I’m not going to lie, yes – the heat is driving me crazy! Going about my daily activities – work, running errands, finding a parking spot in the hot midday sun has proven to be tough when I’m sweating buckets! At home, I take a shower before I go to bed every night, but even before my hair can dry, I can already feel the new beads of perspiration forming on my forehead and back. It’s disgusting I tell you!

Then again, our Western counterparts call this the summer holidays and many enjoy the warm and sunny outdoors, indulging in a myriad of activities. And because the heat has been mad, we trust that you will enjoy the 2-week long school holidays coming up in June. Do check out Your Guide To A Malaysian School Holiday (pg 25)! And just because the weather isn’t being nice, all the more reason to beat it and Look Fabulous This Summer (pg32).

On a more serious note, in this issue of Edu Zone, we talk about Your Route To Medicine in Russia (pg 13), Hospitality & Tourism Management (pg 14) and The Smarts Students Guide To Getting a Dream Job (pg 16).

The month of May sees Malaysia’s largest youth festival happening in town. Youth ’10, held for the third time running will be held in PWTC this year, from 28-30 May. With Music, Sports, Dance, Discovery and Shopping, mark your calendars and come be a part of this exciting weekend!

Y! Magazine, being one of the official media for Youth ’10, had our resident writer Sharmini H. catching up with the two lads behind YouthAsia (the organizer of Youth ’10), in Lounging With The Lads (pg 6).

This issue’s College Oomph (pg 18) features the underdog sports of dodgeball as the Malaysian Association of Dodgeball (MAD) storms colleges and communities with much gusto.

Check out our new blog to win some movies passes and we’re giving away some CDs to Justin Bieber and Zee Avi fans. Write to us to win!

In this issue, I’d also like to take this opportunity to pay tribute to my parents as we celebrate Mother’s Day in May, and Father’s Day in June. To mom and dad – if you’re reading this – there are no words which can ever express how much you mean to me. And because I know I will never be able to repay all that you’ve done for us kids, I just want to tell you that I love you both!

And because we all love our parents to bits, check out some interesting facts in our special Mother’s Day & Father’s Day Feature (pg 26).

Cheers,

Doreen

In today’s time, there is no doubt of the increase of popularity in golfing. Thus, in line with this, there is a growing need in the industry for golf management. However, where does one further their education in something as niche as sports? With the lack of choice, students who wanted to venture into this industry had to continue their higher education abroad.

KDU College’s School of Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Arts (SHTCA) noted this point, and in collaboration with Saujana Golf & Country Club as well as working with the assistance of La Trobe University, Australia, developed the Diploma in Golf Resort Management.

The 2 year programme, which is the first and only of its kind in Malaysia, will ensure that students attain academic and industry knowledge as it bridges theory and practice concurrently. Working in tandem with Saujana Golf & Country Club, the school will introduce a programme with

modules taught by both SHTCA and Saujana, at the college as well as the golf resort. As this is the only golf resort management programme in Malaysia, it is a good start for those who want to work in the golf resort industry and manage golf courses. Not only that, students will also get to experience their industrial training at Saujana Golf & Country Club, rated 100 Best Golf Resorts in the World.

The 11th Charity Concert was organized by the Interact Coordinating Committee of Petaling Jaya (ICCPJ), who are strongly supported by the Rotary Club of PJ. This organization involves some 500 Interactors from the six participating Interact Clubs, namely SMK Assunta, SMK La Salle, SMK Sultan Abdul Samad, SMK (P) Sri Aman, SMK (L) Bukit Bintang and SMK Catholic High.

Along the fundraising aim of the concert, almost RM35000 was raised! Most of the proceeds were channeled to the Golden Child Project that supports kids with cancer; as well as the National Autistic Society of Malaysia. The rest was divided among the six clubs for their community service projects. Indeed, the Interact’s Spirit of “Service Above Self” was upheld! Themed “Frequency; The Future is Listening,”

the event worked on the concept that what youths do today affects the future and positive energy, like in Interact, is indeed capable of pushing the limits of youth action. The concert was a talent show that has unearthed mind-blowing performances, altogether amplifying the hype of the concert. The raw talents were from the six schools and were categorized into Modern Dance, Cultural Dance and Singing. Some pieces were outstandingly creative and well-executed; quickly becoming the crowd’s favourites judging from their deafening cheers. Kudos to the winners who walked away with cash prizes: Pop Royalty for modern dance, Herman & Khairul for singing and Samad’s Tarian Zapin for Cultural Dance!

Also present were local personalities Rina Omar, Liang, Annatasha, Kraft, Sam CF and Disagree.

