21st Century CLC Grants Awarded
Posted by sde on Aug 09, 2012The Oklahoma State Department of Education recentlyannounced nine recipients for 21st Century CommunityLearning Center (21st CCLC) grants for the 2012-13 schoolyear, bringing the total number of current grantees in the stateto 71.
“These centers are crucial to giving students additional learningopportunities and resources outside of the normal school day,particularly for those students who are at highest risk,” saidState Superintendent of Public Instruction Janet Barresi. “Aswe work to make sure that each child in our state is reading ator beyond grade level and excelling in core subjects such asmath, history and science, we must embrace such relationshipswith our community partners. I’m thrilled that these providerswere awarded these grant funds so they can help make animpact in the lives of Oklahoma students.”
The purpose of the 21st Century Community Learning Centerprogram is to provide learning opportunities and enrichmentactivities that will complement the regular academic programof K-12 students. The program is authorized under Title IV,Part B, of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act.
The program’s specific purpose is to offer assistance to studentsin meeting state and local performance standards in coreacademic subjects, including tutorial services, particularly forstudents in high poverty areas and low-performing schools. Theprogram offers opportunities for literacy training and relatededucation development for families of students and help forworking parents by providing a safe environment for studentswhen school is not in session. The learning centers also offeradditional services such as youth development; drug andviolence prevention; counseling; art, music, technology andservice learning; as well as character, physical and wellnesseducation.
There were 68 grant applicants in Oklahoma this year and ninegrants awarded. Each grantee received between $50,000 and$300,000 based on the number of students served. A total of$1,801,538 was awarded this year to new grantees, out of afive-year total of $7,959,624, the balance of which willcontinue funding existing grantees.
