LOCATION AND SUPPLIES Nowra is the closest major town which stocks all fuels, groceries and both mechanical and tyre repairs. YALWAL NSW ADVENTURE GUIDE MAJOR ATTRACTIONS 4WDING – Without a doubt, the Yalwal region of NSW is renowned for its challenging 4WD tracks. From warm-up stages such as Deans Gap and Mintbush Firetrail before moving on to classics like Monkey Gum and Six Stage, there is something for everyone out this way. FISHING – The Danjera Dam which is fed by the mighty Shoalhaven River is home to some world class bass fishing. Motor boats are not allowed so this is electric or paddle power only. MINES – Gold was first discovered in Yalwal in 1852 and mining has been a part of the area’s history ever since. Today you can grab a torch and camera and descend down into old mine shafts – just watch for the resident bats. LOOKOUTS – Several classic lookouts exist but the single best is that which is found at the very top of Monkey Gum. Look to your right once you come through the rocky gorge – the lookout is above the old wooden ladder against the rocks. If you’re looking for a dedicated 4WD playground it’s hard to go past Yalwal on NSW’s south coast. With tonnes of tracks ranging from beginner to ‘no way that’s drivable’ Yalwal will have you coming back time and time again. Many of the tracks that are mild in dry conditions will become insane during a solid rain – be prepared for this at all times during winter. The warmer months allow greater freedom of movement and of course temps are far more agreeable. Bass fishing is also much improved on those stinking hot summer evenings. 4WD GEAR AND TIPS Yalwal is a maze of major roads, minor tracks and goats trails that criss-cross each other at varying and random intervals. It’s one of those locations where becoming geographically embarrassed is a real possibility. Quality GPS or mapping solutions will make navigation far easier and are highly recommended. Those wanting to test themselves and their rigs on the more notorious tracks in the region will need to come prepared – both mechani- cally and personally. Yalwal’s tougher tracks are no place for those starting out in the world of 4WDing, however for those with some time behind the stubby lever, it’s paradise. Quality mud terrain tyres and adequate clearance are essential for any 4WD. At least one but better two locking diffs will keep tracks in reasonable condition and decrease the chance of mechanical failure. A winch is also considered mandatory as despite the best preparation, you’ll definitely get stuck a few times on these awesome tracks. If venturing out during winter, you will encounter river crossings, some deep – to that end, adequate engine protection by way of a snorkel is cheap insurance. Close proximity to Nowra and short tracks means you need not be concerned with fuel range nor water carrying capacity, however do be prepared to use more fuel than usual when in low range for extended periods. It is worth noting that despite your proximity to civilisation, mobile phones do not work for most of the Yalwal region – only sporadic and unreliable service can be had at the tops of some hills.
