School is the place to beThe leaving age for school is now 17 with students

encouraged to complete year 12. A student may leave earlier to move into a full time apprenticeship/traineeship

or full time training.

Staying at school is also valued by employers: • Greater maturity• Higher level of analytical skills• Driver’s license (or close to getting one) • Increased physical strength• Better value for employer’s dollar• Stronger social network of friends

VCE or VCALVictorian Certificate of Education Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning

VCE is a TWO YEAR PROGRAM

At the end of year 12, students receive a STUDY SCORE for each subject plus an ATAR Score which can be used for entry into university.

VCAL is a ONE YEAR PROGRAM with three levels:

•Foundation•Intermediate•Senior

Students complete one level in year 11 and a second level in year 12.

VCE – Key Points• English is the only compulsory study• VCE studies are assessed by completing ‘outcomes’• Students receive an ‘S’ for satisfactory completion of an

outcomes• All outcomes in each subject must satisfactorily be

completed • Class attendance is one criteria for successfully completing

VCE• All subjects include exams • A VCE program can include a VET study or a School Based

Apprenticeship

VCAL – Key PointsVictorian Certificate of Applied Learning

VCAL has three levels Foundation Intermediate Senior

Year 11 Year 12

VCAL students complete six subjects Five of the subjects are compulsory strands • Literacy (can be VCE English)• Numeracy (can be VCE Mathematics)• Personal Development Skills• Work Related Skills (can be VCE Technology Subjects) • Industry Specific Skills (VET study or School Based Apprenticeship)

The sixth subject is an elective chosen from the VCE subject list Students receive a Certificate for each level completed

VCAL VCAL is NOT an easy option!! VCAL is often project based YOU, not your teacher is

responsible for: for organising projects communicating with people

outside the school writing letters collating information researching presenting your project

VETVocational Education and Training

What is VET ?• Vocational based certificates (hands on)• Certificate II and/or Certificate III level

Eg. Certificate II in Building and Construction (Carpentry)Eg. Certificate II in Hospitality

• VET courses run once a week over 2 years• VET courses are mostly completed at a TAFE or Registered

Training Organisation• A VET course counts towards VCE as a subject• A VET course or SBA is compulsory for Intermediate and Senior

SBA School Based Apprenticeship

What is an SBA ?

• Attend school, work with an employer and complete a Certificate II or III level qualification

• An SBA is usually completed over 2 years• Students work ONE day and attend school FOUR days• Students are registered with the Australian Apprenticeship Centre

and receive a wage from the employer• Completion of SBA training modules counts towards a full time

apprenticeship• An SBA counts as a VCE subject• An SBA counts in a VCAL program

1. 90-95% class attendance2. Know your learning style