In a bare-it-all session, Sharmini H. got the lads from YouthAsia, Joel Neoh (JN) and Ng KhaiLee (KL) to share with us tales from their

schooling years, the success of their company, and their desired superhero power.

Lounging With The LadsTell us about your background/school experience and how it has brought you here. JN: Up till Form 2, my life has been pretty boring. I spent most of my time studying, and trying to get awards - book awards, best student of the year, best student in particular subjects. Coming from a family background of two educators (my mother was a teacher, and my father a lecturer) - studies was pretty much the strongest emphasis in my life. Form 3 onwards I wanted to do things I liked, and found my passion in sports. I played volleyball, squash, tennis, football. I had a great few years doing that.KL: I was born naked, toothless, bald and severely confused. Eventually I grew a diverse set of interests, and a hunger for exploring them. In primary school it was catching and studying insects, Lego, and English literature. In secondary school it was fitness, web & graphic design, British music, playing the guitar and drums. In college it was art, outdoor adventure, philosophy, business, economics, & Web2.0. This led me to friends from all walks of life, and a hunger to explore more. Armed with a business degree, an addiction to the internet, and nothing to lose, what else could I do next? Do what I do now, of course!

What is your top memory from secondary school? JN: I was elected as the Sports Captain of the Green House at form 5. It was quite exciting; I recall running the 800m race, winning the medal and contributed a significant amount of points to the house.KL: I once dropped a sausage on the ground. When I picked it up, my friend grabbed it from me super fast, ninja style, putting it into his mouth, not knowing the sausage had been rolling with sandy stuff. There he was, laughing at me with his lumpy, gross cheeks.

What accomplishment are you the most proud of in your life so far? JN: Being able to lead this entrepreneurship journey and to do what I’m doing now.KL: I was on a beach wrestling with a hairy man five times my size. Big guy, I tell you. Like a bear. As he was throwing me down into my death, I tripped him and I fell on him instead! There is even a YouTube

video of it if you Google for “Russian bear wrestling”. It was at that point I realized I could achieve anything in life.

What has been your greatest failure, and what did you learn from it? JN: I spent a few years of my life thinking that life is a race, where you rush through phases in life to reach the end. I have since learned that life is actually a journey where you need to pace yourself and take one step at a time. There are important things in life which you need to focus on - like friendship, and building other people to see them grow.KL: For me, I’m fortunate to have led a normal, happy life. I attract a mix of experiences, people, opportunities, challenges, and the sort. And each bit good or bad has been a lesson for me one way or the other.

Page 6: Y! Magazine May-June 2010

Cover Story

If you had a choice of 3 items to take with you to a deserted island, what would it be?JN: I would bring the 3 most important people in my life instead :)KL: My positive attitude gun, my resourcefulness hat, and my unshakable confidence underwear.

What do you like to do for fun? JN: Meeting and spending time with fun and like-minded people.KL: I admit, work, mostly. When you are completely in love with what you’re doing, nothing else can be more fun. And then I make time for reading, learning, laughing, dancing, friends, and hanging out with my parents.

If you could choose one superhero power, what would it be?JN: Time traveling KL: Dragon punch. I have seen many colorful people in arcade machines do it, their deltoids are well defined. I may develop defined deltoids if I can do the dragon punch.

Either living or dead, who has proven to be a good leader in your eyes? Why?JN: The late Mr. Chan, a mentor and friend who’ve passed away a year ago. He truly believed in young people in our country. He believed in us.KL: Scott Adams, the cartoonist behind Dilbert. He will be one of the few thought leaders in the new renaissance if there’s going to be one. Google him, you’ll soon be blinded by his brilliance and alternative thought. Not sure if he has led anything but I am one of his followers for sure. And then I believe in the power of President Obama’s rhetoric.

How did you start YouthAsia? What made you choose this path?JN: I started off with my first business venture in advertising and promotions, which dealt mainly with young promoters. Realizing a huge potential in the youths, we kickstarted a few youth programmes, such as Gegar U! Colours of Our Nation and YOUTH’08. Together with Khailee, we started YouthSays.com, the online youth rewards platform.KL: Google’s CEO, Eric Schmidt has a quote. “The Internet is the first thing that humanity has built that humanity doesn’t understand, the largest experiment in anarchy that we have ever had.” Guess what. Asia has a majority youth population. And we are embracing the internet thing like crazy. Something tells me, some things are going to change. This excites me to no end, and Youth Asia is an amazing vehicle to be involved with youths, the internet, and to explore life with. This is why this is my path.

