YASS HIGH SCHOOL W e v a l u e r e s p e c t , r e s p o n s i b i l i t y , s a f e t y a n d l e a r n i n g .
Principal: Linda Langton Deputy Principals: Andrew Facer & Ruth Riach
From the Principal
Professional networks and associations are an increasingly vital part of
every teacher’s ongoing development. The sharing of ideas, experience
and practice ensures that creativity and best practices flourish.
I attended the Secondary Principals Council conference last week with
colleagues from across the state representing a variety of schools. The
context of these schools varied considerably, but they were all dedicated
to providing the very best opportunities to all students.
Pasi Sahlberg (Professor of Education Policy and Research Director,
Gonski Institute, UNSW) and Adrian Piccoli (Professor of Practice and
Director of the Gonski Institute, UNSW) explored issues in education
around the world with a focus on what the education policy and
improvement landscape should look like in NSW.
Eddie Woo (NSW DoE Leader of Mathematics Growth) was as
engaging as he appears in his YouTube channel, Wootube. He
addressed the role of teachers in looking after students’ academic
growth, social development, psychological wellbeing and vocational
skills in the face of changes in pedagogy (how we teach), curriculum
(what we teach) and assessment (how well have we taught).
May Samali (Chief Operating Officer, High Resolves) is leading an
initiative to build a new technology platform and ecosystem for
citizenship education across Australia and the US. Yass HS will have
an opportunity to be involved in this exciting project from 2020.
Although it is always difficult being away from school, I have returned
full of possibilities…what if we…? how can we…? Education is ever-
evolving and rewarding for all as we embrace the present and dream for
the future.

From the Deputies
The construction of the new STEM building has begun with machinery arriving and
site safety fences in place. The increase in heavy vehicle traffic through the school
site poses some safety risks and some changes will occur to minimise the risk
associated with this including a reduction in the speed limit on school grounds to
10km/hr. This will apply to all vehicle traffic including staff, students, parents and
contractors. Temporary fences will also be placed along the road edge to control
pedestrian movements. Please be mindful of heavy vehicle traffic when moving
around the school grounds.
A large number of our students have selected a variety of school sports which have
a small financial cost associated with them, predominantly associated with venue
hire. Whilst the benefits of engaging in physical activity is well known, students need
to be aware of the costs of the activities they are selecting. A number of students
have selected sports with fees but have not paid these fees. For fee paying sports
to be able to continue to be offered to students we ask for any outstanding fees to
be paid in full. If you are unsure if your child has outstanding sports fees please
contact the school office to discuss.
Over the last weeks we have both attended a professional learning session based
around developing a whole school programing and assessment review to ensure
YHS compliance with NESA guidelines and expectations. We have since developed
a program to extend the English and PDHPE reviews conduct by previous Deputy
Principal Mrs Pinson and will review the Mathematics faculty next term. This program
will allow us to support the ongoing development of the teaching and learning cycle.

Captain’s Corner
Hey guys! Welcome to another Captains Corner! We hope everyone is working hard
on their assessments and enjoying the last few weeks of Term 2. The SRC is still
working hard on improving different aspects of the school, we are currently working
on implementing a recycling program, senior student and junior student mentoring
and having heaps of fun attending multiple leadership camps.
Our Teacher of the Week this week is Mr Szota. Mr Szota works extremely hard on
the InTouch each week and always reminds us to get our Captains Corners in on
time. He also recently spent 3 days in Sydney on a HSIE study excursion and spent
his time taking Year 11 and 12 students throughout Sydney and enhanced their
learning experience dramatically. Congratulations Mr Szota!
Next fortnight’s PBS focus will be around arriving and leaving school. This will
include where we can drop off and pick up, waiting for buses and walking to and
from school safely.

Congratulations to our amazing CHS gymnastic representatives, Lilli Gallahar,
Jacinta Bramley, Aimee Vitler, Imogen Schultz and Selene Hubber. They compete
at different levels, and have been selected in levels 3 and 5.
These five girls have been selected to compete at the NSWCHS gymnastics carnival
in Newcastle in early August! Thankyou coach Michelle Vitler for all the time and
work you put in with these talented students.

Year 12 HSIE Excursion to Sydney
Our annual HSIE excursion to Sydney took place on the 5-7th June. Students from
Year 12 Modern History, Year 12 Legal Studies and Year 11 Ancient History
travelled to Sydney to take part in a variety of activities.
Modern History students attended the History Teachers Association study day and
listened to two excellent lectures from historian and educator Ken Webb (who wrote
our Modern History textbook!).
Modern History and Legal Studies students visited the Sydney Jewish Museum and
met a survivor of the holocaust and
took a tour of the museum. Legal
Studies students also visited
Parramatta District court, observing
a bail hearing and drug court.
Ancient History students went to
Macquarie University to learn about
burial rites in Ancient Egypt. They
also conducted analysis of ancient
artifacts and discussed the nature of
ancient history.

