THE PROBLEM Ybor is constantly being deaced by grati and tagging. When you walk to a restaurant on

7th ave, you shouldn’t have to see someone’s name sprayed on the side o the buildings. A

lot o people don’t know but, the renters have to pay the city to have it removed and i they

don’t pay then the owners have to come out o pocket or the property damage. Some o

this art work can and should be displayed in the galleries in Ybor. There are over 10 dierent

art galleries and spaces with over 20 dierent artist that love what they do and do it in doors.

The reason why some o these artists tag on walls and property is because they don’t havesome where they can go and let their creativity run wild. The City o Ybor isn’t reaching out

to this younger crowd and it’s a way we can clean up the streets while encouraging the arts

through this target audience. With the younger audience most o their time is spent on the

computer trying to nd something to do. With all the art spaces and galleries we have in Ybor

we should encourage our youth to be more involved.

THE SOLUTION

By introducing a mural project throughout the city this will bring back the arts and restore itsheritage through the arts and youth. The murals will consist o historic sites and images o Ybor

some past and some present. We will search through Ybor or the dead spots and places where

artwork can be implemented. From there we can start to think about what ideally be the best

kind o artwork or the mural. We can keep the cost down on this project with a simple process

o wheat pasting. This will allow us to transer the pictures to any surace and wall.

The murals will be temporary not permanent. This will encourage the artist join a program like

this and donate their time to being productive and not tagging up the streets. There are a ew

galleries in Ybor that have open space where someone can lay down a canvas and paint. With

the conjunction o these galleries and artist this could be a great turn out. You will quickly see

how much grati will be o the streets.

MARKETING & DELIVERABLES:

Introduce a new marketing campaign with 4.5x 4.5 stickers and blog. The blog willbe in conjunction with the Ybor retail committee and galleries and art shops/venues.

Contacting the galleries and spaces in Ybor and grabbing inormation about their

events, the blog will have those updates on art classes, art contests, shows, gallery

events and anything art related in Ybor. The blog will also have links to their web

page i they have one or ino about the company and contact ino. This will be only art

related ideally or the young adult.

The stickers will be posted all over Ybor rom 7th ave.

to 14th ave. The stickers will be strategically placed

besides and under the grati and “tags” so when you

see the tags you will immediately noticed the sticker

and ino. The “tags” are usually done with markers or

pens. It’s typically an artist promoting his or hersel as

saying “I’ve been here”. The stickers will have a small

message and contact ino to the blog and website. The

message would say something like “wanna know where

you can do this LEGALLY without getting in CAUGHT?”or “do you wanna know how you can do this and get

PAID?”(Something like that). Playing o o the thrill o

tagging it but tempting them to nd out how it could be done with being hassled or

making a ew dollars or you work. This will orce them to go to the website and learn

that its galleries and studios in Ybor that you can be a part o without deacing Ybor’s

property. With the web presence o a blog we can monitor how many people have

actually has an event and commented on and we can also check and see how many

people have visited the site.

ANALYSIS OF PROJECTStrengths: This project will bring the artist

around Ybor together and eliminate the dead

space throughout the community. The murals

will also bring another attraction to Ybor like

the pianos we need to keep bring the arts

back to the streets.

Weakness: Not enough space or artist to

express themselves in this outside atmosphere.

Some artist may think that it’s OK to just start

painting on the mural instead o contacting the

proper person so that they can be apart o it.

Opportunities: This will give a chance or the

local artist to express themselves in a positive

way. This will give recognition to the city, the

artist and the community as a whole.

Threats: The main threat will be the hassle o

cops and city workers who aren’t amiliar with

what’s going on and may try and cause some

trouble to the process.

PRIMARY & SECONDARYAUDIENCE Ybor artists and visitors; 16-30; the creative

FIELD AND LOCATIONRESEARCHThese are just a ew o the places that would ideally

work or the murals. These place would be seen by

all types o travelers especially drivers throughout

Ybor. Hal o these places are in ront o stop lights

and stop signs. Also these places have been what

I consider to be called “dead spot”. This is where

taggers, concert posters, waste, and space that

could be used by the city or something attractive.

The rst spot I want to tackle is the space on

19th and 7th. This is located in between Temple

nightclub and an Art gallery. This brown wall is

a large space that is perect because it’s a high

trac area. It is located in a 30 t radius o 3 clubs

2 restaurants. On lookers be amazed at what’s

going on because to my recollection Ybor hasn’thad any type o outside murals that was displayed

throughout the city.

