As the winter’s coldestdays come around, spare a thought for the
countless stray animals leftshivering in the cold. You cando a lot in making the chillyconditions bearable for them.
“The most basic thing thatthe stray puppies need in thisseason is warmth. This is theseason where one can seemaximum number of newlyborn puppies. They can beprovided temporary shelterin a back alley that is safefrom cars. There, they canput lots of boris (gunny bags)for the mother and thepuppies,” says GeetaSeshamani, co-founder andvice president, Friendicoes.
There are many places inthe city where you will find
stray dogs well-fed, wearingcoats, and lying onmattresses. “There are about10-15 dogs in Khan Marketthat are clothed, vaccinatedand fed by two or threelocals,” says Mohan Kadam ofWindsor in Khan Market. “Igive milk and bread to thedogs on the ITO bridge. I feedthem while coming fromoffice,” says MehakAggarwal, a resident of PreetVihar.
Not only dogs, there areother stray animals thatpeople also take care off. “Ihave been feeding a stray cowand her newly born calf. Ifeed her around eight chapat-tis with jaggery everyday, sothat she can keep warm. Sheis also fed peanuts, pea shellsand leafy vegetables by otherpeople,” says Shubhra Singh,a resident of Mayur Vihar.
