ST AUGUSTINE’S CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL AND SIXTH FORM DEVELOPING THE WHOLE PERSON
Welcome from the Principal
Dear Students, Parents and Carers
The Sixth Form at St Augustine’s Catholic High School and Sixth Form offers many exciting opportunities which will prove both challenging and rewarding – intellectually, spiritually and emotionally. Within a caring, friendly and structured environment you will be encouraged to realise your full potential both in your academic studies and in the ways in which you learn to interact with others – your peers, our staff and, crucially, our younger members of the School community. As a Sixth Former you will also have the opportunity to take on new responsibilities and commitments. We want them to become involved with mentoring the younger students, whilst building and developing their leadership opportunities. We are proudly part of the Magnificat Consortium of Schools comprising St Augustine’s, St Benedict’s and Trinity Catholic School in Leamington Spa. This affords students a much wider variety of enrichment opportunity, for example active involvement with the Cambridge University Consortium, broader and deeper support with higher education engagement plus active employer related networking. Students can enhance and augment their study with pertinent and enjoyable activities which support their post-18 career paths. Paramount to the sixth form journey is the need for aspirations, discipline and high levels of organisation. With a focus on academic studies, I trust this Curriculum Booklet highlights the requirements of their studies. Yours faithfully
G T O’Connor BSc (Hons) NPQH Principal

ST AUGUSTINE’S CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL AND SIXTH FORM DEVELOPING THE WHOLE PERSON
Welcome from the Vice Principal, Head of Sixth Form
Dear Parents/Carers Moving into the Sixth Form is a significant step in academic and personal development. The aims of the Sixth Form curriculum are:
• to provide an academic curriculum which is appropriate for each pupil in its range and demands
• to encourage and develop academic skills of increasingly independent study, research and thought
• to develop wider personal skills that allow confident entry into higher education or employment
• to encourage pupils to consider and discuss issues relevant to them as they move towards adulthood.
This booklet is a guide to the curriculum your child will be studying across this year. It provides an overview of subject content and details of assessment topics so you are aware of the sequence of the year. All students start four level 3 subjects at the start of Year 12, and can drop to three following October half-term. This can be a combination of BTECs and A-levels. Staff have also provided information on resources to access to prepare for post-16 study as well as possible destinations. In addition to this formal curriculum, we have provided greater information on the activities that take place in Core RE and pastoral sessions which are crucial in ensuring the development of the whole child. Further details on each subject can be found on our website along with the 2021/22 entry requirements for each subject. Kind regards
Mr A Madden Vice Principal, Head of Sixth Form

Catholic Life Miss Martin, Head of RE
What does it mean to be part of a Catholic Sixth Form?
✓ You will be treated with dignity, compassion and respect at all times
✓ You will be expected to treat others with dignity, compassion and respect at all times in return
✓ You will have the same opportunities as your peers (mainly an equal opportunity to succeed)
✓ You will be encouraged to give back to the school & wider community, through volunteer & charity
work
✓ You will be given opportunity to develop your spirituality, irrespective of your religious/spiritual beliefs
✓ You will experience internal retreats and have the option to go on external retreats
✓ You will have one lesson of Religious Education per week on your timetable
EPQ Edexcel
✓ You will have the opportunity to complete the Edexcel Extended Project Qualification (EPQ)
throughout Year 12
✓ EPQ is an individual research project, for which you can gain up to half an A-Level (28 UCAS points);
there will be a mixture of taught sessions and research lessons – taught lessons will be on a variety of
topics.
✓ You will choose a topic that interests you to complete your project on, and pick a particular
question/area to research within that topic that has a philosophical, ethical or moral aspect that can be
debated
✓ Your project can take one of two forms: 5000-6000 word essay or an artefact with a rationale
Why complete an EPQ?
✓ It gives you something additional to add to your personal statement for a UCAS (university)
application – makes yours stand out
✓ It gives you something to talk about at an interview with a university should you have to attend one –
project is university style, proves you’re capable of accessing higher education
✓ You can receive up to half an A-Level, additional to the A-Levels you are already studying – extra
qualification
✓ An EPQ could mean you receive a reduced offer from a university for a particular course e.g.
Birmingham University offered BBB + EPQ instead of ABB for September 2020
✓ UCAS points gained from an EPQ can also be used to negotiate through clearing should you not
achieve the grades to get onto your preferred course
✓ 1 in 5 successful applicants to redbrick universities have now done EPQ
✓ Cambridge University: ‘Students who use the EPQ as a focus for valued content within the personal
statement are looked upon favourably’

Attitudes and Behaviour Mr Ross, Assistant Head of Sixth Form - Pastoral
The pastoral week is a fundamental aspect of our curriculum. Each day starts with a 20-minute tutor period.
These sessions include a daily prayer/reflection in addition to the programme outlined below.

Tutors play a key role in our pastoral curriculum; they have the opportunity to meet with individual
students every Friday where they can reflect on current progress and help with any issues students
may be facing.
We come together twice a week during Collective Worship and Assembly where we can reflect on
current issues as a Sixth Form community.

VESPA Mrs Passalacqua, Assistant Head of Sixth Form - Curriculum
We believe that our students should be equipped for both their sixth form studies but also for their lives as adults beyond the school environment. By means of support for this, we provide a non-cognitive approach called VESPA which focuses on the issues below.
Vision: How well do you know what you want to achieve?
(Duckworth, 2007 & St Clair-Thompson et al., 2014)
Effort: How many hours of independent work do you do?
(Jung et. al., 2016 & Heckman & Kautz, 2012)
Systems: How do you organise your learning and your time?
(Hassanbeigi, 2011)
Practice: What kind of work do you do to practise your skills?
(Dunlosky et al. 2013)
Attitude: How do you respond to setbacks?
(Stankov & Lee, 2014)
VESPA is concerned with developing students’ mindsets so that THEY can learn now and for the rest of their lives.

•Unit 1- The unit will be assessed through one paper of 80 marks lasting two hours that will be set and marked by Pearson. Learners will be assessed through a number of short- and long-answer problem-solving questions. Learners will need to explore and relate to the engineering contexts and data presented. Assessment will focus on learners’ ability to solve problems that require individual and combined application of mathematical techniques, and electrical, electronic and mechanical principles to solve engineering problems. The assessment availability is twice a year in January and May/June. The first assessment availability is May/June 2017. Sample assessment materials will be available to help centres prepare learners for assessment. •Unit 2- To complete the assessment task within this unit, they will need to draw on their learning from across their programme. Assignment based. •Unit 3- This unit is assessed by a set task of 60 marks provided by Pearson and completed under supervised conditions. Part A is given to learners one week before Part B is scheduled. Learners are advised to spend no more than 3 hours on Part A. Learners will be given a case study and produce independent research, no design work should take place at this time, the perimeters of the design are contained in part B. The supervised assessment period is eight hours and can be arranged over a number of sessions within a two-week assessment period timetabled by Pearson, once the assessment has started the learner must complete within five days. During the supervised assessment period, learners will complete a task that will require them to follow a standard development process of interpreting a brief, scoping initial design ideas, preparing a design proposal and evaluating their proposal. The assessment availability is December/January and May/June each year. The first assessment availability is May/June 2017. Sample assessment materials will be available to help centres prepare learners for assessment. •Unit 10- Assignment based
