Weekly Writing Tasks (Aim to do 1 per day)
• UNDER THE SEA STORY TASK - Write an
under the sea adventure story. You could try using this story starter:
Story starter!
The majestic creature glided gracefully through the perfect, azure
waters. Its size and beautiful colours stood out in stark
contrast to the murky, grey ocean floor beneath. Many other
creatures that dwelt under the sea looked on with envy at the
unusual and startlingly bright colours that its appearance possessed…
Story starter!
For hundreds of years they had been sleeping. The ocean had been their home since that terrible day, when they had been
banished to this prison of endless ocean. Now that they had been rediscovered, the time for waiting was at an end. The
divers were shocked when they saw the colossal, stone giants begin to stir in the water. It was time…
• POETRY – https://childrens.poetryarchive.org/collections/under-the-sea/
Can you compose your own poem of what you wish you could do if you were a
sea creature or lived under the sea? Why not perform it to the family or upload
onto our Facebook page for others to enjoy too.
• ENDANGERED SEA CREATURES – write a description of an
endangered sea creature or a sea creature of your choice. You may
wish to do a little research of your own first to help you with your
details. https://www.natgeokids.com/au/?s=oceans&post_type=
• BECOME A REPORTER – how are we endangering creatures and
plants of the ocean? How can we help to protect them? You could
write a newspaper article, design a poster or create a news report to tell us how
we are endangering animals of the ocean and what we can do to help save them.
• INFORMATION PAGE – Choose a creature of the ocean to write a fact file that
includes subheadings, key information and possibly some pictures. You may need
to do a little research to help you. You could tell us about their: habitats,
appearance, diet, behaviour and then some fun facts or extra information you
have learned about your chosen creature.
• REMEMEBER you must read your work to check it! It is a good idea to reread
every sentence when you have finished writing each one.
REMEMBER you can upload your work onto Facebook.

Diary Write your own diary entry and try to include the success criteria!
Dear Diary
I have been working from home for ten weeks now, with the occasional shift to
look after the key worker children at Birchfield Primary. On Monday all the teachers
returned to school for an Inset day, where Mr Culham, Mrs Parker and Miss Walker
talked us through all the new safety measures for the gradual return of our
Birchfield children. They had done a great job of organising the school so that we
can socially distance and keep everyone safe! There is a one way system around
the school, which is marked out with arrows. There are lots of colourful dots on
the playground to help each group play safely with their adult. Also, many more
things had been put in place, so we all felt reassured and ready for action! I felt
excited, but I couldn’t help feeling a little anxious at first.
In Ms Stringer’s words, “Nerves soon turned to smiles!”
Everyone had such a wonderful day! It was really lovely to see the children!
Whilst waiting at the gate on Wednesday morning, Mr Culham remarked, “It makes
me so happy to hear children in their classrooms again and see them playing safely
outside!” Even in these very unusual times, people are being so positive! As I
stood at the gate waiting for my group to arrive, the father of a reception child told
Mr Culham how impressed he was with our school and what a great day his child
had had on Tuesday! It was lovely to hear! Now, I’m looking forward to seeing
more and more children return to school as we systematically inch our way back to
normality.
Here are some ideas of the things you might like to write about –
• Start by writing a general comment of how your week was
• Write about what has made this week special
• Write about how someone made you smile or feel happy
• Write about something you are looking forward to
Success Criteria:
Punctuation: try to include speech marks “Welcome!” said Mr Culham.
Compound conjunctions: (FANBOYS) for, and, nor, but, or, yet, and so
Expanded noun phrases with preposition; under, behind, before, between, next to
Time connectives; then, after, when, before, while
To include ‘drop clause’ (relative clauses); ,who ,which ,where
Statements. Questions? Commands! Exclamations!
Hello Everyone! I hope that you have had another good week, and that you have
managed to find time to write your diary. This week has been a very important milestone,
not just for me, but for everyone at Birchfield Primary School.
![Page 11: YEAR 3 Summer Term Week 7 HIDDEN JEWELS OF THE OCEAN€¦ · – by doing these 5 times a week you will get better and better! • Hit the Button - Play on Hit the Button each day,](https://reader033.vdocument.in/reader033/viewer/2022042400/5f0ee67a7e708231d4417d91/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
Topic Learning Project – to choose different tasks to complete each
day throughout the week.
The project this week aims to provide opportunities for you to learn about our oceans and what
lives below the surface. It is also an opportunity for you to think about how we are affecting the
lives of the creatures and plants that live there.
• Working Together to Save Our Oceans - The BBC programme Blue Planet 2
sparked an outcry about the health of our oceans and the
huge threat caused by plastics, but lots of people around
the world are working hard to help solve this problem.
Find out about Madison Edwards, a 12-year-old environmental
activist – who has become well known and for what reasons?
TASK: Keep a ‘plastic diary’ recording how much single-use plastic your family
uses. At the end of the week – think about how you could help reduce plastic
waste – write down one thing that you will do.
• Speeding Through The Seas – Find out some fun facts about the fastest animals
of the sea. You could think about where these animals are usually located. Can
you find out 10 of the top fastest creatures and where they can be found?
• The Ocean’s Weirdest Creatures - Among the ocean’s countless species, some
stand out for their looks—but not always in a good way. Discover some of
the sea’s most unusual-looking animals and draw or write about a few.
https://www.natgeokids.com/uk/discover/animals/sea-life/strange-sea-creatures/ https://answersingenesis.org/kids/sea-animals/
• Reef Research - The Great Barrier Reef is the only living thing which is visible
from space! Take a virtual tour of the reef using AirPano and
create a poster or video to promote the Great Barrier Reef. Use
scientific language relating to the habitats and species groups
found in the reef. Can you identify the main threats to The Great
Barrier Reef and include these too?
https://www.airpano.com/360photo/Great-Barrier-Reef-Australia/
https://attenboroughsreef.com/experience_intro.php
• Plastic Ocean Artwork - Use plastic to make sea creatures,
watch a thought-provoking videoclip from the film
‘A Plastic Ocean’, and create a piece of artwork
using plastic that portrays a powerful message.
Remember to post up your work on Facebook.
CHALLENGE: Can you think of five things you can do to help save the
coral reefs? You could present this in the form of an ART MURAL or a
POSTER – let your creativity run wild!
![Page 12: YEAR 3 Summer Term Week 7 HIDDEN JEWELS OF THE OCEAN€¦ · – by doing these 5 times a week you will get better and better! • Hit the Button - Play on Hit the Button each day,](https://reader033.vdocument.in/reader033/viewer/2022042400/5f0ee67a7e708231d4417d91/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)

