ICT Exam Board

Edexcel GCSE in ICT

Course Content

The Edexcel GCSE in ICT comprises two units, Units 1 and 2.

Unit 1 is 40% of the total GCSE

In this unit students explore how digital technology impacts on the lives of individuals, organisations and

society. Students will learn about current and emerging digital technologies and the issues raised by their

use in a range of contexts (learning and earning, leisure, shopping and money management, health and

wellbeing and on the move). Students will develop awareness of the risks that are inherent in using ICT

and the features of safe, secure and responsible practice.

Unit 2 is 60% of the total GCSE

This is a practical unit. Students broaden and enhance their ICT skills and capability. Students will work

with a range of digital tools and techniques to produce effective ICT solutions in a range of contexts.

Students will learn to reflect critically on their own and others’ use of ICT and to adopt safe, secure and

responsible practice.

Art & Design Exam Board

AQA GCSE Art and Design Fine Art

Assessment & Assessment Dates

Students have been a set a project to be completed by their return from the Autumn half term break. The

work produced will count towards their GCSE coursework.

A two day, 10 hour mock exam will be sat just before the Christmas break (date to be confirmed).

A two day, 10 hour end of year exam will take place in May (date to be confirmed). Students will be given

an exam title to choose from in January 2016.

All work will be assessed by Miss Zuberi and an external moderator will check them.

Course Content

Students are graded on their coursework, a portfolio of work that indicates their skill, talent and

knowledge, and an externally set task that is set in the January of year 11. Students are required to

produce prep work and a final outcome which will be completed during the two day final exam in May.

There are four Assessment Objectives: Develop, Refine, Record and Present. Each AO is worth 20 marks,

giving a total of 80 marks that may be awarded. The assessment objective’s are used to grade the

coursework and externally set task separately. Coursework and the externally set task are worth 60% and

40% or a student's final grade respectively.

Students are currently working on a mock exam project which will contribute to their coursework. The

deadline for this will be at the end of the Autumn term.

TIPS FOR SUCCESS:

1. Stay on top of your work. Complete tasks quickly when they are set and don’t allow yourself to fall

behind.

2. Do more than is asked. It is better to have a lot of work and only submit the best, that have too little

and no choice.

3. Use variety in your work. Try to experiment with lots of different types of media, materials

and techniques.

Business Studies

Assessment & Assessment Dates

The three units of the course will be assessed through examinations and controlled assessments detailed

for each unit below:

Unit 1. 1 Hour exam worth 40% of final grade.

Unit 2. 1 Hour exam worth 35% of final grade.

Unit 3. Controlled Assessment based on Unit 1. This work is set by the exam board and carried

out under exam conditions. Worth 25% of final grade. The Controlled Assessment will be carried out

in October 2016.

Drama Exam Board

AQA GCSE Drama

Assessment & Assessment Dates Unit 2 — Performance Exam 1

30% of the final grade: 5th and 6th October. Consists of a formally assessed rehearsal process and a final

performance for an invited audience.

Unit 2 — Performance Exam 2

30% of the final grade: February/March 2016(TBC). Consists of a formally assessed rehearsal process

and a final performance for an invited audience with an external moderator.

Course Content

Unit 2—Performance Exams

There are two performance exams that make up 60% of the final GCSE Grade. The marks are awarded to

students based on their commitment, effort and focus during a planned 6-8 week rehearsal process and

their performance on the night to the audience. The performance on the night needs to show that students

are able to use a wide and detailed range of performance skills to communicate effectively to the

audience. The key to success in the performance exams is the rehearsal process. The assessment criteria

demands a well rehearsed piece of theatre. One of the performance exams will be a piece of theatre

created by the students from scratch, the other will be the students’ interpretation of a script.

Unit 1—Written Exam

The written exam is the students’ chance to communicate their practical exploration of Drama. There are 3

sections in the written exam:

Section A— Four short answer questions about practical work the students have personally taken

part in during the GCSE.

Section B— Two essay style questions about a play the students have studied from a practical

perspective.

Section C— An essay style review of a live piece of theatre the students have seen and studied

during the course.

The key to success in the written exam is keeping a detailed “Drama Diary” of the practical work, theatre

trips and play studied as these notes become the students’ revision notes. Quality of Written

Communication and the confident use of the language of theatre are essential to achieve the highest

grades.

English Language and English Literature English Language and English Literature

Exam Board

Students follow the EDEXCEL specification for GCSE Literature and the Cambridge IGCSE for English

Language.

This means that all students receive two GCSE qualifications in English.

Assessment & Assessment Dates

EDEXCEL Literature Controlled Assessment (completed in Year 10)

25% of the final grade is made up of two controlled assessment pieces.

IGCSE Coursework (completed in Year 10)

40% of the final grade is made up of three different written pieces.

