to improve lower body ranges of motion and muscular flexibility. Andrea will present mobility and strengthening techniques for joints, surrounding tissue and muscles that will improve your everyday life and/or athletic performance, reduce pain and chance for injury. Prepare for takeoff and explore the outer limits. Dance it, or hit it! When you are in full flight nothing is better than the cardio choreography experience that is achievable to all. Learn clean transitions from one lead leg to the other without missing a beat. The topless blocks of choreography can be interlinked, put into different sequences or repeated as needed so everyone walks away a champion. The elements are all there. Now it’s your turn to take it and fly to new heights! (Activity).
Post Stroke Strength and Stretches Exercises

Review limitations of basic rehabilitative programs that are available for stroke survivors. Hear testimonials from clients who have had different rehabilitative experiences. Discuss the variety of challenges that stroke survivors can be left to deal with. Identify why some trainers/instructors avoid this population until they discover etiquette, communication and safety tips to become more comfortable as a fitness professional with this group. Finally, review safe and effective exercises that facilitate balance, strength and maintain range of motion. (Lecture).

This fun and practical workshop will focus on two of the most fundamental resistance exercises, the squat and the bench press, with emphasis on what a good Trainer and Coach needs to know! Biomechanics, variations of the exercises, and technique will be emphasized, as well as cueing for instructional purposes. The squat and bench press will be contextualized and integrated within a greater training domain. (Activity/Lecture).
