Greenfields Primary School Termly Overview Year 4 - Summer 2014 Spellings: these will be given out each week and then tested on the following Friday. (Mon-Poplar, Fri-Oak) Maths: a homework task will be set each week and needs to be handed in the following week. The task may be paper-based, or on ‘I am Learning’. Reading: children should be reading at least three times per week at home and this should be recorded in their planner. Please refer to the Reading Focuses in the planner. This term we will be starting with our poetry topic. We will read a number of poems that use similes, metaphors and other simple im- ages to create vivid pictures. We will discuss the poet's use of language, identifying dis- tinctive features that have been used. Then the children write their own poems using everything we have learnt. Our second literacy topic will be ‘plays.’ We will read and explore the characteristics of playscripts. We will explore characters, im- provise dialogue, look at play sets and use this as the basis for writing our own short playscripts. Then we will perform our plays and evaluate each others performances. Use symbols correctly, including less than( <), greater than (>), equals (=). Round any positive integer less than 1000 to the nearest 10 or 100. Recognise simple factions that are several parts of a whole, and mixed numbers; Recognise the equivalence of simple fractions. Use known number facts and place value to add or subtract mentally, including any pair of two-digit whole numbers. Carry out column addition and subtraction of two inte- gers less than 1000, and column addition of more than two such integers. Know by heart facts for the 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10 multiplication tables. Derive quickly division facts corresponding to the 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10 multiplication tables. Find remainders after division. Know and use the relationship between familiar units of capacity. Choose and use appropriate operations and ways of calculating to solve problems. To know what the term ‘habitat’ means; To identify different physical aspects of habitats; To investigate animals and their habitats; To understand what is meant by a ‘food chain’; To understand the terms ‘carnivore’ and ‘herbivore’. To promote healthy eating through planting, growing, harvesting and cooking our own produce.

This term our topic in the ‘Vicious Vikings’ and we will be learning about:

• The Viking way of life;

• Invading and settling;

• Where the Vikings came from and how they travelled (which will link into our DT

project);

• Viking raids and why they raided monasteries.

This term we will be learning about computer

programming, including:

• What an algorithm is;

• To put series of instructions in order;

• To use the Hopscotch iPad app to create pro-

gramming codes to achieve an outcome;

• To evaluate, debug and improve our program-

ming coding.

• Tennis;

• Cricket & rounders;

• Athletics;

• Gym & dance sessions.

• Our art work will be linked to our theme

about the Vikings. The children design & make

woven Viking bracelets, helmets and they will

sketch Viking portraits.

• In DT we will design, make and evaluate a Vi-

king longship, which must be able to hold

‘stolen treasure’ from a Viking raid and meet

our given criteria.

In RE we will be considering the following ques-

tions:

• Who is my neighbour?

• Why have some people chosen to devote their

lives to their neighbours?

• How can we love our neighbour?

In PSHE we will be looking at positive relationships and also how we can protect our environment

through reducing the amount of litter we produce.

Oak music: to continue to learn about music no-

tation through playing the folk whistle or flute.

Poplar music: to create, perform and analyse

short descriptive compositions that combine

sounds, movements and words.

MFL: to make links between phonemes, rhymes

and spellings. To read aloud and write simple

words and phrases. To follow units 11 and 12,

which include describing and naming animals and

the weather.
