Happy New Year Hoggies,

Normally I tend to waffle a bit – but this time there is too much to say so I’ll just get into it:

• What a great few months we’ve had at YVCH with Xmas parties, an amazing number ofgreat rides, a fantastic Inter-chapter ride and a long-weekend away at Dee’s farm.

• If you haven’t done an over-nighter …just do it!!! They are a fantastic opportunity to get toknow the members and find out those who really come out of their shells after a few‘sherbets’ (you know who you are:)

• The Victorian HOG Rally is coming-up fast (March 10th – 13th) so make sure you’veregistered as it really is a case of ‘more-the-merrier’

• Don’t forget that you can get your Harley insurance cheaper by going through HarleyHeaven when it is time to renew – just ask Michael (Harley Heaven Finance Manager) thequestion!

• Our new Website is up and running – check it out!!! Congratulations to our WebmasterMaree Pearce on a fantastic job.

• The 2017 Committee has hit the ground running and it looks like another great year to be amember of YVCH – stay tuned for more awesome events and lots of great rides.

Hi all,

Would just like to take a moment to introduce myself and look at the year ahead.

I have been a member of Yarra Valley hog since December 2011 - so I am at my 5 yearanniversary.

I first joined the committee in 2011 as the Historian. This provided me many insights intothe formation of the club and the workings of a volunteer committee team. When theTreasurer at the time moved to Queensland I jumped into that role for 18 months. It taughtme many lessons.

I am honoured and thrilled to be taking on the role as Director.

I intend to build and improve on the great achievements of the last few years and thankthose who have worked hard for us to be where we are today as Chapter of the year. Someof the committee are leaving their current roles and I wish to thank them for the servicethey have given us.

I welcome the new 2017 team and am very pleased that it still includes some of the previousexperienced and wise 2016 team.

It is easy to get on with every one when you never disagree, but I know at times we will. Iask that you give me your support, and I will in turn work to ensure I listen and adapt to theneeds of the club.

We enter 2017 as a strong positive and proud Chapter. Success for me is to be saying wefeel the same in a years time.

Liam

Hello,

I have been a member of Yarra Valley Hog since 2013 when I received a membership withthe purchase of my new 2013 Harley Wide Glide. Motorbikes had been a huge part of my lifesince I was 12, when I purchased my first motorbike, a Honda 55 step thru. However, due toraising a family with my wife Cathy, who is also a YVH member, my dream of owning a Harleywas financially out of reach for a while. Whenever I was in Ringwood I would always visit theprevious Harley Heaven shop and marvel at the bikes, impressed by the chrome and qualitypaint. I think there is still a wear mark in the glass at the front of the Ringwood HarleyHeaven from where my nose rubbed the glass admiring these machines.

After purchasing the Wide Glide I was riding with another club. However, this proved to belargely male dominated and little thought was given to involving our partners. I was lookingfor something more and initially went on a few rides to try what this HOG thing was allabout. I was immediately made welcome by Yogi who was the Director at the time and Bruceand Sandra Thorn were also were very welcoming. I was impressed by the number of womenmembers at Yarra Valley Hog and introduced my wife Cathy, who quickly made friends andthe rest is history.

My main role as Assistant Director is to promote the HOG experience …support the Director(which reading between the lines means I have to do all the jobs that Liam doesn’t want todo:) and also support our sponsoring dealer. Thanks to the hard work of the previouscommittee the club was handed to the incoming committee in good shape. My goal is to keepthe club functioning well and pass the club to the next committee in as good as, or hopefullybetter shape. I am also want to encourage more women members to join, as I believe thatthe club will be a better club by being inclusive of all who love Harley Davidson Motorbikes.

Yours in ridingMark Drury.

Found this interesting article and thought I’d like to share it with you all.

