Achievement standard Students will be required to achieve 14 C grades (or equivalents, see below) in Year 11 and Year 12 units, including at least six C grades in Year 12 units (or equivalents). Unit equivalence can be obtained through VET programs and/or endorsed programs. The maximum unit equivalence available through these programs is eight units – four Year 11 units and four Year 12 units. Students may obtain unit equivalence as follows:

Up to eight unit equivalents through completion of VET programs, or

Up to four unit equivalents through completion of endorsed programs, or

Up to eight unit equivalents through a combination of VET and endorsed programs, but with endorsed programs contributing no more than four unit equivalents.

The amount of unit equivalence allocated to VET and endorsed programs are as follows: VET qualifications

Certificate II is equivalent to two Year 11 and two Year 12 units

Certificate III or higher is equivalent to two Year 11 and four Year 12 units

Endorsed Programs – unit equivalence is identified on the Authority’s approved list of Endorsed Programs.

Year 11 Fremantle College will be offering the following:

School Curriculum and Standards Authority (SCSA) Courses - both General and ATAR

Training WA Certificates

Opportunity to apply and be accepted into the Voc Links program, which includes either TAFE or Workplace learning.

All WACE courses consist of units, each with its own syllabus. Students are encouraged to study units appropriate to their level of development. For example, university bound students would generally study a program of mostly ATAR courses in Year 11 and 12. Students intending to enter Training WA courses or employment will generally study a combination of General courses and certificates. In many instances students interested in entering university will also study a Training WA certificate.

How to use this handbook This book presents a summary of the courses available and other vital information necessary to make good choices. It does not stand alone. Advice and information is available from the Associate Principal – Years 10-12, Student Services Manager Years 10,11 & 12 and nominated Course Counsellors. It is very important when selecting courses that attention is paid to minimum entry requirements published by Universities in their annual guides. It may not be possible to timetable some courses if they are chosen by a very small number of students and certain combinations may not be available where particular courses are timetabled to run at the same time.

2020 VOCATIONAL EDUCATION AND TRAINING PATHWAYS (VET) Vocational Education and Training (VET) Certificate II and III qualifications are designed for those students seeking to gain job-related knowledge, skills and experience in order to enter further training or the workforce directly from school. Most have a strong practical focus. Students who might consider a TAFE or vocational pathway after school are advised to consider a Certificate offered at the college and completed over the two years of WACE. In order to enrol and receive results in a certificate course, students must supply a USI (Unique Student Identifier). They can apply online for this by visiting www.usi.gov.au and using an ID document such as a Medicare card, a driver’s permit, an Australian birth certificate or passport or an immigration card. Failure to supply a correct USI will result in non-achievement of certificates and possibly failure to achieve a WACE. Assistance can be provided at the school to apply for the USI. Certificates can be gained in three ways. 1. Certificates delivered by Fremantle College. Most students will gain their certificate in this way. In 2020 the following certificates are being offered. Full descriptions of these courses can be found on the following pages.

Certificate II in Business

Certificate II in Community Services

Certificate II in Engineering Pathways

Certificate II in Hospitality

Certificate II in Information, Digital Media and Technology

Certificate II in Outdoor Recreation

Certificate III in Music Industry

2. Certificates delivered by external training providers, including State Training Providers (TAFEWA)

Year 11 students who are enrolled in a Certificate of Qualification in 2020 will continue this course of study through Year 12 in 2021. An exception to this is the Certificate in Community Services that will be completed in one (1) year. Some courses at external training providers will be offered to suitable students. These students will need to have their enrolment in external certificate courses completed by the due date. Attendance at external training providers may involve additional costs for course enrolment, textbooks, uniforms or special equipment. 3. On-the-job training School-based traineeships (SBTs) and school-based apprenticeships (SBAs) may be offered to some students. This depends on whether they have an employer who is willing to offer a traineeship or apprenticeship and whether they are working in an area which is eligible for these programs. Contact the VET Co-ordinator/ Workplace Learning Co-ordinator for further details.
