In1801,theMoravianssentmissionariestoworkamongtheCherokeeatSpringplaceMissioninnorthGeorgia.WhentheU.S.governmentorderedtheCherokeefromtheirhomeinGeorgiatoOklahoma,theMoravianmissionariesfoughtthemove.Whentheywereoverruled,themissionariesrefusedtotravelwiththeCherokeeonwhathasbecomeknownastheTrailofTearsbecausetheyfeltthatmeanttheyapprovedoftheplan.InsteadtheywenttoOklahomaaheadoftheCherokee,andestablishedamissiontheycalledNewSpringplace.TheMoravianskeptdiligentrecordsoftheirmissionaryworkwithCherokees.Dr.CrewshastranslatedthearchaicGermanscriptintoEnglishsothatwemayhaveanaccountofthishistory.TheserecordsconstitutetheonlyknownaccountofdailylifeintheCherokeenation.
