Term 1 Term 2 Term 3 Term 4 Term 5

What do we mean by extreme environments? Intro to extreme environments. Students gain an understanding of various factors that define an extreme environment, including why it is difficult for people to survive in hazardous, unstable, remote, harsh climates and landscapes. Students will understand how people react to extreme environments in different ways and over time.

Hot Desert environments. Students start the topic by studying how hot deserts are represented in a range of cultural resources. They will learn where hot deserts are found and the environmental conditions needed to form them. Students will learn what the climate of hot deserts is like and what climatic conditions lead to these dramatic changes in temperature. Students will gain an in depth understand of the different ways people use hot deserts; ranging from nomadic tribes transporting salt across the vast terrain to Oil companies exploiting natural resources below the surface. Students will analyse the positive and negative effects people have on the deserts and evaluate the sustainability of different regions; including desertification of marginal areas and the impacts climate change is having now and in the future.

1st assessment to be completed by 31st Oct. Though Students will complete small assessments throughout the course.

Mountain Environments. Students begin the topic by studying how mountains are represented in a range of cultural resources. They will study a range of travel journals, clips from documentaries, poems and paintings to gain an appreciation that mountains are viewed and represented by people in different ways. Students will know where mountain ranges are found and be able to explain the physical processes which formed them. Though Students study a broad range of locations, their primary example of a mountain environment will be the Andes in South America. Students will learn about the physical process which shape mountain environments and they will be able to link this to changing climatic conditions. Students will study in depth how people use mountain environments and will appreciate that mountains can provide valuable natural resources which can be exploited. Students will evaluate the use of mountain environments and will finish the topic by researching sustainable management strategies. Students will complete a trial exam in May and several small assessments throughout this topic.

Earthquakes. Our case study for this topic is Haiti in the Caribbean. Students will complete an in depth study about the Haiti earthquake. Students will be able to explain the physical processes which caused the earthquake. They will study the short and long term impacts of the event for the people living in Haiti and especially in the capital of Porto Prince. Students will compare the management strategies used in Haiti with other earthquakes around the world and evaluate the future earthquake risk for people living in the area. Students will complete a short exam paper based on this topic at the end of term 5.

Assessment Point 1 – 1st assessment to be taken before 31st October. Introduction to Extreme Environments.

Smaller assessments will be completed at the end of each topic and as required to ensure as much data as possible is used to make GCSE predictions.

Assessment point 2 – Based on Trial Exam (Extreme Environments) and Trial Geographical Skills Exam (Y10)
