PRINCIPAL’S TEAM REPORT

Subject Selection Prospective Year 11 and 12 students for 2017 will soon receive a blocked subject selection sheet. Which has been developed from student’s initial subject preferences and subjects the school is able to offer . Stu-dents are encouraged to consult widely before submitting their selection sheet for 2017. There is online support through the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre, there are job guides available and discussions with family and teachers to be had to help make informed selections. Child Safe Yea High School is committed to child safety. We want children to be safe, happy and empowered. We support and respect all children, as well as our staff and volunteers. We are committed to the safety, partic-ipation and empowerment of all children. We have zero tolerance of child abuse, and all allegations and safety concerns will be treated very serious-ly and consistently with our robust policies and procedures. We have legal and moral obligations to contact authorities when we are worried about a child’s safety, which we follow rigorously. The school and school council will formally endorse: A child safe policy and statement of commitment to child safety; A code of conduct that establishes clear expectations for appropriate behaviour with children; Screening, supervision, training and other human resources practices that reduce the risk of child

abuse by new and existing personnel; Processes for responding to and reporting suspected child abuse; Strategies to identify and reduce or remove risks of child abuse; Strategies to promote the participation and empowerment of children; Policies and procedures will soon be available for viewing or downloading from our website: www.yeahs.vic.edu.au. They may also be sourced by contacting the school. Sport Day The next Southern Ranges round robin sport day is on Friday 9th September. VCE classes will be running unless a teacher is coaching a team. VCE students are expected to be at school on that day. Parent Teacher interviews and Interim Reports Interim reports will be posted out early in the second last week of Term 3. Parents and students will have the opportunity to meet with teachers to discuss those reports on Thursday evening September 15th between 4.00 p.m. – 6.30 p.m. and on Friday September 16th between 9.30 a.m. – 2.00 p.m. VCE classes will run on that Friday and finish at 2.30 p.m. Classes for Year 7 – Year 10 will not be sched-uled on that Friday to allow for interviews. More information and a booking sheet will be provided with the reports. NAPLAN The 2016 NAPLAN results have been provided to the school. NAPLAN tests held in May measure student performance in Reading, Writing, Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation and Numeracy at Year 7 and Year 9. The results in each of those areas listed above show there has been significant improvement in growth over two years for our Year 9 students. A significant number of students were in the medium to high growth band. NAPLAN results will be posted to families with the interim reports. Netball and Footy Congratulations to the Yea teams who got to play finals in their competitions last weekend. Particularly well done to the Yea Under 16 netball team who won their grand final by one goal. Well done also to the coach-es Lauren Hearn and Jess Armstrong.

Attendance EVERY DAY COUNTS Going to school every day is the single most important part of your child’s education. Students learn new things at school every day – missing school puts them behind. Why it’s important: We all want our students to get a great education, and the building blocks for a great education begin with students coming to school each and every day. Students develop good habits by going to school every day – habits that are necessary to succeed after school, whether in the workplace or in further study. There is no safe number of days for missing school – each day a student misses puts them behind, and can affect their educational outcomes.

YEAR 9 ADVISORY Thank you to Year 9 families for attending the Big Picture Exhibition evening on Monday 29th August. R U OK? Yea High School is hosting an R U OK? Day event on Thursday the 8th of September. R U OK? Is an Aus-tralian initiative to promote suicide prevention. Gavin Larkin began the R U OK? journey in 2009 after the suicide of his son Barry Larkin in 1996. R U OK?’s role is to tackle this heart-breaking issue by helping Aussies to stop feelings of loneliness and isolation among family members, friends and workmates by staying connected and having regular, meaningful conversations. R U OK’s aim is to reduce the stigma around mental illness ad suicide, as well as increase the likelihood that people will access professional sup-port as soon as it’s needed. Some staggering statistics include; About 8 people take their own lives every day in Australia 65,000 people attempt suicide each year Suicide is the biggest killer of Australians under 44 years Men account for around 75 per cent of all suicide deaths Yea High School will be hosting an event to raise awareness, promote positive relationships and conversa-tions, whilst providing students with information as to how they can make a difference. Students will be giv-en the opportunity to purchase an R U OK? Day wristband, compete in a House Basketball Competition at lunch-time, enter a photo challenge competition throughout the day and purchase some sweet treats in-cluding; cupcakes, cookies and slices (also available at lunch-time). For more information and conversation tips, visit ruok.org.au

‘A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM’ EXCURSION

10A, 10B and a group of Year 9 (Community Connections) students attended an excursion at the Melbourne

Arts Centre. Thanks to First Call Funding and parents contributions, students were able to attend an amaz-

ing performance of ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ presented by the Bell Shakespeare Company and enjoy

lunch down on Southbank. Students had a fantastic day and enjoyed the cultural experience. Thanks to Ro-

wan Treloar, Melissa McNab and Ella Patane who attended and supported the excursion.

CREATING CONVERSATIONS Thank you to all who attended our year 10 Creating Conversations Evening at Yea High School on the 22nd of August. Creating Conversations is a Health Program that aims to break down the communication barriers between teenagers and parents when it comes to talking about drugs and alcohol. Parents participated in a series of activities which are facilitated by the students, who have been practicing in Health lessons this term. Activities ranged from asking parents to put themselves in their child's shoes to ranking harmful situa-tions, and getting conversations flowing. The evening was attended by a local drug and alcohol worker, po-lice and ambulance officers who formed a panel at the end of the activities where parents asked questions whilst students prepared supper.

PARTY SAFE On Tuesday the 30th of August all year 9 students participated in our Party Safe activities. This day was to finish off and celebrate our work in health classes relating to drugs, alcohol and sexual health. The day was attended by local police officers, ambulance workers, a drug and alcohol worker as well as Wendy Kelly who all provided valuable information to the students in regards to being safe at parties and provided them with knowledge on where to get help if need be. Thank you to all who made this day possible.

COMMUNITY

CONNECTIONS Year 9 students completed Ap-ply Basic First Aid certificates as part of the Advance Program for Community Connections. I was thrilled to receive glowing feed-back from the trainers at Safety First on what an outstanding group of young people we have in Year 9. Well done to all stu-dents!

STEM EXCURSION As part of National Science Week, students travelled to Wangaratta to attend the STEM (Science, Technol-ogy, Engineering and Math) Careers Expo. The excursion was funded by the 100 ways in 100 days cam-paign being ran by the Central Ranges LLEN. Students got to experience future technology with hands on exhibits of drones, robots and 3D printing and programming. 30 students took up the opportunity to attend this expo. It was great to see them interested in a number of displays.
