Another hectic quarter has gone by. We did not manage to achieve our sales target for the 3rd financial quarter. On a more positive note, our sales-to-date has inched a notch higher compared to the lows of 2012, and we managed to stay profitable. I remain optimistic about Silicon Connection’s future in the longer horizon, and in our ability to seize new growth opportunities along the way. In many other areas, we have done well. Our business model remains healthy and we continue to build on our strengths and knowledge. Talking about knowledge, I am pretty sure all Silicon Connectors can feel the increased efforts to push for training at all levels lately. In the past few weeks, we had arranged numerous training sessions: Poco Graphite (conducted by Beng Tiong), PECVD Boats (Ross Stalker), Drums & Dispense (Ray Wolf), Wafer Shippers (LC Tan & Lai Heng). Further up north, HM Chan braved the cold and “coolly” represented us for a training conducted in Korea (at Entegris’ Pureline facility). Back in office for our monthly internal trainings, Daniel has been working very hard to conduct product trainings for Admin and CS staff for the wide range of products we carry. Besides product training, we encourage staff to attend external training programs such as IT, Finance or other office productivity courses. Come 2014, we will announce further refinement to our training budget to ensure we stay on top of the curve in terms of training and development. Training and teambuilding activities have always been a strategic focus for us. That is one big pillar that binds us and holds us up against a stormy future. However, successful organisation has to be outward looking while same time trying to perfect their internal system. Otherwise, we may realise only too late we are in the middle of a dessert without a camel. Let’s not lose touch with the changing market place and the unpredictable currents sweeping the world now. Hence, we will need to open our eyes and ears with customers, suppliers and other stakeholders. And we need to be conscious of whatever impact (positive or negative, small or large) our business dealings may impact others. Whatever is good for the company may not necessarily be good for the world at

large. A child feeding monkeys with bananas in a nature reserve for example, may feel he has done the animal a good deed. But he or she, along with many other ignorant park goers will inadvertently altered the animal’s feeding behaviour and negatively impact the ecosystem in the long run. Similarly companies may over pay or under pay for services, promote unhealthy work ethics, sell inferior products with hidden safety issues or environmental costs etc., all in the name of business. Instead of helping to alleviate problems that have besieged the world, we may unknowingly contribute to even more problems. Hence we must never stop questioning if our own policies are balanced and structured correctly to deliver positive impact, beyond our own self-interest. If we can ensure our work is and always be meaningful, then our seemingly endless (sometimes challenging, other times plain tedious) tasks at workplace will become more palatable. Finally, may the coming year end festivities bring you joy and spiritual fulfilment! Merry Christmas in advance! K.C. Tan

Another quarter, another write up… This time round, I shall talk a little bit about something that is very important to all of us. That is, our health. Singapore is adopting a national, strategic and long term approach to achieve sustainable, continuous improvement in Workplace Safety and Health performance. One of the aims is to bring down the national fatality rate to less than 1.8 per 100,000 workers by 2018, and thus achieve one of the best safety records in the world. “The Ministry of Manpower places considerable emphasis on inculcating a culture of safety and health in all workplaces, and reinforcing the message that poor safety management could lead to costly losses. All employees and stakeholders are encouraged to take responsibility for workplace safety and health, and proactively plan to minimise risks. Also, those who create workplace safety and health risks will be held accountable.” Quite a strong statement isn’t it? Anyway, we have taken the cue from MOM and have achieved our Bizsafe certification back in June last year. It means that we have reviewed and covered the safety aspect of our workplace. We have been certified by the authority and our working environment is now safer. Going forward, for continuous workplace improvement we have to take it to the next level, beyond safety. That is, we have to look into the H (health) aspect of the WSH. If we can achieve both a healthier and safer workplace environment, then we can truly proclaim that we have achieved our WSH goal. How do we go about doing it? Well, there are many ways and directions that we can embark on. However, I’m going to just stay focus on a few key aspects that I feel are important for a start. That is , 1) Create a healthy work environment for all through improved health and
wellness