How has YouthAsia grown so far?JN: Youth Asia has organized Malaysia’s Largest Youth Festival twice. We have also co-organized Youth Engagement Summit 2009 which brought 500 SEA youths into the country for the Summit. We’ve executed winning youth campaigns for our clients online and on-ground. To-date, our community has a span of over 250,000 youths in Southeast AsiaKL: We’re at the early stages. From 4 people and one idea, we now have a profitable youth research business, social advertising business, a well-known annual youth festival (the largest in Malaysia), and of course, a buzzing community of young people who get paid in cash and prizes for contributing at www.youthsays.com . We also have 16 full time staff from across ASEAN. But as I mentioned, we’re at the early stages. There is tremendous room for growth.

Where do you see YouthAsia in the future? How will it impact today’s Youth?JN: Youth Asia will continue to realize businesses and ideas which believe in the potential of today’s youths. :)KL: We see the energy and ideas of millions of youths channeled into a force of change and economic growth for the country. It’s already happening. In the last month, via www.YouthSays.com alone, youths have raised massive awareness for over 28 NGO campaigns and helped multiple businesses shape their products and communications to serve youths better. There’s more to come.

If it were up to you, what change would you make in our local secondary schools?JN: Add more emphasis in out-of-classroom skills through fun activities for youths. Education does not stop at books :)KL: There must be one compulsory subject, called DISCOVERY, where every student must go and choose a key area of interest, and over a course of a year, teach the class about it. Imagine one classroom, say 40 students, that’s 40 diverse subjects / interests. Multiply that across tens of thousands of schools across country. Now you’re looking at hint of an organic, evolving, involving kind of education, and what may be the seeds of innovation for our country.

What are the daily challenges you face as a young entrepreneur?JN: Multitasking & juggling between tasks. Finding time for thousands of things to do in a dayKL: Complementing all my energy with focus, discipline, patience. Things I heard you will know about once you’ve grown up. But I’ve been getting better at it! Promise!

What advice would you give budding young entrepreneurs?JN: Surround yourself with a team of good people. Don’t worry about wasting time. Worry about wasting energy. When you have energy, time flies. When you don’t, time crawls.KL: Have fun, keep learning, and keep it real.

Job Jump

Do you wonder whether there is a better work life for you? As sociologist Max Weber put it, our modern dilemma is “Do we work to live or live to work?” The scenario of work life has changed much in the past years with the unpredictable economic times. With much restructuring in organisations -- big or small -- employees at all levels do not know where they belong anymore. Or, if they belong at all!

People are becoming disillusioned with not being able to relate to their work and the intensity is growing more than ever. Historically, we assume that organisations will take care of us. Unfortunately, some may have come to face the

emerging work realities that cost us our jobs and turn our lives upside-down. People are unsure of their organisation’s plans. They fear layoffs and the global competition, wary of the unsettled economy and unclear of their future. People feel that the work they used to love has become drudgery. In the case of layoffs, they are doing twice as much as they were before but enjoying half as much. They are constantly frustrated, burnt out and fed up. But they are reluctant to talk to their management about these issues because these days, they feel lucky just to have a job. But they also talk about finding another job that they can do with their talents. In the meantime, they continue to feel trapped in the job they have and have no idea where to look

elsewhere. That mythical Perfect Job is out there somewhere - but do we know what is it or how do we get it?

Most of the time, people settle for work that makes them mildly miserable day after day, month after month, and year after year. When they feel frustrated and burnt out, they bury their fear and their minds rationalise: “Hey, this is living! What can you expect these days?” Put it another way, drudgery is okay as long as it pays. Is it true?

What then is your perception of a perfect job?Is it a big salary with a cosy office all for yourself with unlimited travels to exotic places and lots

of time off? And of course, no one to boss you around? Well, the truth is, such kind of perfect job does not exist. A job may be perfect to one but not to another. A perfect job is not about enjoyment. It is one that mirrors perfectly the person who holds it. You can find, invent or create that perfect job for yourself by working a process that links who you are with what you do. The process will provide guidelines to develop a clarity of your talents, passions and value - looking inside you and discovering what you do best, what you are interested in and the type of working environment that supports what you care about your work. Combine all these three criteria to develop a clear vision of the kind of work that connects who you are to what you do.

In this perfect job, you are applying your talents to an interest you are passionate about, in an environment that fits who you are and what you value. Take a look at the people who are passionate about their work, for example, our Prime Minister. He is energised by his work, truly passionate about it and always with his people at large. He is perfect for the job! As you can relate, a perfect job is not a standard of living. It is a state of mind and a state of being. It is a lifestyle rich with a purpose.

