Rebekah was a woman who loved Jeho-vah. Her husband’s name was Isaac. Healso loved Jehovah. How did Rebekahmeet Isaac? How did she show that shewanted to make Jehovah happy? Let’slearn more about her.

Isaac’s parents were Abraham and Sa-rah. They lived in the land of Canaan, where the people did not worship Je-hovah. But Abraham wanted his son tomarry a woman who worshipped Jeho-vah. So he sent his servant, probably Eli-ezer, to find a wife for Isaac in a placenamed Haran, where some of Abra-ham’s relatives lived.

Eliezer traveled with other servants ofAbraham. It was a very long journey. They brought with them ten camels car-rying food and gifts. How would Eliezerknow which woman to choose for Isaac? When Eliezer and the other servants ar-rived at Haran, they stopped at a wellbecause Eliezer knew that people wouldsoon come to get water. He prayed to Je-hovah and said: ‘If I ask a young womanto give me water and she gives me andmy camels water, I will know that this isthe woman you have chosen.’

Then young Rebekah came to the well. The Bible says that she was very pretty.Eliezer asked her for a drink of water, and

she said: ‘Of course. I will give you thewater, and I will go get some for yourcamels too.’ Just think! Thirsty camelsdrink a lot of water, so Rebekah had torun to the well again and again. Do yousee in the picture how hard she is work-ing?— Eliezer was amazed at how Jeho-vah answered his prayer.

Eliezer gave Rebekah many beautifulgifts. She invited Eliezer and the oth-er servants to her family’s house. Eliezerexplained why Abraham had sent himthere and how Jehovah had answeredhis prayer. Rebekah’s family was happyto let her marry Isaac.

But do you think Rebekah wanted tomarry Isaac?— Rebekah knew that Jeho-vah had sent Eliezer there. So when Re-bekah’s family asked her if she wanted togo to Canaan and marry Isaac, she said:‘Yes, I want to go.’ Right away, she left

with Eliezer. When they arrived in Ca-naan, she married Isaac.

Because Rebekah did what Jehovahwanted her to do, Jehovah blessed her. Many years later, Jesus was born in herfamily! If you are like Rebekah and makeJehovah happy, he will bless you too.

QUESTIONS: ˇ Who was Rebekah?ˇ Why did Abraham not want Isaac to marry a woman

from Canaan?ˇ How did Eliezer know that Rebekah was the woman

Isaac should marry?ˇ What can we do to be like Rebekah?

Let’s pretend that we are in the city ofJericho. This city is in the land of Canaan, where the people do not believe in Jeho-vah. A woman named Rahab lives here.

When Rahab was a young girl, sheheard stories about how Moses partedthe Red Sea and led the Israelites out ofEgypt. She also heard about how Jeho-vah helped them to win the wars againsttheir enemies. Now she hears that the Is-raelites are camped near Jericho!

One evening, two Israelites go to Jeri-cho to spy on the city. They come to Ra-hab’s house. She invites them to comein and stay. During the night, the kingof Jericho finds out that spies are in thecity and that they have gone to Rahab’s

house. So the king sends men to getthem. Rahab hides the two spies on theflat roof of her house and tells the king’smen: ‘The spies were here, but they havealready left the city. If you go now, youcan still catch them!’ Do you know whyRahab is protecting the spies?— Be-cause she believes in Jehovah and knowsthat he will give the land of Canaan tothe Israelites.

Before the spies leave Rahab’s house, they promise that she and her family willbe safe when Jericho is destroyed. Doyou know what they tell her to do?—They say: ‘Take this red rope, and hang itout of your window. If you do, everyonewho is in your house will be safe.’ Rahabdoes exactly what the spies tell her to do.Do you know what happens next?—

A few days later, the Israelites marcharound the city in silence. For six daysthey march around the city, one timeeach day. But on the seventh day, theymarch around the city seven times. Thenthey all shout loudly. Jehovah makesthe walls around the city come crashingdown. But the house with the red ropehanging out of the window is still stand-ing! Can you see it in the picture?—Rahab and her family are saved!

What can you learn from Rahab?—Rahab believed in Jehovah because of allthe wonderful things she learned abouthim. You too are learning many won-derful things about Jehovah. Do you be-lieve in him as Rahab did?— We knowthat you do!

QUESTIONS: ˇ What stories did Rahab hear when she was a young girl?ˇ How did she help the Israelite spies? Why did she help them?ˇ What did the spies promise Rahab?ˇ What can you learn from Rahab?