2) Take a comprehensive approach to promoting health and wellness 3) Encourage workers to take responsibility for their own health, safety and
wellness 4) Provide information and resources to all to assist them in making healthy
lifestyle choices and to achieve and maintain good health To execute and achieve all these are easier said than done. It will require planning, resources, time, financial expenditures and commitment to pull it through. I hope there’s a short cut, but as of now, there isn’t one. Hence, I’m going to take the best possible path to implement it. Hope luck is on our side and we can get some assistance to get things going in early 2014. Andy Ng 13 November 2013

Marketing Have you seen the truck with our company’s advertisement? We are having a contest now (15th November to 15th December 2013) for our customers to win prizes. All they have to do is to take a picture of themselves with the truck and post it on our facebook page. Have you participated? HR/Admin On 20th September 2013, we invited Ms Saffron Poh to give a talk on ‘Personal Will Planning’. The session focused on the pros of making a will, what would happen if we did not prepare a will, Rules of Distribution, etc. To emphasize the importance of having a will, she brought up 2 scenarios (where no will was made) which really surprised some of us. The first was: a couple had died in an accident, how would the law determine who passed away first before the paramedic arrived? According to the laws, the person who was older would be considered the first casualty, thus if no will was made by the 1st deceased, the family of the 2nd deceased would inherit all the assets including the 1st deceased’s assets. The other was: the nephew of an old lady was not able to

inherit the assets left by her and her husband because he was the nephew of the old lady and not the husband. When the old lady passed away, whatever money/assets she had would be inherited by her husband. When the husband passed away, the old lady’s nephew was not able to inherit it as he was not related to the old lady’s husband. The assets went to the government instead. The session had definitely broaden our insights on this topic. In the future, HR/Admin department will try to organize this type of non-work related seminar/talk which will be of benefit to the majority of the staff.

This is my 2nd writing story (after my 1st story about Thai Flooding in 2011). Actually I’m not good in writing long story & don’t have any story to share with. Since SG asked and I just think of recently event in Oct’13 which I believe all of us still remember. Yes, it’s our company gathering at Pulau Ubin. I will try to write this newsletter by using pictures to tell the story. I’m sure that many of us are a bit worried/concerned when we knew that company decided to have the company gathering (Team Building) for this year over at Pulau Ubin and it’s more worried/concerned when we see their program especially cooking by ourselves for lunch !!! I doubt oversea guys know about Pulau Ubin place before or even some of our local S’pore people. My 1st impression is our journey blue bag which is very perfect (everything inside & prepared such as hat/cap, water bottle, mosquito spray, cracker, sweet, towel, … etc). From Changi Ferry Terminal, we took ferry about 10 minutes to reach Pulau Ubin Island.

Then we started with our program (playing games beside the beach – nice view). Then we divided into 2 groups to start our walking challenge around the island. It’s fun & enjoyable even it’s a bit hot but it’s not that bad as we expected before.

After our enjoyable sightseeing the island by walking here & there, it’s time for us to leave the island and have our dinner at mainland before home sweet home. We must thanks for Adeline & others who arrange this perfect company gathering (Team Building). I’m pretty sure that everyone have fun, enjoy, relax and can release our stress from our working the whole year. Lastly I wish all of us Merry Christmas !!! & Happy New Year 2014 !!! When you see or hear the word “winter”, what does it come instantly to your mind ? What do they have in common ? Yes the colour white & coldness.. White is a symbol of cleanliness, purity, innocence, honesty…. But do not live your life like a white piece of paper…. Besides striving to do our best yearly in order to achieve our business target, we do enjoy and participate in a number of company activities like birthday celebration, team building, external & internal trainings (either for personal or work enhancement), Xmas gift exchange, social responsible events etc. that balance and light up our working lifestyle. Another month to go before we say “sayonara” to year 2013, hope this last edition of the newsletter adds on some beautiful colours and warmth to you in this season… Wishing all in advance a Very Happy X’mas ! See you next year ! SG Kwong 2 December2013
