Friday 3rd November

Head’s Message . . . Welcome this edition of the Phoenix Flier which gives you a flavour of the events over recent weeks at the Prep School. On our return after the half term break we have resumed our careful and considered examination of our School Values in assemblies and PSHE. The theme this week has been: respect - what does it means and how we can show it? We have looked at respect being a sense of admiration for others for their abilities, talents or achievements and also the idea that respect is about showing due regard for others feelings, wishes or rights. We have reflected on the ‘unsung heroes’ of our school in the Estates, Administrative and Catering departments who ensure that the school keeps running and who fix issues that we never even know about! We agreed that we can show our respect with a cheery smile and earnest thanks. Please do follow this up at home. Reports are due out next week and on the horizon soon after are our Parents’ Evenings for this term, for which a letter will follow shortly. As always we look forward to celebrating every child’s progress and discussing what further gains can be realised going forward. It is hugely important to us that we work in collaboration with the entire school community and provide open and honest feedback at all times. One of the most exciting things you can be asked to do as a musician is to attend a masterclass. Arranged for promising and talented musicians, these give young people an opportunity to learn from the very best in their field; Nicola Benedetti on the violin, perhaps, or Wissam Boustany on the flute. Professional musicians feel passionately about the importance of passing on their expertise to those who are learning. We were, therefore, very proud to hear that Tilly Gilraine had been accepted onto a Harp masterclass with Eira Lynn Jones, Head of Harp at the Royal Northern College of Music. Her account is below.

At the weekend I went to the Saltaire Camac Harp Festival. I had a masterclass with Eira Lynn Jones. I really enjoyed it and was inspired by how she played. Eira showed me lots of different techniques that made it a lot easier to play! At the weekend, I also took part in a workshop. I played two different types of music, celtic and jazz. We played in 2 different groups and I met three other teachers. While I was there, we serviced my harp and I was allowed to swap my harp with another. I swapped it with a lighter colour. I had a really fun time at the festival and hope to do it again.

The Prep School dancers worked extremely hard at the JK Dance Workshop over the half term. They learnt complex dance choreography to a song from Matilda the Musical 'Revolting Children'. The pupils created their own school themed freezes and really got into the character of naughty school children. The workshop ended with a small performance to family and friends. All choreography will feature in the Dance Showcase 2018. Well done to all Yarm School dancers who took part in the workshop!

Gary Northfield Author Visit

The children from Year 3 and 4 were delighted by the opportunity to hear Gary

Northfield, author of ‘Julius Zebra’ and ‘Derek the Sheep’, present his latest book. The

children listened in awe as he read an extract about the latest escapades of Julius

Zebra and his band of followers. They were treated with the creation of their own

character and brought him to life through Gary’s creative skills. Listening to the

children after the visit, it is clear that he has sparked a creative interest in comic strip

writing and I hope to see some of our their own creations soon.

Rugby

The U9A and U10A boys travelled to Bradford Grammar School to take part in their largest rugby festival to date. Both teams took on 6 different schools and in turn played some entertaining rugby, as well as coming away with a number of valuable experiences, that can be taken into their upcoming fixtures. As always the boys showed impeccable attitude and manners and were a delight to take away.

I took part in the rugby tournament at Bradford. Harrry and Jake were the team captains. We tried our best. We lost every game apart from one which we drew. We still enjoyed it, we never gave up!

At the Bradford Rugby Festival, the U10’s worked extremely hard and scored many tries. The team all enjoyed the trip and worked well as a team.

Hockey

The U11A squad had a very busy week before half term. They took on two big tournaments the first of which was the HMC at GSAL where we got through the quarter finals but although we played the ball beautifully around the pitch and our defence was excellent, we couldn’t score any goals. We then went to Repton for the IAPS regional where we enjoyed playing lots of games with new opposition. Again, we played well with some excellent passing and movement around the pitch but we failed to put the ball over the line. We came away with our heads held high and lots to improve on.

Miss L Routledge

On the last Friday before half term Mrs Jennings and Miss Bradley took two excited teams to a hockey festival in Bradford. The weather was cold but this did not dampen the playing and the efforts of the girls in the U9 and U10 teams. For the U9's it was their first experience in a sporting festival and they upheld our school values and were a credit to the school. It was a pleasure to take all the girls and they played well.

I took part in the Bradford Hockey Tournament. Summer and Poppy were the team captains. They did a great job. Grace, Summer and I scored some goals. The tournament was a great experience. Thank you to the staff that took us to the tournament.

I really enjoyed the U10’s fixture at Bradford. We loved playing the hockey. We scored goals and we all helped to defend. It was a very enjoyable day.

A Visit To The Centre For Life " I enjoyed the Curiosity Zone most of all. Hadi and I investigated what happens to a ball when it comes into contact with hot air" Morrison, 3J

"It was good and there were lots of activities to do and you couldn't be bored. My favourite part was the 4D motion ride because it was scary and fun at the same time." Sanju, 3J

" I loved the Curiosity Zone because I liked touching the ice and building the sandcastles." Ada, 3J

"I had an inspirational visit and I learned how to put a cast on a broken bone, looked at x-rays and cleaned some giant plastic teeth.". Sofia, 3J

I liked the Curiosity Zone because there were many activities but I particularly liked playing the marble run activity" Sam, 3J

“I enjoyed working in the Science Lab. I liked the activities and I felt like a real scientist." Ava, 3J

" I particularly enjoyed the Science Lab when we made scabs with chemicals and fixed a broken bone." Hadi, 3J

“ I really enjoyed the Science Magic Show because the scientist didn't speak he mimed what he was doing" Spencer 3J

“I enjoyed the Brain Zone and using my memory. I also liked the Curiosity Zone and I found out that scabs are good because they stop germs getting into your body" Kabir, 3J

Autumn Holiday School 2017 As always the Autumn Holiday School was very well attended and action packed. Under an apocalypse zombie red sky (caused by storm Ophelia blowing Sahara desert dust and Iberian fire ash across Britain), Monday was spent bowling at Hollywood Bowl and making fabulous name-boards for bedroom doors. As the remains of storm Ophelia raced across the north-east of Britain, Tuesday was spent indoors at ROF 59 bouncing on the trampolines, scaling great heights on the climbing walls and playing ‘capture the flag’ with laser guns! After being dazzled by Liz Million’s amazing Halloween themed pictures and being inspired to draw our own, for some the highlight of the day was undoubtedly going to Northallerton’s Pizza Express to design and make our very own pizzas (which made a perfect tea that evening!). After exhausting ourselves on Thursday morning swimming at Darlington’s Dolphin Centre, we had just enough energy left to build dens and explore the Senior School Woods and later cook bread and marshmallows on the open campfire - or take shelter from the relent-less pouring rain to sculpt ‘Bogart’ in the Yurt! Friday was a more relaxing affair. We watched the latest Lego movie at Richmond’s Station Cinema and then took part in ‘It’s a Knockout’ - testing ourselves with a multitude of crazy challenges from scooter races to lobbing a wellie. Great fun was had by all.
