Definition

Count: According to the Textile Institute “Count is a number of indicating the mass per unit length or length per unit mass of yarn”.

Yarn Count: is defined as the weight per unit length of the yarn or the length per unit weight.

2

There are several count system of yarn. These count systems have been divided in two ways. One is Direct System where length is fixed and another is Indirect system where weight is fixed.

Direct System Indirect system

3

The weight of a fixed length of yarn is determined. The weight per unit length is the yarn count.The following formula is used to calculate Direct count:

N= (W×l) / L

Where,  N =Yarn count, W =Weight of the sample,

L=Length of the sample l=Unit of length of the sample

5

The length of a fixed weight of yarn is measured. The length per unit weight is the yarn count.

The following formula is used to calculate Indirect count:

N = (L×w) / W×l

Where, N =Yarn count, W =Weight of the sample, L=Length of the sample l=Unit of length of the sample w = Unit of weight of the sample.

Some Direct Formulas:Ne = 5315/D = 590.6/TNm = 1.69 NeDenier = 9 Tex

The amount of twist is an important factor. It determines the appearance as well as the

durability and serviceability of a resulting fabric Fine yarns require more twist than coarse yarns. Warp yarns, which are used for the lengthwise

threads in woven fabrics, are given more twist than are filling yarns, which are used for the crosswise threads.

8

To retain the twist in the yarns and prevent any tendency to untwist or kink, the yarns are given a twist-setting finish with heat or moisture

The direction of twist may be observed by holding the yarn in a vertical position. If the spirals conform to the direction of the slope of the central part of the letter S, the yarn has an S twist; if they conform to the slope of the letter Z, the yarn has a Z twist.

9

The number of twists per inch can, in Plied yarns, be determined by counting the number of bumps in one inch, and divide by the number of singles

10

for example, In this yarn the number of twists per inch would be 6 divided by 2 that is 3