Finding your purpose in lifeFind out what you want and why you want it. By discovering the answers to these questions, you are a step closer to knowing more about your purpose in life. The purpose is not a goal that you can reach, but a direction that sets the course of your life. Without a sense of purpose, it is like a ship without a rudder in the middle of the deep sea - lost and out of control. So, how do you discover your purpose? Sometimes, it takes a crisis to rethink about your direction in life and it may take some time to find it. Some simple questions which can help you to discover your purpose are:

• What are my talents? • Skills that you enjoy expressing • Abilities that come naturally and that which you have been doing effortlessly

• What are you passionate about? • Activities which reflect deep and consistent interests • Issues which you would love to be more involved in

• In what environment do you feel comfortable/natural to you? • Ideal work environment that would be conducive for you to express your true talents and passions Put all these together and envision the future and plan your first step now. Making a living is one thing, but making a lifestyle rich in purpose is another. Once you discover your purpose, it is easier for you to choose your real priorities and know what you are doing with your life.

I leave you with this quote from Edward Carpenter: “What is the good in life if its chief element, and that which must always be its chief element, is odious? No, the only true economy is to arrange so that your daily labour shall be itself a joy.”

Is there a Perfect Job?

Your Route to Medicine in Russia

Interested to study medicine? Looking for something more affordable yet of high standards?

Russia is home to some of the world’s finest universities and institutions that have earned the acclaim of many international bodies including UNESCO and the World Health Organisation.

There, students studying for a medical degree undergo a number of internal tests and examinations which are strictly formulated by the institutions to meet the exacting demands of the field of study.

Students will also have to undertake two state examinations, each academic year. in January and June, which help maintain standards to ensure top ranking graduates.

This is where RUSSIAN Resources Sdn Bhd (RRSB) plays a role by assisting private and government–funded students to study in Russia since its inception in 1996.

They provide professional student counseling and placement services, including application, obtaining a Non-Objection Certificate, visa processing, travel and hostel accommodation.

The degree programs are conducted in English

and RRSB also provides a minimum of 90 hours of language training, prior to the student’s departure to make them better equipped. As the pioneer in providing medical education in Russia, RRSB represents three Russian medical universities which are fully recognized by the Malaysian Medical Council (MMC) and Jabatan Perkhidmatan Awam (JPA), namely:

1) Moscow Medical Academy (MMA), founded in 1758.2) Nizhny Novgorod State Medical Academy (NNSMA), founded in 19203) Volgograd State Medical University (VSMU), founded in 1935. All are ranked amongst the top 10 medical universities in Russia.

Intakes of students are in strict compliance to the qualifications set by the Malaysian Ministry of Higher Education. The numbers of seats are restrictive and based on full qualification compliance. This is to ensure that the teacher-student ratio is maintained at its optimum and students have full access to all facilities and tutorials. With the present high exchange rate for the Euro, British and Australian currencies, studying medicine

in Russia is probably the most attractive option for students aspiring to become doctors.

For example, at both Volgograd and Nizhny Novgorod, the total tuition for a six-year program is only RM120,000 inclusive of hostel. A student’s monthly living expense averages about RM1,000 per month.

The intake for September/October 2010 is open for Pre-medical course using SPM/GCE ‘O’ level and 1st year course using STPM, A-Levels, SAM, Matriculation, UEC and equivalent certifications.

Applications for all medical universities are currently in progress. Please contact: Penang: 04-2260127 (Mr. Ng) Kuala Lumpur: 03-2171-1226 (Mr. Guru) or e-mail to [email protected]/melvin@ russian-resources.com or visit at www.russian-resources.com.

The hotel industry which has been an important part of travelers’ lives, has since evolved with the era. Today, the hotel industry is one of the ten hottest industries in the world thus providing great career prospects. Because of the huge demand of human capital worldwide, the hospitality and tourism management programme is one of the most popular choices.

If you enjoy meeting people, have an open mind and willing to learn as you work, your career prospect would be even brighter than students from professional courses. Best of all, it would be a financially rewarding career after an accumulation of a few years of experience.

KBU’s Diploma in Hospitality & Tourism Management stresses on multi-skill training, and advocates small group lecturing and practical learning besides the foundation theory about hotel management. Through this diploma programme, students are exposed to five key elements: hospitality management, food and catering services, travel and leisure management, business management and marketing.

On top of that, there is a practical restaurant, a

front office mock room, a housekeeping mock room and a training kitchen in the campus for students to gain hands-on experience; plus a 12-month work placement in a hotel, restaurant, travel agency or corporate company for students to have a feel of real work experience.

Muhammad Syukri Hussin, a lecturer of Hospitality & Tourism Management explains that the students get to learn the traffic flow in a restaurant, including table arrangement, menu recommendation and ushering in a practical restaurant setting.

Graduating student, Liang Chun Yik agreed that work placement in a hotel exposed him to the hotel’s operations. What he learned on campus is applicable in the training of various areas including room reservation, accounting, table services at the Chinese, Western and Japanese restaurants.

