Task

You need to complete specific coursework pages using PowerPoint. You have been prepared for this during the last

two weeks of term and all the specific content you need is in your exercise book. You need to hand in the following

completed pages on the first lesson back, ensuring you have them saved on a USB stick: 1. Investigations of user and stakeholder needs and wants.

2. Design brief.

3. Investigations of existing products and design practices.

Resources

You have been given a support booklet to help you understand what needs to be on each slide and examples of

how you could present your work. You need to use this booklet, alongside the work in your exercise book, to fully

complete each task. The booklet is also available for you to access on Doddle.

Drama Head of Department: Mr T Griffiths [email protected]

Task 1) Using the “green pen” Live Theatre re-write material plus the hand outs for your chosen production re do the exam question: Evaluate how two actors used performance skills to communicate their character to the audience. You must include examples from the live performance you have seen in your answer. At the start of your answer state the name, venue and date (month and year) of the live performance you have seen. (30 marks) You should spend no more than 45 minutes on this section 1. 2) You know whether you are studying DNA by Dennis Kelly for the National Theatre, or The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time by Mark Haddon adapted by Simon Stephens for the National Theatre. Hopefully you have noticed there is a common link between these two productions! Visit the National Theatre site find the information / resources / Educational packs for your chosen play and take screen shots / create a list of the resources and watch the video extracts of the production – so you know what your performance could look like and you have access to all the information that will allow you to create a monologue and a small group piece for your GCSE practical examination. Spend 45 minutes, at least, on this section 2. 3) Blood Brothers by Willy Russell. There are two fact cards following this statement. Use these to write the essay – keep everything in the box. You might need to do a draft first and then condense it down! The exam skill here is saying a lot in a little space. Also annotate the picture.

Economics Head of Department: Mr B Makamba [email protected]

Task Complete the worksheet looking at and researching the developing economy of Venezuela.

Resources Worksheet.

Year 10 Economics Transition Work: Developing Economies

Just in case you forget how much fun you have in your economics classes we have create a few things for

you to do over the summer break!

Using the above and other evidence answer the following

1 Is there much evidence to suggest that the Venezuelan economy is in recession?

Explain your answer

2 Analyse why Venezuela lacked economic growth in 2016.

In 2016, the Venezuelan economy came close to collapse, and it was predicted that its GDP

would fall by 8% and it would have 720% per annum inflation. This is an oil producer which

was so badly mismanaged that it failed to produce enough energy for its own needs. Civil

servants have been told to work just 2 days a week and clocks have been moved forward by

half an hour in an attempt to save costs.

Venezuela should be a rich county. It has the largest oil reserves in the world, and yet

introduced drastic power cuts, which in some areas has lasted for days. Many economist

believe that this has happened due to the government mismanagement of the country’s

state owned oil industries. The state has managed the industry so poorly that Venezuela’s

oil production fell by 25% between 1999 and 2013. The government has spent the oil

revenues to help redistribute incomes in the county in order to reduce poverty. This was a

popular move but the government spend more than it received and when oil process fell

matters became worse.

Task

Spoken Language Endorsement Preparation

In class, with the guidance of your English teacher, you will have drafted a speech. Your task over the summer holidays is to learn and rehearse this speech so you can deliver it in front of the class and your teacher. You will not be expected to deliver your speech on the first day back, but you should be fully prepared to deliver it in the first week and make sure it is ready to go before the end of the summer holidays.

10 Tips on Memorising Your Speech

1. Divide your speech up into sections- break it up into small chunks and concentrate on learning one part at a time.

2. Use flashcards (but not with full sentences on) to write down the key headings and words which will jog your memory.

3. Don’t try and learn it word for word, like a script. Try to remember the main points and ideas you want to communicate and the order you want to say them in. Over-reliance on an exact script can make it difficult to get back on track if you forget a word or phrase.

4. Time yourself to make sure your speech is longer than 5 minutes and not longer than 10 minutes.

5. Record yourself saying your speech, using all your notes, and listen to it back when you are walking/travelling etc.

6. Rehearse in front of a friend or family members. Ask them to ask you questions afterwards so you can practice responding to questions.

7. Focus on learning one part/section of your speech each week.

8. Try to focus on speaking slowly and clearly, adding in emphasis on particular words. You need to sound passionate about your topic, and interested by it.

9. Remember, the more prepared you feel the more confident you will feel delivering your speech.

10. Little and often is the best way to memorise and reduce the stress of preparing for your speech.

FAQs

How long does my speech need to be?

Your speech needs to be between 5-10 minutes long. You will deliver a presentation, and then you will be required to answer some questions. The teacher will ask questions which might ask your opinion on something you’ve talked about, or your thoughts on something. They arenot trying to catch you out or ask about something you would need information and research for.

8 | P a g e

What is the assessor looking for?

Your teacher assess your speech and they will want to see you looking up and note just reading from a page, using a range of vocabulary and communicating your ideas in a clear and effective way.

When and where will I perform my speech?

You will perform your speech in front of your class and your teacher, during your English lessons in the first 1-2 weeks back after the summer holidays. It will be recorded so evidence can be sent to the exam board. Everyone else in your class will also be speaking in front of the class, and in the past we’ve found students to be very polite and supportive audiences as they are all in the same situation.

How is the speech graded?

You will receive a pass, merit or distinction. In the unlikely event you fail your spoken language endorsement, it will most probably be due to a very, very short speech or very limited replies to questions.

I feel nervous about delivering my speech. What would you suggest?

The more prepared and rehearsed your speech is, the more confident and calm you will feel. Try having a few practice runs in front of family members or friends. Remember that everyone in your year will be going through the same experience, and that every year students overcome their nerves to deliver great speeches. Lots of students feel very proud of themselves afterwards and it is a really important life experience to speak publically. Everyone in the room will be encouraging and want to put you at ease, and your teacher will give you help and advice.

Can I use notes and slides?

You are not expected to use slides, but you can if you need to show an image or diagram. Words on slides should be kept to a minimum and ideally not used at all. You can have notes, but these should not be full sentences and should be bullet points/key words. Try to avoid reading out a piece of paper or slides.

Task

Page 1 In Question 2 you will have to annotate an unseen text and then compare it to one of your set products. You will need to embed media language as this is how representations are created. You have an additional 10 minutes in order to annotate your text. You should do this quickly and thoroughly. Below is a list of questions to ask of any unseen text.

Media Language

Context

1. When was this text made? How does it reflect that time period?

2. Has the text been shaped by social and historical context. Is there a particular message or value.

3. Has the text been shaped by a political context?

4. Has an audience’s perception of this text changed over time?

Media Language

How does the text use mise en scene and camera work to communicate a message or create a

11 | P a g e

Representation?

What is the narrative (story) of the text and how does the combination of media language elements create this?

Has anything been left out? Does this create a narrative?

Are the codes & conventions of this genre used or ignored/changed in some way?

Is there any intertextuality?

What are the connotations of the text as a whole or parts of the text? (refer to specific images/text)

Representation

How has reality been constructed?

How have the producers chosen to construct an event/idea/social group or person?

How have stereotypes been used?

Has anyone been under represented or mis-represented?

What viewpoint/message/value or belief has been presented?

How can you apply representation theory (eg Mulvey’s male gaze (are women there just to be looked at for men’s pleasure) or Propp’s narrative theory – is anyone presented as a hero or damsel in distress)

What is the social/cultural/political significance of this text both now and historically (if not a more modern text)?