2. Go for a walk and see how many different flowers / insects and wildlife you can spot – you could even upload your pictures onto our Facebook.
3. Visit BBC BITESIZE using the internet or on the TV (Sky and Digital are
showing them) and choose a video to watch and learn from. 4. Be a designer – using old items of clothing or material found around the home
to create your very own garden bunting. 5. Get organised and sort your bedroom out – whether this is clearing out the
junk or simply tidying your bedroom or rearranging it. 6. Research card tricks and impress your family with a few of them – you could
upload the tricks you have mastered on Facebook too. 7. Create a ‘Covid-19 Lock down’ mural to send to your loved ones to show that

FEELINGS COME AND GO: remember that we are all in this together. Sometimes we
find that the moment or the event takes control on our emotions and actions. Be
kind to yourself…take a break and walk away from the situation. Listen to music
quietly or read a book that you can get lost in. Allow yourself time to calm down
before going back. It is okay to feel negative at times – this is hard for everyone
and you are not alone – but you must remember that these feelings of negativity or
even anger will pass and fade if you allow yourself the time to be kind to yourself.
ENJOY EACH OTHER: being unable to go out and see our friends and relatives has
been hard – and we are still facing a few more weeks at least of school closure.
You cannot change this – but what you can do is try to make sure that every day
you do something together. Create FAMILY FUN + ENJOYABLE RITUALS so that even
when you are in lockdown you can still look back on these positive memories.
Whether it’s: going for a walk or a bike ride together; baking in the kitchen; playing
a board game; holding a sports day in the garden; watching a movie together or
simply reading a book together these are all moments where you together can build
happy memories.
Other ways that might help to calm you when you are feeling negatively:
1. Sing out loud. Everyone knows the sweet relief associated with rocking out to
your favourite tune. But the physical act of singing out loud, even if it is off
key, has been shown to release endorphins, the “feel good” chemical in the
brain. So sing and shout it out!
2. Go for a run. Running has been shown to reduce negative feelings. Going for
a 10 minute jog around the garden can not only improve your mood
immediately, it will also help you to cope with our feelings for several hours
afterward.
3. Go to your calm down space. Having a designated “Calm Down Space” in
your home allows you to feel take a break and re-join the group when you feel
ready to. Don’t forget to make it comfortable and colourful – it is your safe
space not a prison cell!
4. Take a colouring break. Trust me it gives you something to focus on, and can
be a great mindfulness activity that reduces any anxiety you are feeling.
