Gen Con Clarifies Charity

Issue

Gary‟s favored charities. Gen Con contacted CCF

about our intentions and asked for a logo and

some promotional materials that we could use on

our website. We were informed by a person at CCF that they would not be able to provide us

with these materials, apparently due to our asso-

ciation with D&D. We were not comfortable with this position, considering Gary‟s role as co-

founder of D&D, and founder of Gen Con, and

therefore we decided to pick a different charity. We informed the Gygax family of our decision

and the reason behind it, and asked if there was

another charity they would like us to consider. Fisher House was suggested, as it too was a fa-

vored charity of Gary‟s. Considering the out-

standing services this charity provides to service members, veterans, and their families, we knew

Fisher House would be a great charity for Gen

Con to support. We later found out that we had been misinformed as to CCF‟s position in regards

to D&D and Gen Con, but by then we had already

chosen Fisher House as our charity, and an-nouncements and promotions were already made

and in the works, such that it would not have been

possible to change charities at that point. To be clear, Gen Con made the decision not to

donate to CCF; at no time did CCF refuse to take charity money from Gen Con. Gen Con chooses a

show charity long before Gen Con Indy ever

takes place.”

Wizards Discontinuing Minis

Skirmish Game

Wizards of the Coast will end support

for its Dungeons and Dragons Minia-

tures skirmish game in the coming

months, as it moves its D&D Minia-

tures from a separate game to acting

only as accessories for the D&D RPG.

The next D&D Minis release, Demon-

web in November, will be the last to

include skirmish statistics. No further

D&D Miniatures skirmish events will

be officially sanctioned after D&D Ex-

perience in February. WotC will con-

tinue to update miniatures stats from

previous sets to the current ruleset, to

be completed by mid-2009.

Sanctioned skirmish play began to de-

cline in 2006, according to a post by

D&D Sr. Brand Manager Scott Rouse,

a trend that the company had not been

able to reverse. He stated that D&D

Minis were primarily being used for

roleplay support, rather than as a sepa-

rate game. Rouse expressed regret at

the ending of support for the skirmish

game, along with the hope that it would

continue at some level. “We hope to

see skirmish play continue at the grass-

roots level, using the hundreds of

miniatures produced for the game over

the past six years and encouraged by

the passionate fan sites that exist for the

D&D Miniatures skirmish game,” he

said.

There were recently rumors out that the

Christian Children‟s Fund refused char-

ity auction money from Gen Con due to

its association with D&D. Jeannette

LeGault, Director of Event Program-

ming for Gen Con LLC, released this

statement: “In choosing the charity for 2008,

I‟ve been a Star Wars Fan my whole

life. Ever since my dad and I walked

down to the local theater to see it.

I‟ve been collecting toys and playing

video games off and on since. Then

console games got better, and more reli-

able than PC; Dark Forces was my bread

and butter. But I needed „Meat”.

At College one of the dorm mates, a

writer, was running a Star Wars D6 ad-

venture by West End Games-

WOW, I was hooked! I bought EVERY-

THING West End Games made for Star

Wars, including the metal minis; which

soon led to hunting down specific minis

from other figure lines for our ever

evolving games. Which in turn evolved

into squad battles. I soon took up not

only SW Minia-

tures Battles,

but also dabbled

in WH40K.

After a while

my college

friends and I

moved apart

and I had seem-

ingly moved on

but still col-

lected SW stuff.

Then Wizards of the Coast came out

with their own miniatures in 2004. I

was in. (My first booster had Boba Fett,

duh!)

I started playing the game with my co-

worker Mike C. and quickly started

looking for venues that had other inter-

ested players. I bounced back and forth

as time allowed to other games, but I

always stick to Star Wars Mini‟s

I‟ve worked very hard at keeping SWM

active and available to people in Cincin-

nati for the last 4 years, even giving

away mini‟s so the “New Guy” can stay

in the game and have fun. You‟ll find

me every Sunday at YQ plying or teach-

ing SWM or lurking on the numerous

forums…

Goodman Games has announced an agreement with Dias Ex Machina Games

to publish a Fourth Edition-compatible edition of Amethyst, a D&D setting that examines what would happen if a fantasy

world of dragon, elves and fairies suddenly ap-

peared in the real world. Dias Ex Machina has previously published a version of Amethyst under

3.5 rules and it won “Honorable Mention” in the D&D settings category in the 2008 GenCon

ENnie Awards. Goodman‟s 4E version of Ame-

thyst will be published under the GSL license from Wizards of the Coast utilizing Dungeons &

Dragons 4th Edition mechanics. Goodman plans

on releasing the 256-page core setting book Amethyst: Foundation as a PDF in April and in a

hardcover print edition at GenCon 2009.

According to Palladium Books, the zombie

RPG, Dead Reign, is at the printer and

scheduled to ship Nov. 14. "Dead Reign may be the most frightening, compelling and fun

to play role-playing game setting Palladium

has ever produced. If zombies are your thing, we think you will fall in love with this

game."

Brave human survivors refuse to lie down and die! They battle the walking dead on all

fronts, watch each other‟s backs, struggle to

forge safe havens away from the cities,

rescue other survivors and fight without

respite.

Review: World of Warcraft Minis

The World of Warcraft Miniatures Game is, at its heart, simple. Players have one or more characters, and each character has a stat card listing several basic abilities –

armor, resist (vs. magic), and health – plus the number of dice rolled using that char-

acter‟s different attack modes, and the all-important Honor stat. Hits are scored by rolling a “4” or higher on a ten-sided die, and the player being attacked has a chance

to reduce this damage with similarly success-

ful rolls against the Armor stat. To win the game, players must score victory

points equal to the party‟s combined Honor

score. Players claim victory points by defeat-ing a foe (reducing that character‟s Health

stat to zero) and by being on or adjacent to

the Victory Point location at the end of turns five and ten.

The World of Warcraft Miniatures Game is

fast-moving fun, but is limited in scope. It works best with two players; games with more players or more than four characters

on a side become ponderous and sluggish. Like its online counterpart, this game

works well on a smaller scale.

The first expansion from Phoenix Interactive, the new company producing the Warlord CCG will

street November 30th. Warlord: Shattered Em-

pires will consist of 168 cards, 148 of which are totally new. The set will be packaged in the same

way the base set was, in three Adventure Path

sets, containing two decks of 55 cards each. The storyline continues from the one established

in the base set. A magical explosion has opened

the way to the old empire of Thessyria, and with power structures shaken up, there are opportunities for new heroes

and adventures.

Mayfair Games has announced that it will release Steam, a new train game by Martin Wallace based on his popular Age

of Steam game, in Q1 2009. Wallace has created two new

versions of the game: one with rules that emphasize ease of play and a shortened playing time, and another with auctions

and maintenance costs, for more experienced players.

The game is for three to six players ages 10 and up, and will play in 90-120 minutes. MSRP is $42.00.

The player is in charge of a railway company, which he is

trying to run to build track, deliver goods, and become the greatest railroad of all. Maps of New York and Germany‟s Ruhr Valley are included.

The new game‟s components will be compatible with previous editions.

Initial trade response to Battlestar Galactica: The Board Game has been strong,

according to a Fantasy Flight Games spokesperson. The first wave of product has

been totally sold at the manufacturer level; and the second wave, which will arrive in mid-November, is about half sold. Those two waves will be the extent of BSG: TBG

product in 2008. A third wave of the game is planned for shipment in January.
