DESCRIPTION
YOU CAN WATCH THIS PRESENTATION IN MUSIC HERE (You have a link on the first slide): http://www.authorstream.com/Presentation/michaelasanda-1371522-yazd2/Thank you!The existence of special ventilation structures, called Badgirs, on the roofs is a distinctive feature of the architecture of this city (A Badgir is a high structure on the roof under which, in the interior of the building, there is a small pool). All about the simplest towers, which ranges from standard two-sided models to more elaborate six-sided variety, consist of at least for parts : the body or trunk that contains the shafts; air shelves that are used to catch some of the hot air and prevent it from entering the house; flaps which redirect the circulation of the wind; and the rood covering. The currents that enter the house do so above a pool of cool water, thereby cooling the air, while the warm air continues its circular path, redirected upward through a different shaft. If you stand directly beneath a badgir, the air is appreciably cooler, and while not quite as cold as modern air-con, it's a whole lot healthier.TRANSCRIPT

Yazd was visited by Marco Polo in 1272, who described it as a good and noble city and remarked its silk production. Isolated from any approach by a huge tract of monotonous desert, the vibrancy of Yard is invariably a surprise.
Recognized by UNESCO as holding one of the oldest architecture all over the world

The word Yazd means feast and worship. The city of Yazd has resisted the modern urbanization changes and maintained its traditional structure.

In the old city of Yazd, according to the UNESCO one of the oldest towns on earth, almost everything is made from sun-dried mud bricks, and the resulting brown skyline is dominated by the tall badgirs (windcatchers) on almost every rooftop.

The geographical features of this region have made people developed special architectural styles.

For this reason, in the older part of the city most houses are built of mud-bricks and have domed roofs. These materials served as insulation preventing heat from passing through.

Any summer visitor to Yazd can hardly fail to appreciate the needed for cool air and for the proliferation of badgirs (windtowers), constructed to fulfil the need.

These ancient systems of natural air-conditioning, which can also seen in the towns and villages of the Persian Gulf coast, are designed to catch even the lightest breeze and direct it to the rooms below.
