Introduction to the sport and recreation industry

INTRODUCTION Sport and recreation is a thriving industry in Australia where our passion for sport has become an important element of our national identify. Whether it be watching sport on television, spectating from the sidelines, being involved in competitive sport or just playing backyard cricket, sport and recreation is important not only for enjoyment and fun but also for good health. The sport and recreation industry is quite diverse with a range of job opportunities for people with a variety of knowledge, skills and personal attributes. The words sport and recreation are often used interchangeably, however, there are distinct differences. The Oxford dictionary defines sport as “an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment”. Sport is competitive and formal; rules and regulations are followed. People participate in sport for fun and enjoyment or with a focus on competition within a tournament, league or event. Elite sport involves athletes who compete on the national or world stage. Recreation on the other hand can be defined as “activity done for enjoyment when one is not working”. Recreation is not competitive; it is done for fun, enjoyment, relaxation, health benefits and social interaction with family and/or friends. Examples of recreational activities are surfing, bushwalking, bike riding and swimming, though these recreational activities can be considered sport if they are competitive in nature. For example, a 42-year-old woman going swimming in the morning before work would be considered recreation, whereas an athlete getting up at 4am to go to swim training in preparation for a national meet would be considered sport.

PARTICIPATION IN SPORT AND RECREATION Participation in the sport and recreation industry in Australia is huge. The Australian Bureau of Statistics reported that from 2009 to 2010 11.1 million Australians aged 15 and over (64% of the adult population) participated in some form of physical activity for recreation, exercise or sport. Of these 4.5 million participated in organised sport and physical recreation. There has been a minor decrease in participation over the last few years with the Australian Bureau Of Statistics reporting that in 2013–2014 60% of the adult population participated in some form of sport and physical recreation and of this only 28% are currently involved in organised sport and physical activity. This decline could be due to more people becoming involved as spectators or working longer hours leaving little or no time for sport and recreation.

BENEFITS OF BEING ACTIVE Regular physical activity has many benefits not only to a person’s physical health but also to their mental and social wellbeing. Being regularly active means doing a minimum of 30 minutes of moderate intensity exercise 3 – 4 times a week. The 30-minutes does not need to be done all at once; it can be a done in three, ten minute sessions. A person who regularly exercises is less likely to:

• be overweight or obese • suffer from heart disease and stroke • develop type II diabetes • develop hypertension (high blood pressure) • develop some forms of cancer such as

colorectal • suffer from sleep issues

Regular exercise enables a person to keep their bodies strong through maintaining muscle mass and enhancing bone development. This can prevent the onset of osteoporosis which can lead to fragile and easily broken bones. An increase in strength, mobility, balance and concentration can be particularly important as a person reaches old age, as they have an increased risk of falls and injury. Through the prevention of injury and disease the whole of Australia benefits as fewer people require health services and prescription medications. The money saved can be reallocated to areas such as education, roads and welfare benefits. The reduction in the use of health services also decreases waiting times for those who need it the most. This is why you often see private health insurance providers offering free health checks and Fitbits or other activity/exercise trackers. In the long term if people are healthier and require less health services the company wins through less insurance payouts.

Being active also benefits a person’s social and mental health by allowing them to interact socially with others, increasing confidence and self-esteem. When a person exercises their body releases endorphins, these endorphins make a person feel happy, positive and good about themselves, which can reduce feelings of stress, anxiety and depression. This leads to an overall improvement in a person’s quality of life.

FIT IT IN! – BRAINSTORMING ACTIVITY

As we explored in the previous activity there are many reasons why people do not engage in regular physical activity. Most often it is due to insufficient time available in the day due to work, study and/or family commitments. List three suggestions that you could make to each of the following people on how they could incorporate 30-minutes of exercise into their day. Remember that the 30-minutes can be broken up over a day.

KAREN Karen is a busy mum; she has two children; her daughter Lily is three and a half years old and her son Harrison is 9-months old. She is home with the kids every day and her husband works long hours. He often doesn’t get home until 7:30 pm and by then Karen has already fed and bathed the kids ready for bed.

