LocationThe Y Fitness Summit will be hosted by the Fitness Education Centre. All workshops will be held at the Taggart Family YMCA-YWCA located at 180 Argyle Avenue.

Free parking is available on the street. Paid parking is available in the parking garage.

Earn Continuing Education CreditsThe Y Fitness Summit is an opportunity to network and learn from some of the best fitness professionals in the business. This is also an opportunity to enhance your educational skills and earn credits toward your YMCA-YWCA and CALA and CanFit Pro certifications.

By attending this conference, you will earn 4 YMCA-YWCA Internal CECs, 3 CALA CECs, 2 CanFit Pro CECs.

E-Certificates will be available at the end of the day only. Participants will not be able to receive their E-certificates until they submit the Summit evaluation form at the end of the event.

Explore Your Inner Core

Looking for new, effective and challenging core exercises? Tired of the same crunches and planks? Switch things up and use your own body and the stability ball to train the core…crunch free! Exercises for the deep core will be covered and options provided for various fitness levels. We’ll touch on the shoulder and trunk stabilizers and incorporate a short stretch on the ball. (Activity).

Cardiovascular Disease and Exercise by Heart Wise Exercise

• Anita Findlay – Dynamic Group Fitness instructor specializing in Older Adult fitness, Yoga and Pilates

This interactive session will explore various cardiovascular disease case studies, allowing participants to feel comfortable with having clients with various kinds of conditions in their exercise settings. Case studies will be presented specifically related to cardiac, stroke and early dementia, and learners will have opportunity to provide input and ask questions. This session will include live exercise sessions that demonstrate different ways to put into play the various exercise recommendations. This session will count as a Heart Wise Exercise refresher session. (Lecture/Activity).

Music that Moves Us – Cues that Motivate Us! - GC

As indoor cycling coaches, it is our job to motivate and get our participants moving! We have all gone to a class when a brutal song comes on, or the instructor has a monotone voice, repeats the same cues, or simply talks too much. In this session, Head Coach of Team Triumph Triathlon Club – Julia Aimers, will be presenting tips and tricks for selecting the best music and cues to get your athletes moving and motivated! Please bring along one or two of your best music HITS and CUES to share with the Group. (Activity).

Begin by reviewing the anatomy of the spine: bone, muscle and connective tissue. Explore the different type of scoliosis and how the spine and surrounding tissues can be affected. Discuss options to assess muscular strength and functionality including networking with health care professionals. Explore basic strengthening and stretching exercises to combat the symptoms and help relieve the pain that scoliosis may cause (Lecture/Activity).

In this workshop participants will learn the latest applications and fresh exercise sequences using Bender Balls and Gliding Discs. Discover how to incorporate these dynamic portable tools to create a challenging and results driven program providing a high energy style workout. It is time to bring your inner athlete out! Yoga for Runners

This class will explore common runner’s injuries and how yoga can be used to help sooth aching joints and chronic overuse issues. We will utilize tools such as yoga bocks and straps to demonstrate how to maximize stretching potential while being mindful of flexibility limitations which are often present in runners (Activity).

Improving posture can have many benefits including decreased strain and pain on the joints and surrounding musculature, enhanced muscular coordination and activation, improved performance and more. Help your clients and participants improve their overall health and function with exercises you can take into your classes or to your clients right away. Strengthen the scapular stabilizers, thoracic extensors, deep core and hips. Improve mobility in the thoracic spine, chest and shoulders. Most importantly, work on techniques to improve posture. Demystifying Yoga for Clients

Yoga is great holistic tool to complement clients’ lifestyle – whether they are office workers, athletes, or both. However, they are not benefiting unless they actually try it. This workshop will cover some of the quickest ways to demystify the practice of yoga and make it more appealing to clients. Modules will range from typical sequencing for people who spend hours behind the desk, to most functional poses for athletes across a range of sports. (Activity).

Nutrition for Weight Loss

This lecture will be focused on the common mistakes our clients make when starting their health and fitness journeys. How we as health and fitness professionals can safely assist and guide them through some of their road blocks and assist them in reaching their goals. Some topics which will be discussed – the Latest in Nutrition Basics, Supplementation – is it needed, Post workout Recovery foods, what diet is best for weight loss.(Lecture).
