Staying AheadIn sailing, the ability to get out in front and stay there demands a finely tuned set of skills, attitude, and hard-won experience. For C-Tech, that means intimately understanding the requirements of our customers and evolving our skill sets by constantly rethinking our materials, designs and manufacturing techniques.

Race-bred Mind-set Few environments can match the rigorous demands of the sea and the finely honed human skills and equipment needed to master it. In the unforgiving world of competitive sailing, there is no substitute for hard-won experience.

Our customers like to know that we are, and always have been, competitive sailors, who are highly experienced in top-level national and international racing. We understand the fine equipment tolerances that frequently provide the winning performance margin. Our inquisitive minds never stop asking the question: “Is there a better way to do this?”

Progressive ThinkingAt C-Tech, we are naturally inventive and highly motivated. While others imitate, we take the harder route of using our fresh thinking to engineer original, fit-for-purpose products that push the boundaries of performance.

Detail MasteryWe believe three elements are essential to creating world-winning sailing products – a clear eye for detail, an uncompromising drive for perfection and craftsmanship.

Technical Know-how C-Tech keeps abreast of global technical advances and, as new processes and materials become available and prove themselves, they are introduced into our products. In addition, our ability to design and build machinery in-house enables us to work rapidly on the development of new product lines.

Custom Solutions Our customers regularly face new challenges but they always know they can rely on our in-depth knowledge to come up with solutions specifically tailored to meet their evolving needs.

TeamworkAt C-Tech, we have a strong culture that encourages ideas and the pooling of our complementary skills to work as a close-knit team. Our cumulative hands-on experience and shared ideas drive a constant stream of innovation.

Manufacturing and MaterialsWe have a well-equipped 2,000m2 factory in Auckland, New Zealand, capable of undertaking a broad range of processes, including mandrel wrapping, female moulding, vacuum infusion, oven and autoclave curing, complete fit-out, painting and finishing of products. C-Tech utilises a full range of composite materials to satisfy our customers’ requirements. These include Prepreg resin systems, E-glass and S-glass, epoxy and phenolic resin systems, high modulus fibres, high-temperature materials and titanium alloys.

Design/Performance Advantages

A rectangular batten shape prevents point-loading and provides greater impact resistance than does the round shape.

A full-length taper provides the correct curvature for battens, which can be matched with laminate thickness to meet any stiffness specification.

Hollow battens, created using the mandrel-wrapped production system, can be manufactured to be lighter than solid battens.

ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY

C-Tech uses a mandrel-wrapped production system to manufacture C-Tech SailBattens. Purpose-built machinery and mandrels of varying sizes and tapers are used to create the hollow, rectangular shape, which is unique to C-Tech SailBattens.

Battens are designed with the most effective balance of fibre orientation and placement.

The result? Optimum stiffness, compression strength and shear resistance.

Custom-designed software allows laminate layers to be adjusted to tailor stiffness and draft position to meet specific sail requirements.

QUALITY CERTAINTY

Bend tests are performed on all C-Tech SailBattens to ensure correct camber and shape profiles are achieved. Results are checked against computer design specifications to ensure a quality product.Laminate construction and bend test detail is stored in C-Tech’s secure database. Each C-Tech SailBatten has a barcode so individual battens can be identified. This enables battens to be reproduced to the same specifications or tweaked for the next set in a development programme.

PERFECT FIT

The overall stiffness of each batten is represented by an Average EI, calculated from the three-point bend test as shown above. Bend test results are retained confidentially and can be supplied to the appropriate sail designers on request.

Using the C-Tech SailBattens software, a set of battens can be custom-designed to meet specifications supplied by a sailmaker or match outputs from sail design software. If design specs are not available, C-Tech staff can draw also on the wide range of information stored in the C-Tech SailBattens database to manufacture the correct set of sail battens for a particular yacht design or type of sailing.

Accurate information on batten size, weight and stiffness can be provided once batten design is complete.

ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY

C-Tech sustains a continual R&D programme to refine existing composite products, introduce new materials and develop new product breakthroughs for customers.

C-Tech believes in performance with durability and that is why we are the only company that manufactures solid plate battens the way we do.

C-Tech PlateBattens are designed using custom software, which allows laminate layers to be adjusted to tailor stiffness and draft position for sail requirements.