GEORGE George is a barrister; he works in the CBD. He drives to work every morning and arrives at 8 am after a quick stop off at his favourite café for a large latte and a croissant. He normally leaves work at 7 pm and picks up take away dinner on his way home as he doesn’t have time to cook. He doesn’t really feel like he needs to worry about exercising as he is not overweight.

THE SECTORS The sport and recreation industry is made up of four sectors. The four sectors have some similarities but are also quite diverse. The fours sectors are:

§ The sport sector includes both formal and informal activity pursued for exercise or pleasure. It includes sporting competitions, tournaments and unofficial sport played between friends in the park, eg: five-against-five soccer, or a hit of tennis on a local court. The sport sector covers all sporting levels; professional, amateur and community. Employees in the sport sector include coaches, umpires, referees, assistants and health professionals. Many organisations pay millions of dollars a year to sponsor sporting teams or events. Through the media, sport exposure in Australia is quite high, with even a free-to-air channel dedicated to sport (Channel Ten – One HD). In Australia, sport brings people together to attend, watch and play.

§ The fitness sector includes exercise completed with the aim of achieving fitness, health benefits or

improved sports performance. For example, personal training, going to the gym, resistance training or boot camp. It can be highly structured, like taking a class with a set start and finish time, or informal like going for a bike ride or a run. The fitness industry is booming in Australia with many council-run facilities and private sector gyms opening to cope with the demand. It is a multi-million dollar industry with lots of new ideas and ways to get fit entering the market everyday. Employees in the fitness sector include personal trainers, gym instructors, administrators, class instructors and health professionals.

§ The outdoor recreation sector includes any

activities completed outdoors such as rock climbing, bushwalking and skiing. Australia has such a diverse landscape, providing many opportunities for outdoor recreational experiences. This sector includes all facilities and employees involved in running or facilitating outdoor activities, including campsites, national parks, tours, camps and gardens. Employees in this sector include tour guides, park rangers, administrators, instructors (eg rock climbing, kayaking) and camp leaders.

§ The community recreation sector includes retail outlets relating to sport and recreation, for example Rebel Sport, Sports Co and Athletes Foot. It also includes formal and informal community-based sport and recreation. Formal recreation includes sport and recreation competitions and participants who generally take their sport seriously. Informal recreation includes sport and recreation played for social reasons, for example, having a game of soccer with a group of mates at the local park.

EMPLOYMENT IN THE INDUSTRY There are a number of employment opportunities in the sport and recreation industry. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) in 2011 there were 95,590 persons employed in the sport and recreation industry. This data showed a substantial increase in employment in the industry up by 21% from the 2006 census. It is expected that a further increase will be seen in the 2016 census in August. Of those employed in the industry 58% were male and 42% female. The majority of them were fitness instructors (21,514 persons), greenkeepers (who look after grass/turf for parks, gardens and sporting fields/ovals) (11,345 persons), and swimming coaches/instructors (10,281 persons).

Many people working in the industry worked part-time. This may be young people working while they study, people wanting flexible hours and hours of operation. For example, a personal trainer may work 6am – 9am and 4pm – 9pm to coincide with the availability of clients. Due to the part-time nature of the industry it was found at the average total cash earnings of people employed in sport and recreation industry were $658.80 per week (2012). The sport and recreation industry attracts one of the highest number of volunteers. A volunteer can be defined as a person who takes on a role, carries out tasks and/or provides services for individuals or community organisations without financial compensation. Example of volunteers in the sport and recreation are coaches, umpires/referees, runners, water people, trainers and first aid attendants. In 2010 it was recorded by the ABS that 2.3 million people had volunteered in the industry. Many of these volunteers came from families with kids (42%).

Many employers not only look at a person’s level of formal qualifications, they also look for an applicant that possesses a range of skills and attributes. Individuals working in sport and recreation require specialty skills that are a part of who they are as a person, such as an ability to lead by example, personal drive and a willingness to succeed. To work in the sport and recreation industry you need to have a genuine interest in people and working with clients, participants and athletes to assist them to achieve their goals and ambitions. Taking on a role such as a coach, instructor or trainer also requires you to be a role model especially when working with children and young people.
