SECTION 3 –GRAMMAR AND TRANSLATION ACTIVITIES: TRANSLATION ENGLISH TO SPANISH
A Look at this sentence in English and its Spanish translation. What can you say about it?
Think about the verbs in the sentence, or adverbs to do with frequency.
B Now translate this sentence and think about what you need to look out for.
__________________________________________________________________________
C Translate these sentences. Parts of the first three have been translated to help you.
1 In winter I never go windsurfing.
En invierno nunca … _______________________________________________________
2 When it’s sunny I often go to the beach with my family.
Cuando hace … ____________________________________________________________
3 Pablo lives in Costa Rica and in summer plays tennis twice a week.
Pablo vive ... ______________________________________________________________
__________________________________________________________________________
4 If it’s bad weather I watch TV or sometimes I write emails.
__________________________________________________________________________
5 From time to time my friends swim in the sea.
__________________________________________________________________________
The verb ‘go’ is often used in English for talking about the activities
you do when in Spanish a different verb, usually the verb hacer, is
used.
We say ‘go horse riding’ and ‘go
skiing’ in English but which verb
should you use for these activities in
Spanish?
Personal pronouns (I, you,
we, etc) are not usually
used in Spanish, since the
verb ending tells you who
the subject is.
Some Spanish frequency expressions cannot be translated word for word, and so it is
better to learn them as set phrases. You wouldn’t translate todos los días here as ‘all
the days’, but as ‘every day’.
En verano hago natación todos los días y a menudo chateo en línea con mis amigos.
In summer I go swimming every day and I often chat online with my friends.
D Translate the passage below into Spanish. Some words and expressions have been
translated to help you.

SECTION 3 – GRAMMAR AND TRANSLATION ACTIVITIES: SPANISH TO ENGLISH
A Read the text about Elena’s trip to Málaga and answer the questions.
El verano pasado fui a Málaga con mis padres. Viajamos en avión. Fue muy rápido, pero también un poco aburrido. Nos alojamos en un hotel muy lujoso e hicimos muchas actividades interesantes.
1 Is Elena talking about going to Málaga in the future or in the past? How do you know?
__________________________________________________________________________
2 What was Elena’s experience like? Circle the correct answer.
a positive b negative c positive and negative
3 Underline the adjectives in the text that help you to answer this question. How many of them are positive and how many are negative? Do you think they are easy to understand? Why?
__________________________________________________________________________
__________________________________________________________________________
B Look at the text again and find the Spanish translations for these verbs.
1 we stayed ______________________
2 we travelled ______________________
3 it was ______________________
4 we did ______________________
5 I went ______________________
Remember - in English we say to play + sport (e.g. we play
football) but in Spanish we say jugar a + sport (e.g. jugamos a la
pelota, jugamos al fútbol).
I live in Málaga in the south of Spain. In summer it’s hot and casi nunca (it almost never) rains. Every day I go to the beach with my friends. Sometimes jugamos al (we play) football or we swim in the sea and nos encanta (we love) diving too.
Sometimes you can guess the meaning of a word by looking at the other words it is used with. For example, in this text, you can guess that nos alojamos means ‘we stayed’ because it is used with ‘un hotel’ which is the same in English.
C Fill the gaps to complete the translation of the text in activity A.
Last summer I went ____ Málaga ________
_________ __________. We travelled _____
__________. It was ________ quick but
______ ____ ______ boring. We stayed in
____ _______ _____________
__________ and we did _______ of
_____________ _____________ .
D In this text Elena gives more details about her trip to Málaga. Answer the questions below.
Afortunadamente, el hotel estaba en el centro de la ciudad. Era muy moderno, pero no era demasiado caro. Tenía un gimnasio, dos restaurantes enormes y una discoteca. Había una piscina climatizada y la playa estaba muy cerca también. ¡Qué práctico!
1 What is Elena describing? Look at the verbs – which tense are they in?
__________________________________________________________________________
2 Find the two different words that mean ‘(it) was’ in the text. Think about when these are used and discuss your ideas with a partner.
__________________________________________________________________________
__________________________________________________________________________
3 In this text there are two other verbs commonly used to describe things in the past. What are they? Translate them into English.
__________________________________________________________________________
__________________________________________________________________________
4 Make a list of all the cognates (words that are similar in both languages) you can find in this text and compare it with a partner’s list.
__________________________________________________________________________
__________________________________________________________________________
It’s important to use the correct subject pronoun (I, it, we etc.) when you translate into English. Knowing the different verb endings in Spanish and using the context will help you to do this.
Remember that the order of words can be different in English and Spanish. Adjectives, for example, mostly come after a noun in Spanish but before a noun in English.
E Now translate the text into English. When you finish, check the translation with one of your classmates.
Afortunadamente, el hotel estaba en el centro de la ciudad. Era muy moderno, pero no era demasiado caro. Tenía un gimnasio, dos restaurantes enormes y una discoteca. Había una piscina climatizada y la playa estaba muy cerca también. ¡Qué práctico!

Look out for cognates (words that are the same or similar in English). There are several in this text. Sometimes looking at a small part of a word can help you to understand it.
Remember to look at the verb endings and to check which tense they are in. In this text there are several verbs in the imperfect tense that end in -ía and -aba. This tells you that Elena is describing something in the past.
A small part of this word is similar to the English word. Can you see it?
‘The centre of the city’ is the word-for-word translation of this, but can you think of a more natural-sounding translation?