Laminates are tapered during production; therefore, C-Tech PlateBattens do not need grinding. The continuous layers of fibre on the outside of the batten make C-Tech PlateBattens stronger and remove the risk of delamination or splintering.

Rather than grinding parallel sections to produce taper for leech battens, C-Tech’s unique manufacturing process blends fibre from carbon at the leech to S-glass at the tip. This produces strong flexible tips without extra weight.

Full-length and leech C-Tech PlateBattens can be distinguished by the surface finish:

Full-length battens have cloth outside layers.

Leech battens have S-glass outside layers.

TRIMMING INSTRUCTIONSC-Tech PlateBattens should always be trimmed from the leech end to maintain consistent draft position.

How to Order C-Tech PlateBattens

THERE ARE THREE METHODS YOU CAN USE TO SPECIFY C-TECH PLATEBATTENS: 1. Convert from existing battens to C-Tech PlateBattens using conversion charts. If you are currently using a batten with a known EI value, you can specify a C-Tech PlateBatten with the closest EI. Conversion charts and five point EI tables are published at http://sailbattens.com/bat_ctp.htm for the complete range of full length and leech battens.

2. Request C-Tech PlateBattens for a new sail based on C-Tech standard sets. Our sales team can specify a set of C-Tech PlateBattens for a given yacht type using our experience and database of previously supplied boats.

3. Bend test existing battens to calculate EI value.Measure the stiffness (EI) of your existing battens using the method detailed on page 8. We strongly recommend to only bend test the back half of the batten to ensure the taper does not influence the results. Use a weight that will deflect the batten to approximately 10% camber. Once the EI values have been established you will have a reference point to specify C-Tech PlateBattens from the tables. For full five point EI tables of the C-Tech PlateBatten range go to http://sailbattens.com/bat_ctp.htm

NOTE: The EI values in the specification tables (page 14-15) refer to the stiffness (measured in Nm2) at the leech end of the batten excluding taper.

C-TECH CATALOGUE (ISSUE 3) – PAGE 17

Whether your boat is in racing or cruising mode, C-Tech FlexiFurl horizontal battens offer the perfect means of achieving a rapid and efficient headsail furl.

Their performance has been proven with race results and extensive feedback over three years. Designed and manufactured in-house at C-Tech, the FlexiFurl’s curved profile strips compress flat when furling then spring back to their designed flying shape.

In the unlikely event of a C-Tech FlexiFurl batten breaking, it will not cause damage to the sail, thanks to its design.

The battens are supplied in standard lengths to ensure they are easy to fit (see specs on page 19).

C-Tech FlexiFurl are designed for:Yachts 25ft – 60ft: 50mm Yachts 50 – 85ft: 75mm Yachts 80ft+: 95mm

PAGE 18 – C-TECH CATALOGUE (ISSUE 3)

TAPERED OPTIONS There are two standard taper options that can be applied to any of the standard FlexiFurl battens.

66% Taper (T) – More camber before kinking

Mostly used for top battens in the deeper section of the sail where more camber is required before the batten kinks. The back third of the batten is the same stiffness as is specified for the parallel batten code; however, the overall stiffness of the batten is reduced by approximately 60%. We recommend accounting for this by specifying a code stiffer than that required before the taper is applied. Approximate draft position is 35%.

25% Taper (TS) – Suitable for small cables

Mostly used in leech applications when the batten is close to the luff or furling around a small cable. The tapered tip helps the FlexiFurl start furling around the cable/foil; this results in a tighter furl. The back ¾ of the batten is the same stiffness as is the parallel batten code; however, the overall stiffness of the batten is reduced by approximately 15%.

Our sales team can help you specify the most suitable FlexiFurls for your application.

FURLING AROUND HEAD FOILS/CABLES There are a number of factors that come into play when furling FlexiFurls around a head foil or cable. Each case is different and depends on the cable diameter, sail weight, sail size, batten angle and furling system (top down or bottom up). Please contact C-Tech for special requirements.

As a general guide:

50mm FlexiFurl range Approx furl diameter: 40mm

75mm FlexiFurl range Approx furl diameter: 80mm

95mm FlexiFurl range Approx furl diameter: 100mm

MORE ROACH FlexiFurls have a higher ability to take compression (when compared to airbattens) and can, therefore, support more roach.