IDEAS AND FOLLOW-UPSSetting up cameras to lm the live painting and construction

o the project will show the process the artist must go through.

This will also display the team work and the collaborative

eort o the Ybor community. Taking this video and up

loading it to Youtube.com will put Ybor’s name on the map

o cities with a prominent art scene. Contacting the local

newspapers and stations this will also bring more visitors and

people to check out what’s going on.

Displayed on a small piece o the mural would be a plaque

o the eatured artist, contact ino and how you can join and

be a part o the movement. Also, will be a small summary o

the project and other objectives o the project. This will give

the visitors and viewers a chance to understand the project

and why it was executed the way it was.

By taking the nal pictures that we use or the murals we can

also covert them into a small coloring books or kids. The

coloring book would be an 8.5x11, picture outlined book

with activities and sites o Ybor. This will be a nice addition

to the git shops, galleries, and stores.

PROJECTED EXPECTATIONS

This project will bring the community together

through art with all ages. While doing this we

will essentially be stopping the grati thattakes place in Ybor and displaying art murals

through the city. These murals will be viewed

by residents o Ybor and visitors. Live painting

is one o the greatest scenes the eyes will ever

see and too see a group o artist displaying

their talent together is inspiring. Also, the more

visitors that come to see this, the more revenueopportunities Ybor will see. The visitors will

want to stay and eat, walk around to see what

else the Ybor has to oer.

This is just a small mural o images put together so you can see what it will look like. These images will be chosen

and voted on by the artist. Again, this will not be the mural but just an idea so we can see what it may look like.

Start Up1. Measure the initial space that the mural will be displayed on. From there we

can get estimates rom large scale printing companies on the cost to print

something like this.

Size of the space on 7th and 19th: 18ft x 60ft

2. Finalize the design or the Mural. Discussing the pictures and

construction o the mural will play a key actor in the projects

3. I’ve contacted a ew printers in the area that are able provide

the proper prints or the murals

5. The next thing we want to do is advertise and push this project through the networking and

social media sites. Facebook, Twitter, and Flickr page with photos and updates o the project.

This biggest hit with the project will be the Youtube Network. A daily cast o how the project

is being constructed. From the meeting we have to the actual project being put up. This will

bring more attention to Ybor art and city scene. This is where we can introduce a website or theproject and the city o ybor artists.

6. The stickers will have web inormation so that whoever goes to the link will nd out about all

the galleries in Ybor and the dierent art events. They will be posted all over Ybor, Channelside,

Hyde Park and surrounding areas. This will get the city interested in seeing the progress o the

project and the artwork down in the city.

WHEAT PASTING INSTRUCTIONSFirst o, grab some four. Cheap, no-name, white four is perect or this. You can easily pick

some up or $1. The rest you should already have around the house. You probably already have

four at the house, but given that you’ll be using a lot, it is good to have some replacement four

on hand.

Making the paste is airly easy. First you have to decide how much you want to make. For every

cup o four you’ll want 4 cups o warm water (1:4 ratio). I make anywhere between a couple cups

o paste to over a gallon o paste depending on my project, just keep everything in the proper

ratio. Mix until there is pretty much no clumping let since you want a very smooth mixture.

Page 13: Ybor Project Brief_draft

In all, you will need1. four

2. water

3. cooking pot

4. stove

5. stirring utensil

(wisk preerably)6. container or the paste

sugar is optional

Pasting is pretty simple. Find a nice semi-smooth wall. It

doesn’t have to be perectly smooth, but too rough and the

poster won’t stick. Concrete is ideal, but dumpsters, brick

walls, etc all work. Lay down a good layer o the wheat paste

onto the surace. Make sure to cover enough area or the en-

tire poster. I you don’t, the poster will have problems once

it is dry. Lay the poster onto the now-wet area. Use your wet

brush to go over the poster, making it nice and soaked in

wheat paste. Let it dry or a couple hours. Done properly and

the poster will be almost impossible to take o.

Ater being properly mixed, place the pot on the stove using medium heat. Mix it oten with

the wisk. As it slowly comes to boil you’ll nd it starts chunking at the bottom o the mixture.

Break this up with the wisk and continue mixing. Eventually it will slowly get thicker until it gets it

reaches a glue like consistency. At this point, you can add a little bit o sugar to add extra “sticki-

ness” to the mixture. Mix the sugar in and take it o the stove. Don’t leave it boiling or the sugar

will burn.

Pour the mixture into your container, let it cool, and then paste it up. You can toss the extra in

the ridge or later, but ater a couple days the wheat paste will go bad and you’ll have to make

a new batch.