Inter-vehicle ‘talk’ may benefit ridersPOSTED ON 9TH JANUARY, 2017 BY MARK HINCHLIFFE

America has mandated vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications technology in all new cars, but riders alsowant the technology to recognise motorcycles. The American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) says thetechnology can benefit all road users, but they demand to be included in the discussion, planning andimplementation of the policies and regulations governing the rollout.

It follows a crash in which a female motorcycle rider was rear-ended by an automated Tesla S under testin Norway. V2V and automated self-driving cars, trucks and even motorcycles are hurtling toward us at anaccelerating rate and authorities are struggling to control the development and implementation.

While some say the technologies are good for all motorists, there are serious concerns about theirdetection of motorcycles. BMW Motorrad spokesman Karl Viktor Schaller says autonomous vehicles willmake motorcycle riding safer. His company is also working with Honda and Yamaha to develope “connectedmotorcycles” with electronics that talk to each other and other vehicles to make them safer on the roads.

Motorcycles are now being considered in European driverless tests in the wake of the Norway crash, however the Australian Driverless Vehicle Initiative is yet to identify the dangers to riders.

In America, AMA spokesman Wayne Allard says they recognise the potential for improved safety asvehicles communicate. “But we want to ensure that the detection and response sensors and software candetect motorcyclists and respond appropriately,” he says.

The V2V technology, sanctioned by the US Department of Transportation and Federal HighwayAdministration, would also allow vehicles to “talk” to roadway infrastructure such as traffic lights, stopsigns and work zones to improve mobility, reduce congestion and improve safety.“This new technology could help motorcyclists immensely by alerting drivers of a rider’s presence as theyprepare to make a left turn or approach a motorcycle from the rear,” Wayne says.

However the AMA has the following concerns:

• Software and sensors must be designed to recognise motorcycles and respond appropriately.• Personal privacy must be protected.• The communications systems implemented, whether Wi-Fi or another technology, must be secure from

hackers.• The vehicle operator should have the option to turn off the signal to prevent unwanted tracking.• Motorcyclists wishing to keep track of the technology advances and their effect on riders can

subscribe to AMA Action Alerts.

Guess it does give us something to think about, just how SAFE are we with new technology?

Cheers & Stay upright - Kez

G’day to my fellow Yarra Valley HOGS,

My name is Damien “Damo” Baker and I am honoured to be appointed as the Chapters latest Historian. It’s a position that I have inherited with no instructions to follow and at the stage with no history. We have tracked down our Chapter records to the Harley Heaven Ringwood store where I’m sure they are safe and secure. By the time this goes to print I’m hoping that our records will be located and I can fulfil my role as custodian of our Chapters history.

If anyone has any old (pre 2016) newsletters, photos or items in print please consider sharing them with me. I can be contacted on email at [email protected] or phone/SMS 0401 760 476. I can scan and keep the digital copy getting originals back to you ASAP.In the meantime please enjoy this little snippet of 2013 that our Director Liam Harley provided to me.

“A historic moment - Conquering the Mountain. The Australia Day weekend Great Alpine Road trip of 2013 has been successful! After the Yarra Valley chapter expedition of 2012 was beaten back by torrential rain, which had also stopped the previous attempt. It was feared that this year’s adventurers would not even make the Bright Base camp because of the high country fires around Harrietville. Calls throughout the preceding week to the Bright Alpine Hotel confirmed that it was business as usual. So after last minute consultation with the latest weather, CFA & Vic road apps, the YVC exploration force met at Yarra Glen on the 26th January, the Road Captain Shane gave a stirring briefing that inspired his team to follow. He acknowledged Australia Day, provided directions and confirmed there would be coffee and cake stops. The road report advised that the Great Alpine road was closed at Harrietville the plan was to get to Bright and then re-assess. So at 9:30 20 bikes set off into the unknown. A full report will be provided, but highlights for me include, the Whitfield road, rafting in the river at Bright and the Falls Creek to Omeo road. Yes we conquered Falls Creek! Which leaves 2014 to beat the elusive mount Hotham. Liam”