FULL LENGTH TOP BATTENSCareful considerations need to be taken when specifying these battens. If the sail has too much camber the batten will ‘kink’ before full depth is reached. A custom taper is normally shaped into the batten to ensure the batten sets correctly. To do this we need the design depth % of the sail.

ORDERINGTo make the ordering and specification process easier please provide the following information when requesting a quote:• Boat size and design• Sail type• Photo/Image of the sail• Number and length of battens required • Head foil/cable diameter

CUSTOMISATIONAlso, we can customise standard FlexiFurls with non-standard lengths and tapered versions.

CT22 Leech Tensioners

The FTLTL22 is light-weight, low profile and easy to use. A double acting adjusting screw connects the acetal leech end-plug and handle. A hex key is used to make the adjustment. Popular on class 40’s and mainsail leech battens. THLP’s sold separately.

The RSLT is a light-weight, low profile tensioning solution for CT22 battens and is more robust than the FTLTL22 tensioner. A hex key screw is used to adjust an internal acetal pusher to apply tension. A range of standard sizes below ensures a close fit to minimise bulk at the leech. Popular on Fast 40’s, TP52’s and other full length CT22 battens.

The DSLP is a lashing style end plug that is basic and robust. They are manufactured from tough acetal plastic and come in various sizes to fit the full C-Tech Sailbatten range. Plugs may be filed to fit the batten internal profile.

The DSLCC is our most robust option for lash in batten ends on CT22 battens. These are suited for backfilled jib battens that make contact with the rig. Custom sizes can be made to ensure a close fit for maximum strength and to minimise bulk at the leech.

The THLP comes in different sizes to fit the internal dimensions of the batten. Plugs may be filed to fit the batten. Used with FTLTL22’s.

The CCLR has been designed specifically for use with a bolt-rope mainsail. Racing classes like RC44, Fast 40 and TP52 use CCLR hardware. A plastic insert fits inside the batten pocket with external carbon shells clamping the assembly to hold the batten firmly in place. The bolt rope is sewn in place onto the plastic insert and sail. 2019 improvements include a shortened length to reduce weight and the change to flush M6 fastenings to reduce the risk of rig damage. There are 4 standard options for Non-Adjusting CCLR’s.

The bolt rope is sewn in place onto the plastic insert and sail. 2019 improvements include the change to flush M6 fastenings to reduce the risk of rig damage. There are 3 standard options for Adjusting CCLR’s.

C-Tech and Harken have developed a new style stud and receptacle design that is more robust than the traditional system. It features an extended stud shoulder with a clearance fit so that the bending moment is moved away from the thread root diameter. The design also ensures the load is consistent regardless of receptacle rotation, especially on upper battens where receptacles rotate on the studs through tacks and gybes. Only C-Tech receptacles are compatible with both high-load and standard Harken studs.

We recommend you contact C-Tech before ordering the new Harken system to ensure compatibility.

A THLP Sleeve is used when the batten internal dimensions are too small to fit the standard threaded leech plug. The THLP Sleeve slips over the outside of the batten and is mostly used on battens shorter than 2m. These are custom made to fit.

The NTLR36T is our strongest CT36 receptacle. The titanium head and fasteners will not corrode on carbon sails. This receptacle can be centre or side mounted.

The NALR is a tough, simple and durable batten receptacle. The NALR is side mounted and attaches through the sail with titanium bolts.

The FCLR is a tough, simple and durable batten receptacle designed to work with in-boom furling main sails. It is lashed to the sail and can withstand high crushing forces whilst protecting the batten. Available tapped for metric stud or bored for sliding spigot.

The ATLR36T has a titanium head and fasteners will not corrode on carbon sails. A spanner is used to make the adjustment. This receptacle can be centre or side mounted.

Carbon Rings

Clew Boards

Spinnaker Sheet Catchers (Mouse Traps)

Originally developed for the RC44 class spinnaker corner rings where titanium is banned. These rings are constructed from a single tow of carbon fibre and have a 3,200kg breaking load.

Our unique Load Path Laminate (LPL) construction method maximises strength to weight unlike any other product on the market. This enables us to easily custom-build and fit any geometry in a short time frame. The LPL construction method ties the load directly from the attachment points to the webbing.

Using unique carbon /S-glass construction, spinnaker sheet catchers can be crushed or bent and will return to original shape as tested with TP52 through to J-Class yachts. These are sold individually so two units are required per sail. Finishing details are still under development.