During work placement, Tee Chong Choon had worked as a doorman and receptionist besides servicing at a restaurant. He had a good chance to learn how to communicate effectively with the customers. Other experiences had Long Poh Poh

and Tan Hwee Neng working as receptionists in the headquarters of the hotel and handled room records.

All four students feel that work placement is a good way to explore the fields that they are interested in so that they make better decisions regarding their career paths after graduation. Culinary Arts lecturer, Chef Noor Hisham advises that graduates who can apply the foundation of food preparation and cooking experiences in real life, and have the right attitude to learn, could be a great cook one day, besides working in hotels or restaurants.

After graduation, students can choose to pursue further in BA (Hons) Business management and BA (Hons) Marketing, the UK degree programmes in partnership with Anglia Ruskin University.

A major obstacle in a student’s life is most definitely securing a job following graduation.

One solution is to circumvent the problem altogether and take a holistic view of the learning process and the job hunt. At Multimedia University (MMU), this approach has brought tremendous benefit to MMU students and graduates.

This is best exemplified by MMU’s Career Fair, the latest instalment of which was held from 2nd till 4th February 2010. Held at MMU’s Cyberjaya campus, the Fair provided an opportunity for MMU students to make their presence known to recruiters. Compared to other career fairs which target graduates instead, the MMU Career Fair gives MMU students a head start very few Malaysian students would ever experience.

The Career Fair drew more than forty participating companies, many of them global heavyweights such as DHL, Shell, Accenture, IBM, Ernst & Young, CIMB, Dell, Measat, PricewaterhouseCoopers, and HSBC.

“We are trying to recruit graduates and interns, from all types of academic backgrounds because MMU has some fantastic graduates,” says Puteri Azureen Zulaikha of Accenture. Probably the largest consulting firm in the world, Accenture

participated in MMU’s Career Fair to connect with top quality graduates.

“People are our biggest assets,” says Azureen. “Let’s say we have a student from an engineering background. We are not an engineering firm, but if they’re looking for something more challenging, trying to explore beyond their comfort zone, they can apply for the graduate consultant programme.”Accenture has 177,000 employees worldwide. “We’re very selective. In Malaysia, we participate in career fairs of only three universities. MMU is one of them.”

Another repeat participant is Shell. Debbie Chan, Shell’s Campus Marketing Advisor, says, “We have been doing this for many years. In the past, we have hired many MMU students, and since we are located right here in Cyberjaya, it makes sense for us to hire top graduates from MMU.”Debbie says, “Graduates are very important to the company. They will be the leaders of Shell. So our graduates’ recruitment is a very important pipeline into the company.”On the success of the firm’s recruitment drives at MMU, she comments, “Over a number of years, we have recruited many graduates from MMU. In fact, many of our staff in the Cyberjaya office are from MMU. We keep coming back not only because our office is in Cyberjaya, but MMU has

many courses that are relevant to us.”

MMU is also considered an important talent pool by business giant IBM. “We have identified a number of growth markets,” says Czaneil Johnson, Sourcing Lead for IBM Malaysia. Czaneil also commented on the success of MMU graduates in IBM. “We did a historical research, and what we found was that the majority of members of our accountants and financial teams are from MMU. MMU has a large presence in IBM.”

“We have a list of top universities, Tier 1 and Tier 2,” Czaneil adds. “MMU is in Tier 1.”

Considering such feedback gained during MMU’s 2010 Career Fair, it is evident that, as a student of MMU, combining studies and career in a holistic view is a very realistic and profitable proposition. Choosing MMU truly translates into unique advantages.

Candidates are invited to apply to MMU for the June 2010 intake in the fields of Engineering, Information Technology, Business, Management, Law, Bio-Medical Sciences and Creative Multimedia.

In an effort to take Malaysian dodgeball to greater heights and promote the exciting game to the masses, the Malaysia Association of Dodgeball (MAD) officially teamed up with Taylor’s University College Hyenas Dodgeball Club and Figos Sports Sdn. Bhd.

The announcement of the partnership between MAD and Taylor’s Hyenas – the first dodgeball club from a private institution of higher learning to be officially affiliated with MAD – and the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) Signing Ceremony between MAD and Figos Sports took place at a press conference held at the Taylor’s Lakeside Campus.

The affiliation signifies the involvement of Hyenas with MAD to reach out to communities not only to promote the holistic sport of dodgeball, but also to instill values of integrity, unity and teamwork. The MoU establishes Figos Sports as MAD’s official sports brand, as well as

partner in further growing the sport of dodgeball in Malaysia by organising tournaments.