Rahab protected the spies because she believed in Jehovah

Jehovah saved Rahab and her family

Do you see the girl in the picture?—She is the daughter of a man namedJephthah. The Bible does not tell us hername, but we know that she made herfather and Jehovah happy. Let’s learnabout her and her father, Jephthah.

Jephthah was a good man and spent alot of time teaching his daughter aboutJehovah. He was also a strong man and agood leader. So the Israelites asked himto lead them in the fight against their en-emies.

Jephthah prayed for God’s help towin. Jephthah promised that if he won,he would give to Jehovah the first personwho came out of his house when he re-turned home. This person would live and

work for the rest of his or her life at God’stabernacle. The tabernacle was the placewhere people went to worship God backthen. Well, Jephthah won the fight! Doyou know who came out of his housefirst when he returned home?—

Yes, Jephthah’s daughter! She was hisonly child, and now Jephthah wouldhave to send her away. This made himvery sad. But remember, he had made apromise. Right away, his daughter said:‘Father, you made a promise to Jehovah,so you have to keep it.’

Jephthah’s daughter was sad too. Atthe tabernacle, she could not get mar-ried and have children. But she wantedvery much to keep her father’s promiseand to make Jehovah happy. That wasmore important to her than getting mar-ried or having children. So she left homeand lived at the tabernacle for the rest ofher life.

Do you think that what she did madeher father and Jehovah happy?— Yes,it did! If you are obedient and you loveJehovah, you can be like Jephthah’sdaughter. You too will make your parentsand Jehovah very happy.

QUESTIONS: ˇ Who was Jephthah? What promise did he make?ˇ Why was it hard for Jephthah’s daughter to do what her father

had promised?ˇ What did Jephthah’s daughter want to do more than anything

else?ˇ How can you be like Jephthah’s daughter?

It was not easy, but Jephthah’sdaughter did what her fatherpromised

Every year, the friendsof Jephthah’s daughterwent to visit her

Page 12: yc_E.pdf

From the time Samuel was very young,he lived and worked at the tabernacle, the place where people came to worshipJehovah. Do you know how Samuel gotto be at the tabernacle? Let’s first learnabout Samuel’s mother, Hannah.

For a long time, Hannah could nothave a baby even though she really want-ed one. So she prayed to Jehovah andbegged him to help her. She promisedthat if she had a son, she would sendhim to live and work at the tabernacle. Je-hovah answered her prayer, and she hada son. She named him Samuel. And justas Hannah had promised, when Samuelwas three or four years old, she took himto the tabernacle to serve God there.

Eli was the high priest at the taber-nacle. His two sons also worked there.Remember, the tabernacle was God’shouse of worship, and people are sup-posed to do good things there. But Eli’ssons were doing very bad things. Samu-el saw what they were doing. Did Sam-uel do bad things as Eli’s sons did?—No, he kept doing what was right, just ashis parents had taught him to do.

What do you think Eli should havedone about his two sons?— He shouldhave punished them. He should nothave allowed them to work at God’shouse anymore. But Eli did not do that,so Jehovah was angry with him and histwo sons. Jehovah decided to punishthem.

One night when Samuel was sleeping,he heard someone calling him: ‘Samu-el!’ He ran to Eli, but Eli said: ‘I did notcall you.’ This happened two more times. After the third time, Eli told Samuel thatif he heard the voice again, he shouldsay: ‘Please, Jehovah, speak; I am listen-ing.’ So that is what Samuel did. Then Je-hovah said to Samuel: ‘Tell Eli that I willpunish his family for the bad things theyhave done.’ Do you think it was easy for

Samuel to give Eli this message?— No,it was not. But even though Samuel wasafraid, he did what Jehovah told him todo. What Jehovah said came true. Eli’stwo sons were killed, and Eli died too.

Samuel is a good example for us. Hedid what was right even though he sawother people doing bad things. Whatabout you? Will you be like Samuel andkeep doing what is right? If you do, youwill make both Jehovah and your parentshappy.

QUESTIONS: ˇ What promise did Samuel’s mother make?ˇ What did Samuel see Eli’s sons doing at the tabernacle?ˇ What did Jehovah tell Samuel to do?ˇ Why is Samuel a good example for us?

What do you do when you are afraid?—Maybe you go to your mom and dadfor help. But there is someone else whocan help you too. He is more powerfulthan anybody else. Do you know whoit is?— Yes, it is Jehovah God. Let’s talkabout a young man in the Bible namedDavid. He knew that Jehovah would al-ways help him, so he was not afraid.

