I hope that your family had an enjoyable and relaxing holiday. A special welcome to the new families who have enrolled their children at our school. The teachers have been busy over the holidays and in the first week, working hard to plan creative, engaging and rewarding learning experiences which meet the students’ learning needs, challenge their thinking and support their wellbeing. It’s going to be another great year of learning at Yates Avenue! Air Conditioning Over the holidays, we had brand new air conditioning units installed into all classrooms, just in time for the hot weather we’ve experienced in the first week. Our students will now work in an environment conducive to learning all day, and hopefully not come home so tired and cranky on a hot day! 2017 Classes At the moment, the situation with student numbers is quite uncertain. We have had quite a few families leave our school over the school holidays. As a result, we will continue in 2016 classes until the end of this week and hopefully form 2017 classes next Monday, 6 th February. If you know of anyone who has moved into our catchment area and is looking to enrol their child into our school, please suggest that they do so ASAP to help with the planning process. I apologies for this inconvenience and will keep you updated through the newsletter with any changes. School Development Day Last Friday, 30 th January the staff participated in a School Development Day focused on the 2015-2017 School Plan, History, Science and Child Protection mandatory training. Many of the initiatives this year from our school plan will be focused on evidence-based teaching practices which are specifically designed to further improve the students learning needs in reading and writing. I will keep you updated on the impact of these projects throughout the year. Term 1 Calendar Accompanying this newsletter is a copy of the Term 1 school calendar. Please keep this visible at home and check the newsletter for updates and confirmation of school events, in case of any changes. Skoolbag App Late last year we purchased a new school app – ‘Skoolbag’ – to further improve communication between home and school. This app will allow us to update you on school events by sending reminder alerts straight to your phone. The newsletter and all permission notes can also be accessed via ‘Skoolbag’. To download, simply go to the ‘App Store’ or ‘Play Store’, type in the school name and install. Click on ‘Push Notifications’ to receive updates immediately Term 1 Invoice Invoices will be sent home today with the newsletter. It is very important that we receive payment from all families, as the money is needed to help support our students’ learning and wellbeing. The last day for payment is Friday, 3 rd March. If possible, please pay online via our school website using the Parent Online Payment (POP) option. Have a great week David MacSporran Principal Excellence, Opportunity, Success Page 1

Dental Checks This term, we will be collaborating with Smiles Onsite to promote healthier, happier smiles at our school! This service is offered for FREE under the federal government’s Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS), and comes along with the chance to win some amazing prizes! Smiles Onsite is a mobile dental clinic, which travels in a van similar to the Healthy Harold van.

Accompanying this newsletter is a covering letter and consent form. Only those students who have returned their completed form may participate in this initiative and go into the draw to win a prize. The mobile dental clinic will be operating in our school from 20th-24th February (Week 5).
