Esna Baydin - Gianandrea Fiorillo - Andrea Policastro

GEA II the innovative concept you would never expect

FOR THREE YOUNG YACHT DESIGNERS, THE ORIGINAL CONCEPT OF THE SAILING BOAT HAS ALREADY EARNED TOP MARKS AT THE POLITECNICO DI MILANO. NOW, IT CAN BOOST THEIR CAREERS.

«For this project, we decided to experiment by designing one of the fastest boat possible, but also technological, innovative and, above all, light». Gianandrea Fiorillo, a 24-year-old naval engineer, tells the con-cept of GEA II, the project to which he worked with the interior archi-tect Andrea Policastro and the architect Esna Baydin. They are the three yacht designers who designed GEA II: a 24-meter sailboat con-ceived from the intuition of mixing the shape and performance of a crossing boat with the clean and accessible style of a daysailer.GEA II is the final project of the Master’s degree at the Politecnico di Milano - Poli.Design just concluded by young yacht designers. The concept was much appreciated by the commission: the three creators deserved the highest marks (110/110) for their project, al-ready published in various specialized magazines. A result that has enhanced the teamwork of the three designers, rewarded for being able to make the most of the skills of each one, showing that they can work in synergy despite the three distinct and separate roles. The final product is a boat that is appreciated in every aspect, in every compo-nent, even in small details.

The projectsGianandrea Fiorillo – just enrolled at MSc Maritime Engineering: Yacht and Small Craft of the University of Southampton, after graduating in Naval Engineering in Naples and a year of experience in the field at the Mylius Yachts shipyard in Piacenza – he was mainly involved in naval architecture and performance study, bringing his experience as an agonistic sailor to the entire project.Andrea Policastro, otherwise, spent his entire university career in Mi-

lan, with a first degree in interior design, with a thesis in residential ar-chitecture and a Master in Yacht Design, he worked on interior design (choice of materials, of the furniture and organization of the spaces).Esna Baydin, the youngest of the three, Turkish from Istanbul, has thought of the interior architecture, ergonomics and usability and ac-cessibility of the boat, putting into practice the experience gained in her year of work at the Matteo Costa Yacht Design yard. The concept of GEA II is, therefore, a very fast boat, super light but also technological, characterized by some really innovative elements such as the DSS (dynamic stability system) that allows you to increase the righting moment of the boat, giving you a totally different approach to all the concept. The wing in optimum condition gives 30% of the to-tal righting moment and higher speed. The choice was made thanks to speed prediction programs that highlighted the advantages offered by this system compared to the one initially designed with Canting Keel. An element of novelty is also the retractable propulsion system which, as Fiorillo explains, «serves to make the boat like a dinghy», a model that does not have a propulsor in the water when you sail. Usu-ally systems of this type are not applied on boats of this size, but it is likely that in the future it will be adopted more and more often, mak-ing GEA II a concept that is provocative as well as innovative. «In this project – says Esna Baydin – we pushed ourselves beyond the limit to look for all existing technologies, those that do not exist and those that may be applicable. We wanted to evaluate all the possibilities with ex-tensive market research».GEA II has a LOA of 23.84m a Bmax of 6.12m and she weighs in con-ditions of Light Craft only 23.5t, thanks to the structure of the shell

Exterior design GEAII.

made by a carbon sandwich filled with Nomex. The sail area, thanks to the high Righting Moment guaranteed by the DSS is distributed on a 230mq MainSail, while Jib and Gennaker are held from 165sqm and 516sqm. The boat is provided of a single cabin: the master one, that is located in the bow with a large skylight to emphasize the nat-ural light. From the master cabin, a small corridor leads you to the common living area, a hybrid space between interior and exterior: re-sult of the glass dome roof. The cockpit is developed on different lev-els characterized by organic shapes. «In this way, we have been able to obtain a wide terrace with a flat superstructure in carbon fiber and PMMA. The final result is a pure luxury boat characterized by ex-treme performance», says Andrea Policastro. The three young yacht designers know they still have their whole career ahead, for this rea-son they are already projected into the future with different ambitions. Gianandrea Fiorillo would like to complete his training by becoming a yacht designer and a performance engineer (thanks to the South-ampton MSc). The course of study followed so far has been «100% satisfactory», he says. Even the choice of Mylius Yachts as first ap-proach to the yacht designing field proved to be right: the possibili-ty to work with more experienced engineers, to see concretely all the steps of making a boat, «specially to measure the distance between ideas and practice», made this last year very positive. However, at the same time, there is the desire not to be reduced to a job confined ex-clusively to a technical office, «hence the idea of going to Southamp-ton to become a performance engineer, then going beyond the tech-nical aspect, learning how to plan, how to think a sailing yacht».For Andrea Policastro, instead, in the more immediate future there is M2 Atelier: he is part of the working team that is working on two me-ga-yachts. But he too intends to take another step, to grow again. He looks abroad, to the benefits of growth that must be cultural first: the long-term goal is to spend a period in a country in Northern Europe, to merge different cultures and design traditions, as to create some-thing innovative and outside the box. Even Esna Baydin has certain-ties only in the short term. Currently she is working with Matteo Cos-ta Yacht Design, but she will look for another shipyard, for another experience, different on a human and working level. «I would like to dedicate my life – says Esna – to improve myself in this field and to become more innovative, and wherever I visit, all around the world, I would like to see my boats floating with satisfied faces on them».