Oliver Twist
This year our creative CAPA team have gifted us with another school musical:
Oliver!, starring an entourage of young talented students. Such as:
Poppy Jones as Oliver, an orphan boy and the main character of the play.
Max Delander as Bill Sikes, the main antagonist of the play and a horrid murdering
criminal.
Bronwyn Kemp as Nancy, a petty thief who eventually becomes a good friend to
Oliver and who is romantically involved with Bill Sikes.
D’Artagnen Lewis as Fagin, a criminal who makes money off of children that he
owns and cares little for their wellbeing.
Mitchell Reynish as the Artful Dodger, a member of the gang of child pickpockets
and one of Oliver’s closest friends.
The story follows Oliver, a boy who has seen nothing but misfortune from his life in
a workhouse until Mr Sowerberry, an undertaker, takes Oliver as his apprentice,
where his stories ensue.
8 -16
Trent Robinson, another bright and talented student at Yass High, asked Miss Moss some questions about the play: When are you expecting the musical to be shown? “Week 10, the 3rd, 4th and 6th of July” How have the cast and crew been so far? “They are very talkative, but really good dancers and singers” How much are the entry fees? “Adults are $20, students and pensioners are $10, and the family price is $50” And when are tickets available? “Tickets are available now, people can buy them at the front office”
Miss Moss also has plans to restart the Drama Club next term, so if you do want to be in a musical in the future then Drama Club would be a great place to start!

Indigenous Leadership Camp
Walanga Muru’s Rising Stars Leadership Camp is an all-inclusive three day

community.
Across the three days students will experience an extensive numbers of activities
that focus on building their leadership skills, Aboriginal Culture and providing them
with a taste of university life. There will also be a late afternoon/night excursion to
Sydney CBD. All attending students are expected to get involved in each activity
across the duration of the camp.
Students will be supervised by Walanga Muru staff throughout the entire duration of
the camp, with night staff staying within the NCIE Redfern accommodation each
night.
COST: The three day camp is run at no cost to the student or their school
DATES: Tuesday 17th - Thursday 19th September, 2019
LOCATION: Majority of activities will be held on Macquarie University’s North Ryde
Campus. Students will be staying at The National Centre of Indigenous Excellence
(NCIE), Redfern

Please see Ms Vale for more information.
National Consistent Collection of Data
Every year schools are required to complete a data collection, encompassing a wide
range of disabilities and/or learning difficulties, for students requiring adjustments in
the classroom or for assessment tasks. It includes students who experience anxiety
as well as those who have behaviour management issues.
The Learning and Support staff are currently working on collating this information.
The information collated is confidential and is also used by staff to ensure that
individual student needs are met. If you have any questions about the data
collection, please contact Mrs Margaret Mironov at Yass High on 62261711.

The RESPECT WHEEL
This term in Wellbeing we are
looking at RESPECT. Check
out the RESPECT BASICS
WHEEL and on a scale of 1-
10 use the wheel to rate
yourself on how well you're
doing at each RESPECT
BASIC today. Write your
rating next to each BASIC.
Now think about this...Which
RESPECT BASIC do you
want to improve the most?
What is one action you can
take to practice this
RESPECT BASIC more?
Drop Off Zone
A gentle reminder
that the area
between the Ag Plot
and the Bus Bay is a
no parking/no drop
off zone. 8:30 -
9:00am and 3:20 -
3:40pm are very
busy times with cars,
buses and students
all using the
entrance/exit to
arrive and leave the
school.
Please follow the
signs posted to make sure we all do our bit to keep our kids safe.

Binit Binit Writing Camp
For two chilly days, several Year 7 and 8
students flexed their creative muscles at
the Binit Binit Writing Camp. The
picturesque Warrambui Retreat and
Conference Centre was the perfect location
for students to demonstrate their talent and
interest in this year’s theme of poetry.
Students were entertained by local poets
Harry Laing and Robyn Sykes, who both
explored the power and performance of
poetry.
Whilst the purpose of the camp was to
focus on the writing process, many other
activities were also on offer such as Frisbee
golf, archery and cooking marshmallows over the fire. This is the third year in
which the camp has been successfully run and all students were in agreement that
everyone should attend.
Thank you to Mrs Barlow from Yass Public School for this fantastic opportunity.
