gam e itself was unimportant. It was the fact that athletics had | c em en ted another crack in relationships. It came like that Kearny- H a rris o n basketball game of last year Taking them all in all these jp eace pact atfaiirs are to be admired. ■ J

Stout mayors puffing viciously on long black coronas, marching ot j th e middle of the field to shake hinds—crowds roaring and cheering and secretly hoping they will sock each other; cheer leaderesses and c h e e r leaders urging on the spectators to greater noise; bands .gravely j marching to the other's side and playing tthe alma mater howl while | the rooters try to still chattering teeth to sing; referees zealiously trying to show their fairness; somewhat mellowed old gentlemen telling eacho th e r w h en ; there is your peace game in a nu t shell.

Ancient traditions arc alright of course, but they in time become worn and seamed. They need a freshening something or other. Princeton and Harvard went about their s.'-correctly; When they resume relations it will be with renewed vigor, before larger crowds. The same applies to Army and Navy. After all what is the use of being friends if you can t scrap once in a while?A L E A G U E “ N A T U R A L ”W HAT a natural a league between Lyndhurst, Nutley, Belleville and

Rutherford would be, Bob King commented at the game, Saturday . Yeah, what a natural. Lyndhurst and Rutherford are situated like Nutley and Belleville. But whether Rutherford would enter into a n y such league would be problematical. If its obstinacy in refusing to withdraw from the Northern New Jersey group is an indication Lyndhurst, Belleville and Nutley would have to fight without the services of Rutherlord

B ut on th e S o u th is a school th a t could be inc luded in .such a league. T h e re are four schools w h ich are not a t th is m om ent locked u p in any league. L yndhurst r ig h t now would be the weaker of the four But a

y e a r would change all that, It is not thinking ahead too far now to p la n for a real league. East R utherford in the new league that the Blue, and ; Gold , has entered wnl provide nearby competition, but Bogota, Garfield and Tenafly are too removed, too foreign j>f Lyndhurst, to incite the-interest that is necessary for the success of a league. W ilC iH B O R L Y E N E M IE S

R u th erford is uistified a bit in not d ropping from its present league All of the games in which it engages have been- played now fo r a num ber p f yeirs. A certain quantity o f tradition accompanies each one- o f them . That the Blue and W hite invariably wins by overw helm ing scores d<K.‘s not seeiii to dampen the spirit of the other leag u ers A Lyndhurst Kearny: or, Lyndhurst-N utlcy; o r a Lyndhurst- B ellcvillc game would draw large crowds. Kearny has almost leagued ltsell with Belleville and Nutley without realizing it. Include Lyndhurst in it and there is your Tri-County Loop. As is usual among the folks w ho arc so anxious to class themselves as experts the fault of Kearny's defeats lie ip Fogarty, the Coach. Whenever a team loses the search for the cause starts immediately and p u t as immediately it usually ends up in the Coach's direction. Fogarty was hampered by all sorts of injuries this season. Added to t i n t the majority of his men were green. Coaching a large squad is d o joke in any sort of weather; that most of the hopefuls are unexperienced does not add to the fun. SOME SOUND SENSE EXPECTED

C h an ce llo r Ed w ard R . W alker, a ll reports, speeches and the statem ents of the law yers to the contrary notw ithstanding, has assumed ju risd iction in the Hague habeas corpus case, going over the head of h is V ice C han cello r, John J. Fallon .

L e t us hope that w ith h is usual sound sense he w ill brush aside the subdeties of the law yers and decide the main question w h ich is presented. T h a t is:

W h eth er o r not the m ayor of Jersey C ity m ay or may not disregard a subpoena to appear and testify before a jo in t com m ittee o f th e legislature?

A ll o f the co llateral and subordinate issues may furnish amusement for the legal profession but they are very tiresom e and expensive to the masses of the people w ho m ust pay for these diversions.

M ayo r H ague w as sim ply asked, under the form s of law , to do w hat thousands of citizens in th is and other states have done— appear on the w itness stand. H e is, at the best, no better than anybody else. H e could de cline to answ er such questions as in h is judgment w ould incrim inate him .

E ith e r the legislature has the right to conduct the inq u iry it has undertaken, through a com m ittee, o r it has not. E ith e r its processes w ere defective o r correct. E ith er it m ay enforce its rulings o r it has no power to do so.

P rio r to the acceptance of ju risd iction by the C h a n cellor yesterday, the habeas corpus case threatened to develop a d ash between the legislative and the jud icial branches of the governm ent, w h ich should be m utually helpful and not hostile. It is to be expected that C h a n cellor W alk er w ill put an end to this expensive law yer's quarrel.
