Year 2 SATs Meeting

Miss Samuels

Year Group Leader

What are SATs?

• SATs are standardised assessment tests which are administered to year 2 and year 6 pupils during the summer term. They take place over the course of a week during May.

• We will ensure the children are fully prepared for the tests with dedicated time set aside to practice the skill of answering test questions.

• The SATs form one part of the teacher’s judgement when

assessing whether your child is working towards the expected standard, at or at greater depth standard in Reading, Writing and Maths.

Grammar Punctuation

and Spelling (non-

statutory)

How are the SATs administered?

• We do not want the SATs to be stressful for the children so we try

our best to put them at ease. • The class teacher or Senior Leaders administer the test. • Some of the children will sit the tests in classrooms; others will take

the tests in smaller groups outside of the classroom. • We will provide the children with plenty of breaks and they are not

strictly timed.

• The tests are carefully planned to take place over a few weeks in May 2019. Children requiring special arrangements such as needing more time or needing a scribe will be catered for.

• The reading test for Year 2 pupils is made up of two separate papers. Paper 1 consists of a selection of texts of 400 to 700 words and a set of questions. Paper 2 is a reading booklet with various passages of 800 to 1100 words.

• Questions are designed to assess the

comprehension and understanding of a child’s reading.

• There are different question types including multiple choice, labelling, matching, ordering, ‘find and copy’, short answer and open-ended answer.

The tests will get progressively more difficult towards the end of the test. Teachers will have the option to stop the test at any

point if they feel that it is appropriate for a particular child.

Reading

• Read regularly with and to your child. • Be a positive role model of a ‘reader’(variety of texts). • Use the school library to borrow a range books • Ask them lots of questions about what they have read -

Prediction, Summarising, Inference, Deducing, finding evidence from text and looking for key vocabulary

• Encourage your children to read a variety of fiction, poetry and non-fiction books.

• The maths assessment will consist of two papers. Paper 1 covers arithmetic and takes around 15 minutes. Paper 2 covers mathematical fluency, problem-solving and reasoning, and takes around 35 minutes.

• In Paper 2 there are a variety of question types: multiple choice, matching, true/false, completing a chart/table or drawing a shape. Children are not allowed to use any manipulatives during the test.

Maths

• The arithmetic paper consists of 25 questions. The arithmetic questions have no context just calculations. Pupils write their answers onto the sheet.

• This paper will test your child on their knowledge of the four operations - addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. The questions are all in number sentences, with no word problems.

• Questions gradually get harder towards the end of the test.

Arithmetic

• The reasoning paper includes about 30 questions and takes about 35 minutes. The paper will test your child on their ability to apply their Maths skills to various problems and puzzles.

• They will be tested on all four operations, fractions, measurement, geometry and statistics. The children are not allowed to use any Maths equipment during the tests. They can draw though! The tests are not strictly timed.

Reasoning

• Play times tables games (2,3,5,10) • Play mental maths games including counting in different amounts, forwards and backwards. • Encourage opportunities for telling the time. • Encourage opportunities for counting coins and money e.g. finding amounts or calculating change when shopping. • Look for examples of 2D and 3D shapes around the home and environment. • Identify, weigh or measure quantities and amounts in the kitchen or in recipes.

How to help your child with Maths

• Children will also sit a Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar test.

SPAG

• The Spelling test tests the children’s spelling from Phase 2 - Phase 6 (from

• The tests are marked in school by the class teacher and securely stored away.

• The children’s results will be used by teachers as part of their ongoing assessment of pupils. The SATs are only one piece of evidence supporting the teacher’s judgement.

• The children’s raw scores are standardised or "scaled" across the whole country so the average score nationally is fixed to be 100. This means if your child has a "scaled score" higher than 100 they are doing better than average in Maths, Reading etc . This varies from year to year on how many marks children need to achieve to reach the expected standard.

What happens next?

• Writing will be assessed through looking at the children’s ongoing writing work, both in English lessons and cross curricular Topic writing such as Science, Geography, History or RE.

• The class teacher will use their judgment to say whether your child is working towards the expected level, at expected level or at greater depth for writing.

Writing

• Encourage creativity and imagination drawing on their reading! • Encourage your child to write at home, always be positive about their efforts but point out a

couple of ideas of where they could improve. • Cursive Handwriting • Work on the target areas suggested at Parents’ Evening. • Pick up on spellings and ensure children are confident spelling the Year 2 Common Exception

Words as well as applying their weekly spelling rules taught in phonics.

How to help your child with writing

• We will be sending home practice reading, arithmetic

and reasoning papers for you to work through together

with your child during the Easter holidays in

preparation.

Practice Papers

Teacher Assessment Frameworks

• The TAF were sent home on Parents Evening highlighting the standards children need to meet for Working Towards the Expected Standard, At the Expected Standard or at Greater Depth.

• The standard given to your child at the end of the year

will be informed using a range of evidence from their class books, not just their performance in the SATs so if children do not perform to their best ability in the test, the teacher’s judgements can be used.

• Children are also assessed at working towards expected standard in Science or Working at the Expected Standard Science. This is based on their class work over time and is not tested.

• Living Things and their Habitats

• Animals Including Humans

• Plants

• Use of Every Materials

Science

• You can help by… • Ensuring that your child has outstanding attendance and punctuality throughout the

year • Sufficient rest and a healthy balanced diet. • Support at home with reading, spellings, times tables • Liaise with school if you have any issues/concerns at any point • Support your child to understand that we all want them to do their best, but

reassure them that there isn’t anything to worry about. They won’t even know they are doing them!