“Dodgeball used to be a small, underdog sports several years ago, but it is now gaining more attention and being played by both the young and old. Today marks another significant milestone for MAD as we strive towards making dodgeball a high performance sport in the competitive world of sports together with Taylor’s Hyenas and Figos Sports,” said MAD President Datuk Samson Maman.

According to Ms. Angela Pok, Taylor’s University College Director of Student Experience, the recognition from MAD is a wonderful reward for the Hyenas Dodgeball Club and its members.

“From winning international tournaments and growing its membership base from 12 to over 200, the Club has come a long way since its establishment in 2008,” said Pok.

In the words of Julius Caesar, “We came, we saw, we conquered”, and that is exactly what dodgeballers are doing. The sport took campuses by storm when it first started out less than two years ago, but today, MAD (Malaysia Association of Dodgeball) is also spearheading the local community sports scene with the Community Dodgeball Championship JPNIN-CIMB 2010.

As a dodgeballer and a member of MAD, being part of MAD’s ground crew for this Community Dodgeball Championship was life changing. Living up to MAD’s philosophy of ‘Connecting Individuals to Communities”, as students, we realized that there is so much to be gained by being connected positively to people from all walks of life and how selflessness is often missing in today’s race for success.

With a common aim to foster unity and harmony within communities, the Jabatan Perpaduan Negara & Integrasi Negara joined forces with MAD to jointly organize this Community Championship together with CIMB Foundation as the main sponsor. Other partners in making this championship a success also include Figos, Panasonic, Revive, Giant, Masterskill University College the official paramedic team and Kosmo, the official media.

Working alongside the Rukun Tetangga from all states in Peninsular Malaysia, we can proudly say that 1Malaysia has become a reality through MAD’s dodgeball events as participation hails from all walks of life! Each competing club has a huge support from the community which comprises of an official club spokesperson, a club blogger to write about the team, and ‘cheerleaders’ made up of an awesome mix of people using instruments and recycled items to create noise and fanfare as show of support.

We have completed three Zone Championships – Central, Southern and Eastern Zones and we will embark duly on the last zone which is the Northern Zone. Top two clubs from each zone would then proceed to the National Finals which will take place in Melaka on the 22nd of May 2010 in conjunction with Minggu Perpaduan and of course dodgeball is the highlight as it is the epitome of unity.

Lastly, this writer would like to share with all of you out there is that integrity, honesty and sportsmanship play important roles in the game of dodgeball so much so that there is a system called the Honour System which is atypical for dodgeball worldwide. Points are given and taken away depending on the player’s integrity, honesty and sportsmanship shown during a game.

People have often asked, “So, does this Honor System work?” It sure does and having seen it work during the Eastern Zone Championship in Kuala Terengganu was truly amazing. We were totally blown away by a Pahang dodgeball club known as the Rompin Warriors by their sheer honesty and brilliant sportsmanship. At times when I was walking around taking photos of the game, I was not sure whether a player got hit because dodgeball is a fast paced game. But when it came to the Warriors, they will own up and walk off the court!

Throughout the whole championship, we have seen honesty, teamwork, and multi-racial harmony being demonstrated through sports. There are no segregation, no colonies, no discrimination, just pure people relationship and individuals connecting with their communities.

O Hui Lei is a Mass Communications student at UCSI and also a dodgeballer and MAD member.

Statements and ideologies surround us in our everyday lives.

See Hoon Peow outlines the two areas of subject matters – truth or taste – and how we differentiate and thus react and

respond to them.

20

Edu Aid

21

In thinking, the subject matter is very important in determining the method. What you are thinking about often dictates how you should think about it. If you are thinking about your relationship with your girl friend and you wish to apply the mathematical method that I share with you in my previous article, you will most probably get a knock on your head. You cannot be calculative about relationships!

In general, you will have to first determine if the matter you are thinking about is a matter of truth or taste. The first obvious difference between is in matter of truth; you will not have a choice of what you like. One plus one equals two; wherever you go and whoever you are it is still the same. Not negotiable. In a matter of taste, it depends on you. One man’s poison is another man’s food, every man their own way.How do we decide what belongs to the matter of truth and what belongs to the matter of taste? The test is simple, what is transcultural is clearly in the sphere of truth. Anything that is not or should not be transcultural is in the sphere of taste.

Transcultural simple means the matter should be the same wherever we go; whoever we meet and under whatever situation. One simple example is mathematics. Non-transcultural matter is matter that depends on the culture that it is in. For example, red is considered good, fortunate and lucky in the Chinese culture. But is considered bad and unlucky in many African cultures because it is the colour of blood.

