Read Mr Whoop’s writing carefully to spot his spelling mistakes. Use the Yr 3/4 Spelling list to check the

spellings and create a checklist where you can show him how he should practise each mistake.

Topic: Happy Healthy Me!

Week 3

I can use pencil shading techniques.

Art – KS2a- to create sketch books to record their observations and use them to review and revisit ideas

KS2b- to improve their mastery of art and design techniques including drawing, painting and sculpture with a range of materials Art SP: Use each drawing tool with variety and control. Learn to use single media with variety in a drawing.

Art – 1 hour This week you are going to use observational skills to develop your sketching and drawing skills. You will need to gather a variety of fruits (or vegetables) to create a healthy still-life to draw! Group this in an attractive arrangement on a flat surface near where you are working. The art skill you will be most focussing on is shading which is an art technique to show how light or dark an object is. You will need to look very carefully at your still-life and observe:

- the shape, size and form of each fruit - how each of the fruits sit next to, behind or in front of the other fruit - how the light source creates light and shadow on the fruit which gives it its realistic

3D appearance. Where is there light hitting the object? Where are the shadows? To add different shades you will need to practise using different pressure control with your pencil.

These still-lifes drawn in pencil show reflections of light and dark shadows fruit and in the shadows. The eraser (rubber) technique adds highlights to show light reflected on the smooth surfaces.

In Maths this week, you will be learning about horizontal and vertical lines which need to be drawn with a ruler to be accurate. However, fruit and vegetables are all organic which means they all have soft edges and you will therefore need to draw free-hand (this means without a ruler or stencil to help you). Watch the following videos for some tips on how to create shading using your pencil.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-WR-FyUQc6I Task: You will need some plain paper (instead of your sketchbook), a sharp pencil and sharpener, a rubber and a flat surface to work on. Begin by practising creating different shades by changing the pressure you apply to your pencil (look below). Try to keep an even pressure for each shade and gradually press harder as you make each shade darker. Then, carefully sketch your still-life. Remember to sketch out your still-life lightly first so you can adapt or improve your drawing before you add shading.

Plenary: evaluate the accuracy of your drawing. Did you remember to keep looking as you were drawing? Explain to some-one two things you did to improve your sketching skills.

I can use charcoal shading techniques. Art –KS2a- to create sketch books to record their observations and use them to review and revisit ideas KS2b- to improve their mastery of art and design techniques including drawing, painting and sculpture with a range of materials Art SP: Develop skills in placing forms to make a pleasing composition Begin to explore differentiation regarding position, size proportion and distance between forms in the picture plane

Art – 1 hour Re-cap on your learning from shading with pencil. How did you achieve different shades by using just one pencil? How does light on an object change if you move an object? What did you need to do to make sure your drawing of fruit was accurate? Today, you will learn about another drawing tool which can capture light and shade to create an effective 3D effect: charcoal. Watch the following videos to see how shading can be achieved using charcoal.

Task: As you may not have charcoal at home, you can use some of the techniques above

with pencil to develop your drawing skills. Set up a small still-life of fruit. Use your pencil on its

side to shade a large area to work on. Then use your pencil to draw out your fruit on top of

this: watch this video for tips! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YBji8B0hmAQ

Look carefully for light areas on the fruit and use a rubber to remove some of the shading to

create these areas. The more you remove, the lighter the shade. Then add darker shades

using the side of your pencil to create the shadows on the fruit and the table. Try to create

lots of change in shades. The harder you press, the darker your shade will be.

Keep looking back at your still-life, adding more detail as you go.

I can research and design a product. D&T – Design KS2a use research and develop design criteria to inform the design of innovative, functional, appealing products that are fit for purpose, aimed at particular individuals or groups Evaluate KS2a investigate and analyse a range of existing products Cooking and nutrition KS2a: Understand and apply the principles of a healthy and varied diet

DT – 1 hour 30

This week, you will try research existing dips from different countries around the world, try different dips and then design and make your own. Healthy dips are a perfect way to try new flavours with crudites (raw, fresh sliced vegetables and salad). Research several global dips and decide which ingredients you would like to try to combine to make your own unique dip, such as: Guacamole – Mexico

When might you enjoy dips? What could you serve with dips? What dips have you tried before? Which ones do you like? Why? How do you think making a dip is a good way to eat good nutrients? Why is it important to use a variety of coloured foods? Who will you make it for; adults or children? Think how you will present your dips and crudites so it is attractive for your target audience. Are there any food allergies you should be aware of? Task: (use the template provided if needed) Design your own healthy dip for crudites, bread sticks or pitta bread. Think carefully about what ingredients you would like to include and the cooking skills you will need to use (chopping, slicing, grating, mashing, mixing, measuring- see below). Draw your design, add colour and label it clearly and include the cooking skills you will use. List the ingredients you will use. Now name your healthy dip.

I can make a healthy dip. D&T – Cooking and nutrition- KS2b-Prepare and cook a variety of predominantly savoury dishes and use a range of cooking techniques KS2c -Understand seasonality, and know where and how a variety of ingredients are grown, reared, caught and processed

DT - 1 hour Remember to follow health and safety when cooking or preparing food. Ask an adult to help you cut, slice and grate vegetables. Keep your cooking area clean and tidy as you work and present your food in an attractive way. Remember to help wash up at the end!

Task: Collect your tools and ingredients on a clean surface. Use your design and ingredients to make your dip and crudites.

Cooking skills progression techniques:

Whisking

Grating cheese

Glazing

trimming and finely chopping(e.g. spring onions)

claw and bridge techniques of harder foods (e.g. swede, carrots, potatoes)

unassisted measuring of liquid ingredients Gauging quantities (thinking about portions of ingredients used, e.g. amount of salt etc.) Once prepared, taste your dip using the crudites or bread sticks and allow others to share with you. Remember to take photos for the blog if you can!

I can evaluate a healthy dip. D&T – Evaluate:KS2a - investigate and analyse a range of existing products KS2b- their own ideas and products against their own design criteria and consider the views of others to improve their work.

DT - 30 mins Once you have made and tasted or shared your dip, you need to evaluate how successful it was. Task: Answer the questions below in your book. What cooking skills did you use successfully? Why? What did you find easy or tricky? Why? What did you like about your dip? What would you change? What did others think of your presentation?
