How Time Flies
How fast time flies! I’m sure that’s what a lot of parents/carers of Year 12 students are thinking now. It must seem like
yesterday they were sending their child off to school for the first time and now they are seeing them complete their High
School education in readiness for what the future might hold. For their last few days of school the students enjoyed
dressing up in various costumes. There was a “Farewell to Year 12” Social which was a great night. Year 12 had a
“Where’s Wally” theme and “Gender Bender” was the theme for other students (some pretty scary looking girls). The Year
12 Breakfast and Final Assembly was held on Wednesday 21st September with a large gathering of family and friends. A
big thank you to Ms Rossini and the Year 11 Hospitality for a fantastic breakfast. Year 12 now have two weeks of school
holidays before commencing the HSC formal exams on Thursday October 13th (lucky for some). The Year 12 Formal will
be held on Tuesday 8th November at the Nambucca Heads RSL. This is the final event for the students as part of
Nambucca Heads High School. NHHS would like to wish all students the best of luck with their exams. Do some study
over the holidays, but remember to also take some time to relax.

Principal’s Report
Dear Parents and Community
This week we said farewell to the Year 12 class of 2016. On Tuesday we had the Farewell to Year 12
social followed by the Year 12 Breakfast and Final Assembly on Wednesday. Completing thirteen years
of formal education is an achievement of which to be proud. Attaining your HSC is acknowledged as a
key factor in the development of a young person’s skills and knowledge. Congratulations Year 12 of
2016 and all the best in your HSC examinations.
To all students, thank you for your efforts this term. Enjoy your holidays and I look forward to seeing you
all back on Monday 10th October.
Highlight of the fortnight:
The final assembly for our Year 12 Class of 2016. As a high school teacher I truly believe that our job is all about producing fine
young men and women who will be good citizens for our community. As Ms Lockyer and Mrs Nowland read the roll out for the
final time and the students came up to be presented with their final school report it was a pleasure to see another cohort of fine
young men and women from Nambucca Heads High School officially finish their high school education and take that first step
into adulthood.
As always please contact me at the school with any queries as to your child’s education.

Mercedes Peterkin, a former student at NHHS, completed Year 12 in 2015. Mercedes studied Visual Art and had her work
selected to be part of the ArtExpress Exhibition (the annual exhibition of Higher School Certificate Visual Arts bodies of work)
and has now had her work selected as part of the Wilkins Award. William Wilkins was the first head of the Department of
Education in New South Wales. He arrived in Australia in
1851 and for the next 30 years was education’s leading
figure, leaving an indelible legacy of vision and quality. In
the early years of the new colony William Wilkins
emphasised the value of drawing and visual arts in the
education of New South Wales students. The collection
was named in his honour in 1984. The Department of
Education purchases approximately ten new bodies of
work from students exhibiting in ArtExpress . The Arts Unit
coordinates the purchase of works for the Wilkins
Collection. This is a fantastic honour for Mercedes. This
will mean that her work could be requested by a number of
large companies to be displayed in their buildings, some
have even ended up on display overseas. We would like to
congratulate Mercedes on her ongoing success.
Once again this year NHHS had a number of students travel to
Homebush, Sydney, to compete in the State Athletics carnival. All
students came away from the carnival with exceptional results. Ted
Wikaira placed 6th in the State in the 200m with a PB, Isaac Hodnett-Daly
placed 8th in the State in the 110m hurdles with a PB, Ethan Hocking
placed 8th in the State in the 400m with a PB, Olivia Langley placed 9th in
the State in 3000m, James Weimer placed 5th in his heat of the 400m
also in a PB. The 15 years boys placed 13th in the relay with another PB.
Congratulations to all students on a mighty effort to reach this level of
competition.

D & T HSC Projects
Three students completed D & T as part of their HSC this year. The works are of a very high standard and Mr Hazelwood is
exceptionally pleased with the effort from the students. Markers from the Board of Studies have been into the school and
appraised the works.
Levi Griffiths produced an attachment for a ride on
lawn mover. His father has specific needs and this
will enable him the flexibility to pick up sticks and
other rubbish without getting on and off the mower.
Prototypes of the finished product had to be
produced with some pieces being made on the 3D
printer.
Sophie Blair’s wall hangings were inspired by
stained glass she admired during her recent trip
to Italy. Using the technique of paper coiling and
quilling the pieces are made of shredded
recycled paper.
Sharna-Lee Martin created a
glass topped coffee table
inspired by the books “Game of
Thrones”. The decorations on
the legs and the Coats of Arms
on the top of the table were
produced using the 3D printer
to decorate the table.