Examinations

Edexcel Literature: There are two examinations, one worth 50% (understanding prose) and the other worth 25%

(understanding poetry) of the final grade. These exams will take place in May/June 2015.

IGCSE Language: There is one written exam, worth 40% of the final mark.

Food Technology Exam Board

AQA GCSE Food Technology

Assessment & Assessment Dates

To include all mocks, controlled assessments (does not need to be exact)

Students must complete a controlled assessment task, worth 60% of the overall GCSE, by the first week

in January.

On 1st February the Preparation sheet is sent to the school from AQA and the teacher will then have one

month to assess the information and produce a range of examination preparation information.

On 1st March the Preparation sheet can be given out to the students. Exam preparation will start in

earnest. Exam is a 2 hour paper and worth 40% of the GCSE grade.

As well as a weekly intervention session after school for all students, there will be targeted students who

will need extra sessions to secure the C or above grade.

Course Content

The course is made up of 2 units: Controlled assessment 60%, exam 40%

Controlled Assessment Unit - practical based write up started at the beginning of Year 10 and completed

by the first term of Year 11.

Exam Unit - 2 hour written exam, 25% of marks based on a particular theme, set by AQA, 75% on general

knowledge of Food—

Designing and making food products, studying nutrition and healthy eating, manufacturing of food prod-

ucts, research, health and safety and quality control, packaging and food labelling, CAD/CAM, equipment

used in food manufacturing.

TIPS FOR SUCCESS

1. Revision must be constant throughout the year and not just prior to exams. Set aside and hour a

week to revise the content you have been learning in lessons

2. High quality controlled assessment, aim to gain the maximum amount of marks for this as it is worth

60% of the overall GCSE grade

3. Attend intervention session held after school.

4. Complete as many past paper questions as possible to ensure you can answer all

types of question

Graphic Products Exam Board

AQA Design and Technology Graphics.

Assessment & Assessment Dates

Controlled Assessment

Students will be expected to produce one major project, which will constitute the controlled assessment

element. Students will be required to produce an A3 design folder and a 3D model to show their final

design.

Assessment Weighting is 60% for the controlled assignment. Controlled assessment must be handed in

no later than February 10th 2014.

Examination

The examination is 40% of the final grade. The written paper is two hours long.

Course Content

What will I be studying in Graphics?

Design and technology product graphics is a design based course that enables students to be

creative through the designing and modelling of new products and artefacts.

Students will learn new drawing and rendering techniques in order that they can express their ideas

realistically. This will involve working with new mediums such as pastels, and studio markers.

Students are also taught to develop their skills in computer-aided design and computer aided

manufacture (CAD and CAD CAM).

The particular software packages taught are, Pro-Desk top for three dimensional CAD work, sketch

up 8 and 2D Design for CAD and CAD CAM. General use of the computer is also encouraged as it

enables

students to enhance the presentation of their work.

Following the whole course develops skills such as designing, planning, problem solving

and practical skills.

The course encourages students to think for themselves, so that they are able to

organise change and adapt their strategies.

All students are encouraged to attend the intervention session planned for the

October half term.

Mock examinations will be held in December 2014 (USA 1910-1929 & Germany 1919-1991) & March

2015(Russia 1905-1924)

USA 1910-1929: —Students have completed the study of this unit. They will be examined upon it in June

2015.

Germany 1919-1991:— Students have completed their study of this unit. They will be examined upon it

in June

Russia 1905-1924:— Students have examined the situation in Russia in 1905, the character of Tsarist

rule and the reasons why the tsar was forced to abdicate in 1917. Students are still to study the two

revolutions of 1917, why the Bolsheviks gained power, the Russian Civil War and life in Russia under the

rule of Lenin and the Bolsheviks.. They will be examined on this in June 2015.

TIPS FOR SUCCESS

Additional Mathematics The Course

All students will follow the OCR linear syllabus.

Assessment

Assessment will be by one two hour written Examination

This course is being followed by all students who have already achieved a grade of A/A* at GCSE

Mathematics. It will give them a second qualification in Mathematics. It is a link between GCSE and the C1

paper at GCE.

Course Content

The course covers aspects of number, algebra, and geometry. It will particularly develop the students’ skill

in algebra by introducing concepts such as differentiation and integration.

Modern Languages: French and Spanish

AQA GCSE FRENCH 4655 and SPANISH 4695

Assessment & Assessment Dates

The GCSE French and Spanish courses test the following four skills: Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing.

Pupils will sit examinations at the end of Year 11 in Listening (20%) and Reading (20%) and will prepare two

controlled assessment tasks in Speaking (30%) and Writing (30%).