From the time David was a baby, hisparents taught him to love Jehovah. Thishelped David not to be afraid even whensome scary things happened to him. Heknew that Jehovah was his Friend andthat He would help him. One time, whenDavid was taking care of some sheep, abig lion came and grabbed a sheep with

its mouth! Do you know what David did?He chased after the lion and apparentlykilled it with his bare hands! And thenwhen a bear attacked the sheep, Davidkilled it too! Who do you think helpedDavid?— Yes, it was Jehovah.

There was another time when Davidwas especially brave. The Israelites werefighting against a people called the Phil-istines. One of the Philistine soldiers wasa very, very tall man, a giant! His namewas Goliath. This giant was making funof the Israelite soldiers and of Jehovah.Goliath dared the Israelite soldiers tocome and fight him. But all the Israeliteswere too afraid to fight him. When Da-vid heard about it, he told Goliath: ‘I willfight you! Jehovah will help me, and Iwill defeat you!’ Do you think that Da-vid was brave?— Yes, very brave. Do youwant to know what happened next?

David took his sling and five smoothstones, and he went out to fight thegiant. When Goliath saw how young Da-vid was, he made fun of David. But Davidtold him: ‘You come to me with a sword, but I come to you with the name of Jeho-vah!’ Then he put a stone in his sling, rantoward Goliath, and threw it straight athim. The stone hit Goliath right betweenthe eyes! The giant fell to the ground,

dead! The Philistines got so scared thatthey all ran away. How was a young boylike David able to defeat a giant?— Jeho-vah helped him, and Jehovah was muchmore powerful than that giant!

What can you learn from David’s sto-ry?— Jehovah is more powerful thananybody else. And he is your Friend. Sothe next time you feel afraid, remember,Jehovah can help you to be brave!

QUESTIONS: ˇ What did David do when a lion and a bear attacked his sheep?ˇ When Goliath made fun of Jehovah, what did David say

to him?ˇ How did David defeat Goliath?ˇ Why was David not afraid of the lion, the bear, and the giant?ˇ What can you learn from David’s story?

David was not afraid because he knew that Jehovah would help him

Look at the little boy in the picture. Helooks lonely and afraid, doesn’t he? Haveyou ever felt that way?— Everyone feelsthat way sometimes. The Bible talksabout friends of Jehovah who also feltlonely and afraid. One of them was Eli-jah. Let’s learn about him.

Elijah lived in Israel a long time ago, before Jesus was born. Ahab, the kingof Israel, was not worshipping the trueGod, Jehovah. Ahab and his wife, Jeze-bel, were worshipping the false god Baal.So most of the people in Israel also beganworshipping Baal. Queen Jezebel wasvery mean and wanted to kill all the peo-ple who worshipped Jehovah, includingElijah! Do you know what Elijah did?—

Elijah ran away! He went far into thedesert and hid in a cave. Why do you

Jezebel wantedto kill Elijah

Page 17: yc_E.pdf

think he did that?— Yes, he was afraid. But Elijah did not need to be afraid. Why?Because he knew that Jehovah could helphim. Jehovah had shown his power to Eli-jah before. Once, Jehovah had answeredElijah’s prayer by sending fire from heav-en. So of course Jehovah could help Elijahnow!

While Elijah was in the cave, Jehovahspoke to him and asked him: ‘What areyou doing here?’ Elijah answered: ‘I amthe only one who still worships you. I amall alone, and I am afraid I will be killed.’Elijah thought that all the other worship-pers of Jehovah had been killed. But Jeho-vah told Elijah: ‘No, that is not true. Thereare 7,000 other people who still worshipme. Be brave. I have more work for you todo!’ Do you think Elijah was happy tohear that?—

What can you learn from what hap-pened to Elijah?— You never have to feellonely and afraid. You have friends wholove Jehovah and who love you. Also, Je-hovah has a lot of power, and he will al-ways help you! Are you happy to knowthat you are never really alone?—

QUESTIONS:

ˇ During Elijah’s time, did most ofthe people in Israel worship Jehovah?Whom did they worship?

ˇ Why did Elijah run away and hide ina cave?

ˇ What did Jehovah tell Elijah?ˇ What can we learn from what

happened to Elijah?

Do you think it’s hard to do what isright?— Most people think that it is.The Bible tells us that it was especiallyhard for a boy named Josiah to do whatwas right. But he had good friends whohelped him. Let’s learn more about Josi-ah and his friends.

Josiah’s father was Amon, a king ofJudah. Amon was very bad and wor-shipped idols. When Josiah’s father died,Josiah became king of Judah. But he wasonly eight years old! Do you think hewas bad like his father?— No, he wasnot!

