Take a Moment:

How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world.” ANNE FRANK

Tēnā koutou katoa ngā whānau,

On Wednesday we marked the beginning of the Lenten season with our Ash Wednesday Liturgy. The theme for this year’s Lenten season is ‘Renewed by the Spirit’. Pope Francis challenges us all to be transformed and renewed by the Spirit so that we can follow the path of love, when we do this we become God’s ambassadors on Earth. Pope Francis’s words encourage us to reflect on the significance of Lent and the Journey each of us travel in our preparation for Easter. As a school community we are called to travel the Lenten Journey together, to support each other and together bring about change and be Christ in the lives of others.

Our Annual Colours Assembly celebrates the success of our students from 2019 in Level 1,2,3 NCEA who gained Maroon Colours and Gold Endorsed colours for their outstanding academic achievement. To all of those students congratulations - you set yourselves goals and worked so hard to fulfil them. You are role models to those coming along through the years behind you of what can be achieved with this commitment to your learning. Thank you to Matua Simon Pimm, Head of Faculty Languages, for his personal account of his life long journey of learning. He demonstrated to the students the need to ‘dig deep’ and find the resilience to persevere and find the people around you and opportunities that give you the support you need to make the learn-ing happen.

After wide consultation with students, staff, Board of Trustees, Parents and community our strategic plan for the next 3 years has been established and is set in the diagram below. Three main goals of Ako - Learning, Wairua Ora - Well being and Whanaungatanga - Community. We are excited to be mov-ing forward with goals that we believe have come strongly from the direction of all involved with the school and look forward to working hard to progress these to enhance all that is already great about our College. Given the goals are shared we invite your participation in achieving them.

In the coming weeks we have a few opportunities where I would like to welcome and encourage you to join us at school. These opportunities are to strengthen your knowledge of the school and the commitments we make to move forward collaboratively with you.

Firstly our Year 9 Parent evening next week 4 Wednesday March 5.30pm. This evening is to give all Year 9 parents the opportunity to hear key messages relevant to their child settling into learning and life in Garin, and messages that will support you in how to use the parent portal, how to view our two weekly Te Aho reports and why these are significant to tracking progress of your student. Most importantly it gives us some time to experi-ence kanohi te kanohi - face to face connection with class teachers to hear the expectations in each subject area, to see the classrooms where your child attends each day. Teachers will outline the mahi they are doing with each class. We look forward to this and know from previous meetings that parents find it a great opportunity to meet other parents but also to feel like they really know what is happening for their child at Garin.

The other opportunity I want to encourage as many as possible to attend is our Whānau Wellbeing Evening.

We have some expert providers NZIWR (New Zealand Institute of Wellbeing and Resilience) supporting our school on how to enhance Well being for us all - students, whānau groups, whole school, staff and community. In establishing why this is such a need for us all, the collective input of all will inform how we move toward this goal. We want to establish a model of well being that is unique to the needs and values of our community. Through this meeting you support us and your child to collectively build the Wairua Ora for Garin College.

Our Lenten Journey Begins

With Ash Wednesday this week, we enter the season of Lent. The theme for this year is Renewed by the Spirit, Kua Whakahoutia e te Wairua. “God wants to speak to the world by your life…… do not abandon the path of love” [Gaudete et Exsultate, Pope Francis].

In Gaudete et Exsultate, Pope Francis explains what it means to

be renewed. God sets us on a path in the world. We are called to

live God’s commandment to love and serve one another as Jesus

loves and serves us. Over time we can get weighed down by dis-

tractions, temptations, doubt, grief and suffering. To be renewed

by the Spirit is to encounter God and allow Him to guide us, giving

us strength to live out our journey of faith. In our renewal we can

reach out with hope and love to those in need.

Yr13 Journey Camp

With Lake Rotoiti camp over and done, we year 13’s feel as though we are moving into the next stage in our lives. This being our last camp, it felt to many of us to be the last time that we would all come together as a year group to challenge ourselves and each other to push our boundaries and to have a good time. I think that it is safe to say that coming back from this camp we all feel as though we are a closer, more tight-knit group. Challenges such as raft racing, kayaking, search and rescue and bush skills kept us busy during the days, and reflection in the evenings led by our teachers helped us to look back on how these activities and the friends we made while doing them would be memories that we would look back on in the future. This reflection time also allowed us to consider how despite the fact that at the end of this year we will all be traveling on the different journey’s that God has chosen for us, we will always be connected by the experiences that we have had at Garin. We owe all of this to our teachers and the staff at Whenua Iti, without whom we wouldn’t have been able to have these amazing experiences. These are surely experiences that will live on in our memories forever. Written by:Tegan Fleming