Exam dates are as follows:-

Students will also prepare further for the exams by learning vocabulary from a booklet provided and by

Unit 1 – Examination 40%

Unit 1 is externally assessed through a written examination paper of 1 hour and 30 minutes. This will contribute a

Religious Education Exam Board

WJEC GCSE Religious Studies Full Course (Specification B)

Assessment & Assessment Dates

There are no Controlled Assessments or coursework requirements for this course. The assessment will be

two external papers sat at the end of the year, each paper is worth 50% each of the full GCSE.

A mock assessment will take place every six weeks in the classroom.

The final exam dates are

Paper 1 - Life Issues 1hour 45 minutes on Monday 12th May 2014.

Paper 2 - Human Experience 1 hour 45 minutes on Wednesday 4th June 2014.

Course Content

Paper 1 comprises of four units

1. Relationships—Marriage, divorce, cohabitation, adultery, contraception, sex, family, love.

2. Our World—Creation, environment, stewardship, animal rights.

3. Looking for meaning—The nature of God, death, afterlife, faith.

4. Is it Fair? - Prejudice, discrimination, charity, wealth, injustice.

Paper 2 comprises of four units

1. Religion and Conflict—War and Peace, reconciliation.

2. Religion and Medicine—Embryology, transplants, IVF, euthanasia, abortion, suicide, quality and the sanctity

of life.

3. Religious Expression– Pilgrimage, interfaith dialogue, pilgrimage, symbolism.

4. Authority - Religion and the State – Law, community, conscience, human rights, justice, duty.

The themes outlines will be focusing on Christianity and Islam only.

If you use books and websites independently ensure you cover Islam and Christianity on only the ten

Resistant Materials Exam Board

AQA Design and Technology Resistant Materials

Assessment & Assessment Dates

Students must complete a controlled assessment task which consists of a design folder worth 40% of the

GCSE and a practical piece worth 20%. The design folder and practical outcome must be completed by

February 2016 .

The examination which is a 2 hour paper is worth 40% of the GCSE. The mock examination will be taken

in January.

The theme for the design questions in the examination is issued to students in March 2015

There will be weekly intervention sessions aimed at aiding the completion of the controlled assessments.

Course Content

In the controlled assessments students learn how to design products for a client of their choice. They

must research existing products and endeavour to be as creative as possible in their ideas. They will also

learn different practical techniques and processes when carrying out practical work, with the aim of

producing a product that is finished to a professional standard. Students are also required to test the

product against the original specification and carry out a detailed evaluation of its performance.

These design processes are also needed for the examination, where design questions are set to test a

students creativity and knowledge .

They will learn about materials, tools and processes and gain knowledge on the developing ways in which

designers and engineers are endeavouring to protect the environment.

Tips to achieve the best grades. Ensure that the design folder and practical work is completed

to the highest possible standard and that all sections of the portfolio are completed. Practise designing by

sketching out five creative designs for different objects. Attend all of the intervention classes.

Students will sit exams at the end of Year 11. Students will sit numerous assessments during the school

year.

Practice Assessments to be held Week Beginning: 12th October, 14th December and 8th February

Controlled Assessments were started by students at the end of Year 10. They will be finished in I

ntervention afterschool prior to October half term.

Mock exams will be held straight after Easter—week beginning 11th April

End of Year exam dates: Biology — 17th May 16, Chemistry 1—19th May 16, Physics 1—25th May 16

Course Content

The course is made up of 4 units each worth 25%:

Controlled Assessment Unit —Practical based write up. All classes completed first drafts in class at the

end of year ten and will complete their assignments afterschool before October half term.

Biology 1: Core Unit— Influences on Life: Classification, variation and inheritance, Responses to a

changing environment, and problems and solutions to a changing environment

Chemistry 1: Core Unit— Chemistry in our world: The Earth's sea and atmosphere, Materials from earth,

Acids, Obtaining and using metals, Fuels.

Physics 2: Core Unit— Universal Physics: Visible Light and the Solar System, The Electromagnetic Spec-

trum, Waves and the Universe, Waves and the earth, Generation and Transmission of Electricity.

TIPS FOR SUCCESS

1. Revision must be constant throughout the year and not just prior to exams. Set aside and hour a

week to revise the content you have been learning in lessons

2. Complete all homework set—homework will not only help you recap key knowledge but also learn

Students sit their theory exams at the end of Year 11, this is a 2 hour paper.

Controlled Assessment will be completed by February 2014 with the make being completed by the end of

December 2013.

Mock exam period will be held in Spring 2 (March 2014)

Course Content

The course is made up of 2 units. The controlled assessment is worth 60% and the theory exam is worth

40%

Controlled Assessment Unit — This consists of an A3 portfolio of Research, designs, development ,

testing and evaluations there is also a made product to compliment the folder from a series of tasks sent

from the exam board.