When we are dealing with matters of truth, we are seeking the absolute; that means we

are looking for what is right and what is wrong. There is no compromise allowed. I have written in other articles about how we can reach that point. I shall be redundant; but one important point is usually a starting point that is proven true. From there, there are many ways that we can produce further truths. If we are dealing with matters of taste; there should not be any argument. Like what you like and do what you like. But there are often times when

certain people interfere with what others like. For example, we hear people commenting about another person’s sense of fashion. Usually, these people consider themselves to be more superior; more cultured or trendier; if you like. Can they do so unto others? Well, as long as they do force their ideologies and do it tastefully. How do we convince others that we have better taste? It is a matter of rhetoric; i.e. beautiful language to impress. But if you fail to impress others, you only have yourself to blame.

Whether one is arguing about matter of truth or matter of taste; one simple but important principle must be that his argument must be internally consistent. If a person says red is a good colour and is the colour of luck, and therefore beautiful. But on her wedding, she insists of wearing white, she is not being consistent in her beliefs. Unless, she can

qualify her belief about her taste about colours. Remember; you are allowed to argue anyway in matters of taste. There is no absolute right and wrong.

The difference, in terms of internal consistency in arguments between matters of truth and matters of taste is simply, in matters of truth your argument must start from an

established or

proven truth; while in arguing about matter of taste you can start wherever you like.

In arguing about matters of truth, we are trying to enlighten others so that they see the truth; therefore it is a solemn task. In arguing about matters of taste, we are only sharing our views, so do not be too insistent. However, we must always bear in mind that the truth is difficult to reach. Whatever, we know for sure now may only be valid at present. There is no guarantee that it will not be proven wrong one day. Subjects such as religion, ethics, art and so on are mixture of matters of truth and matters of taste.

For example there are definitely differences between good art and pseudo-art. But, what is more tasteful among each category is a subject of contention.

So, leave some room for discussion and be gentle in attitude. Otherwise, others will call you donkey. or

Attitudes are abundant throughout our life. We develop them as we grow up. Interacting with our environment makes us develop both positive and negative attitudes. Whether we are aware of this or not, the people that we interact with will be able to observe us expressing them. However, does one really know how it impacts us and especially during our schooling years?

The way we develop negative attitude is a complex experience in which the outcome is the way we would react in a constant manner that at most times, would be pleasing only to ourselves. In a group, negative attitudes common amongst them would be pleasing to the one who displays

them and also to those who deem that the expressed behavior is satisfying. At this point in time, I would like to take your attention away from explaining the deeper knowledge of negative attitudes and directly towards focusing on understanding how negative attitudes impact your studies. You may read more about attitudes through related books at a more convenient time.

Observe Others Who Show Negative AttitudesTake a look around at your classmates. Do you

like certain behaviors that they show. These could be any one of the following:• Purposely ignoring the teacher during class,• Making shifts in eye direction and showing displeasure when seeing a certain classmate,• Packing up of the school bag consistently way in advance before the end of class,• Showing no attention when instructions are been told,• Dressing that is consistently not in line with the school’s requirement.

The above are just a few examples of negative attitudes. There are many more types of negative attitudes and as soon as you take notice, you will

22

Edu Aid

23

start to see even more in your friends. If you are not in favor of them, how would you respond to their negative attitudes. Would you be irritated by them? How will your relationship with them be like? Only you would know the answer once you start to think about it.

So, just imagine if you have your own set of negative attitudes and what do others see in you then? Yes, at times, we should not care about what others think of us. But the unknown and surprising thing about our negative attitudes is that they do have a great impact on our studies.

How Does It Impact Our Studies?Any form of behavior that we express need a certain amount of energy, not just in thinking about it but also the energy that is needed to move every muscle for us to exhibit the behavior. Take the example of showing displeasure in our face when we see a teacher who is not our favorite and we usually try to show to others how we feel when he or she is passing by. This scenario is common amongst young children when they see another that they would not like to play with or share their toys with. The movement of muscles takes up energy.

The energy used can be very tremendous if we were to understand it. A situation that constantly exists will wear down our energy without us knowing. We can get worked up and show the negative attitudes and enjoy that moment in doing so. These types of moments can drain our energy. When you are into displaying these negative attitudes, you will find it exceptionally difficult to concentrate on your studies as your energy may be used up already in making facial expressions. The effects can come in various forms. You can miss what that teacher is saying or explaining about a subject. You will not enjoy the class as it progresses as you would not be able to catch up on the subject. You may not have enough energy to focus as you move to another class. One may say that not much of energy is wasted in these scenarios but I would like to stress that every once of energy counts if we want to excel in our studies.

But, is that all to it? We express our negative attitudes and we would not be able to focus on what is been taught. The answer is no, of course.