Even when he was very young, Josiahwanted to obey Jehovah. So he chose tobe friends only with people who loved

Jehovah. And they helped Josiah to dowhat was right. Who were some of Josi-ah’s friends?

One of his friends was Zephaniah.Zephaniah was a prophet who warnedthe people of Judah that bad things

Page 19: yc_E.pdf

would happen to them if they wor-shipped idols. Josiah listened to Zepha-niah and worshipped Jehovah, not idols.

Another one of Josiah’s friends was Jer-emiah. He was about the same age as Jo-siah, and they lived near each other asthey were growing up. They were suchgood friends that when Josiah died, Jer-emiah wrote a special song about howmuch he missed Josiah. Jeremiah and Jo-siah helped each other to do what wasright and to obey Jehovah.

What can you learn from Josiah’s ex-ample?— Even when Josiah was just a lit-tle boy, he wanted to do what was right. He knew that he should be friends withpeople who love Jehovah. Make surethat you choose friends who love Jeho-vah and who can help you to do what isright!

QUESTIONS: ˇ Who was Josiah’s father? Did he do what was right?ˇ What did Josiah want to do even when he was just a

little boy?ˇ What were the names of two of Josiah’s friends?ˇ What can you learn from Josiah’s example?

Sometimes people make fun of us or getangry with us when we talk to themabout Jehovah. This can make us want tostop talking about God. Have you everfelt that way?— The Bible tells us about ayoung man who loved Jehovah but whoalmost stopped speaking about him. Hisname was Jeremiah. Let’s learn moreabout him.

When Jeremiah was a young man, Je-hovah told him that he had to warn thepeople to stop doing bad things. Thiswas very hard for Jeremiah, and he wasafraid. He told Jehovah: ‘I don’t knowwhat to say. I’m just a boy.’ But Jehovahsaid: ‘Do not be afraid. I will help you.’

9 Jeremiah Did Not StopSpeaking About Jehovah

READ IN YOUR BIBLEJeremiah 1:4-8;20:7-9; 26:8-19, 24; 38:6-13

Why are the people angry with Jeremiah?

20

Page 21: yc_E.pdf

So Jeremiah started to warn the peo-ple that they would be punished if theydid not change. Do you think the peo-ple did what Jeremiah said?— No. Theymade fun of him or got very angry withhim. Some even wanted to kill him!How do you think Jeremiah felt?— Hewas afraid and said: ‘I’m not going tospeak about Jehovah anymore.’ But didhe really give up?— No, he did not. Heloved Jehovah so much that he could notstop speaking about him. And becauseJeremiah did not give up, Jehovah kepthim safe.

For example, some bad men oncethrew Jeremiah into a deep hole full ofmud. He had no food or water. Thosemen wanted to leave Jeremiah thereto die. But with Jehovah’s help, he es-caped!

What can you learn from Jeremiah’sexample?— Even though he was afraidsometimes, he did not stop speakingabout Jehovah. When you talk about Je-hovah, people may make fun of you orget angry with you. You may feel em-barrassed or even afraid. But never stopspeaking about Jehovah. He will alwayshelp you, just as he helped Jeremiah.

QUESTIONS: ˇ What did Jehovah tell Jeremiah to do?ˇ Why did Jeremiah almost stop speaking about Jehovah?ˇ How did Jehovah help Jeremiah?ˇ What have you learned from Jeremiah’s example?

Is it always easy to obey your par-ents?— Sometimes it is hard. Did youknow that Jesus was obedient both toJehovah and to his parents?— His exam-ple can help you to obey your parentseven when it’s not easy. Let’s learn moreabout this.

Before Jesus was on earth, he was withhis Father, Jehovah, in heaven. But Je-sus also had parents here on earth. Theirnames were Joseph and Mary. Do youknow how they became his parents?—

Jehovah took the life of Jesus in heav-en and put it inside Mary so that Jesuscould be born and live on the earth. Thiswas a miracle! Jesus grew inside Maryjust as other babies grow inside their

mothers. About nine months later, Je-sus was born. This is how Mary and herhusband, Joseph, became Jesus’ parentshere on earth.

When Jesus was only 12 years old, hedid something that showed how muchhe loved his Father, Jehovah. This hap-pened when Jesus and his family madea long trip to Jerusalem for the Pass-over. On the way back home, Joseph andMary could not find Jesus anywhere. Doyou know where he was?—

Joseph and Mary hurried back to Jeru-salem and looked for Jesus everywhere. They were very worried because theycould not find him. But after three days, they found him in the temple! Do youknow why Jesus was at the temple?—Because there he could learn about hisFather, Jehovah. He loved Jehovah andwanted to learn how to please him.Even when he grew up and became aman, Jesus always obeyed Jehovah. Je-sus obeyed even when this was hard forhim and it meant that he had to suffer.Did Jesus also obey Joseph and Mary?—Yes, the Bible says that he did.