As I mentioned earlier, when we observe others displaying their negative attitudes, the least teacher would also be able to notice those who show their negative attitude during class. If this is so, what do you think the teacher will do? Simply tell the students to stop their negative attitudes and start listening to what is been presented? I would not think so.

Teachers are there to teach and many of them have a lot of work to do during the class. They have other students to attend to. The teacher would just simply ignore those students and continue as time is of importance for the rest of the class. You already know who the winners are in this case, right?

This is just one of the many ways in which negative attitudes can impact your studies. You will now have to take notice of your negative attitudes, if there any, so that they d not get in your way to focus on your studies.

Negative Attitude Impacts Your Studies

You have probably heard all about studying smart. Stephen Ronee Lau highlights that attitude plays an important role in studying and believes that negativity has a direct and profound

impact on your studying.

It’s bieber-Mania!

An old soul is the last thing you would expect to find inside Justin Bieber. But all it takes is one listen to the 16 year-old soul-singing phenomenon to realize that he is light years ahead of his manufactured pop peers.

After posting dozens of homemade videos on YouTube in 2007, where the multi-talented Bieber put his impeccable spin on songs from artists like Usher, Ne-Yo and Stevie Wonder, Justin racked up over 10,000,000 views purely from word of mouth.

“I started singing about three years ago,” says the Canadian native who grew up an only child in Stratford in the province of Ontario. “I entered a local singing competition called Stratford Idol. The other people in the competition had been taking singing lessons and had vocal coaches. I wasn’t taking it too seriously at the time, I would just sing around the house. I was only 12 and I got second place.”

Seven months after Justin started posting his videos online, former So So Def marketing executive Scooter Braun flew the then 13-year old singer to Atlanta, GA to meet with his elite colleagues, and in October of 2008, Justin Bieber officially signed Island Records, and released his debut album My World.

Lending R&B, pop and dance under the careful tutelage of mega-star Usher, this record shows off the young star’s sparkling and charming talents. Packed with catchy teen-orientated pop, R&B and mid-tempo ballads, Bieber recalls the versatility of performers such as Chris Brown, Ne-Yo and Michael Jackson.

The first single from My World 2.0 was ‘Baby’ which rose to #5 on the Billboard Hot 100 and is currently the #1 video on iTunes.

My Worlds features nine new songs, (a combination of My World 1.0 and My World 2.0), with collaborations with Ludacris on the song ‘Baby’ as well as on the song ‘Eenie Meenie’ featuring Sean Kingston. ‘One Time’ is the first single of the album and is currently hot on Malaysian airwaves.

Zee Avi Stole our Hearts Away

Rising to stardom after being discovered on YouTube by a

recording label, pint-sized

Zee Avi recently performed her first homecoming gig in Kuala Lumpur, and left

Malaysians wanting more.

What was it like performing in Malaysia? I was actually very excited to see everybody, to hear everybody. I have been waiting for this for awhile. I thought I’d be very nervous but surprisingly I’ve never felt more comfortable on stage. It was because everybody I cared about was there. This is home; the vibes, the energy is different, all in very good way.

Are you surprised with the response your album got? I didn’t expect that it will have such a good reception because my songs are like my diary entries! It’s nice to know that people relate to your work.

Where do your influences and experiences which you write about come from?I listen to a lot of music, and I watch a lot of movies too and I try to read as much as I can. Going places, experiencing different things, living life and meeting new people has definitely taught me to put into perspective what I think, how I see in myself and how I project my art. So you put all these together, and all these influence what I write and my music.

Which of your songs is the most meaningful for you?I’d say Honey Bee. It’s the only love song in the album.

If you have to write a song about your typical weekend, what would you call it and would it be about? It can be something about what I would want to do, in some place I’ve never been before. In my imaginary villa, my imaginary pool, with my close friends, and my imaginary cocktail.

What was your childhood like? I was very close to my group of friends, I’m very lucky to know who they are, is nice to have really great support group.

Are you an only child?Yes, for 17 years. I have a 7 year old brother now.

You were in London studying Fashion. What was that like? I was in London for four years. It was like a marriage. I really enjoyed it and miss it a lot. Now I’ve just moved to New York and a new experience awaits. My relationship with New York city has just started.

Being away, what do you miss most about Malaysia? The food! My mom’s cooking too.

What is the weirdest thing a fan has ever done for you?Hmm… I wouldn’t call it weird though! Recently I was in Singapore and two fans got to the airport at 7 in the morning to catch me and to say bye. I was like, I’m not even awake at that time, what are you doing there? *laughs* But they were such nice girls, so sweet of them!

We have 5 copies of Zee Avi’s self-titled debut album to be given away! To win, answer the following questions:

Where is Zee currently living?

On which social networking platform was Zee discovered?