What can you learn from Jesus’ ex-ample?— You need to obey your par-ents, even when it is hard. Will you dothat?—

Do you see the men in the picture?— They are Mat-thew, Mark, Luke, John, Peter, James, Jude, and Paul. These men all lived at the same time as Jesus, and theywrote about Jesus. Let’s learn more about them.

Three of them were apostles who preached with Je-sus. Do you know which three?— Matthew, John, and Peter. The apostles Matthew and John knew Je-sus very well, and they each wrote a book about Jesus’

life. The apostle John also wrote a bookcalled Revelation and three letters calledFirst John, Second John, and Third John. The apostle Peter wrote two letters thatare in the Bible. They are called First Pe-ter and Second Peter. In his second letter,Peter wrote about the time when Jeho-vah spoke from heaven and said aboutJesus: ‘This is my son. I love him, and Iam proud of him.’

The other men in the picture alsoteach us about Jesus in the books thatthey wrote. One of them is Mark. He wasprobably there when Jesus was arrestedand saw everything that happened. An-other one is Luke. He was a medical doc-tor and probably became a Christian af-ter Jesus died.

Two other Bible writers that you seein the picture were Jesus’ younger broth-ers. Do you know their names?— Theirnames are James and Jude. At first, they did not believe in Jesus. They eventhought he was a bit crazy. But they lat-er believed in Jesus and became Chris-tians.

The last Bible writer you see in the pic-ture is Paul. Before he became a Chris-

tian, his name was Saul. He hated Chris-tians and was very mean to them. Doyou know what made Paul want to be-come a Christian?— One day, Paul wastraveling on the road when he suddenlyheard someone speak to him from heav-en. It was Jesus! He asked Paul: ‘Whyare you so mean to those who believein me?’ After that, Paul changed and be-came a Christian. Paul wrote 14 books ofthe Bible, Romans through Hebrews.

We read the Bible every day, don’twe?— By reading the Bible, we learnmany things about Jesus. Would youlike to learn more about Jesus?—

Let’s learn about a young man whosaved his uncle’s life. The young man’suncle was the apostle Paul. We do notknow the young man’s name, but we doknow that he did something very brave.Would you like to hear about what hedid?—

Paul was in prison in Jerusalem. Hehad been arrested because he waspreaching about Jesus. Some bad menhated Paul, so they made an evil plan. They said: ‘Let’s ask the army command-er to have his soldiers bring Paul to court. We will hide along the road, and whenPaul passes by, we will kill him!’

Paul’s nephew heard about this plan. What would he do? He went to the pris-on and told Paul about it. Right away,Paul told him to tell the army command-er about the evil plan. Do you think itwas easy for Paul’s nephew to speakto the commander?— No, because thecommander was an important man. ButPaul’s nephew was brave and spoke tothe commander.

The commander knew exactly what todo. He got an army of almost 500 sol-diers to protect Paul! He told them totake Paul to Caesarea that night. WasPaul’s life saved?— Yes, the bad mencould not attack him! Their evil plan didnot work.

What can you learn from this sto-ry?— You too can be brave just like Paul’snephew. We need to be brave when wetalk to others about Jehovah. Will yoube brave and keep speaking about Je-hovah?— If you do, you may save some-one’s life.

Timothy was a young man who was hap-py to help people. He traveled to manyplaces to help others. Because of this, hehad a very exciting life. Would you liketo hear about it?—

Timothy grew up in a city called Lystra. When he was little, his grandmother Loisand his mother, Eunice, began teaching

him about Jehovah. As Timothy grew up,he wanted to help others learn about Je-hovah.

When Timothy was still a young man,Paul asked him to travel with him topreach in other places. Timothy said:‘Yes!’ He was ready to go and help oth-ers.

Timothy’s mother and grandmother taught him about Jehovah

Page 29: yc_E.pdf

Timothy traveled with Paul to a cityin Macedonia called Thessalonica. To getthere, they had to walk a long way andthen take a boat. When they finally ar-rived, they helped many people to learnabout Jehovah. But some people wereangry and tried to hurt them. So Pauland Timothy had to leave and preach inother places.

Some months later, Paul asked Timo-thy to go back to Thessalonica and seehow the brothers were doing. It took alot of courage to go back to that dan-gerous city! But Timothy went becausehe was worried about the brothers there. He came back to Paul with good news. The brothers in Thessalonica were doingvery well!
