MAKING SHADOW ART

What you will need:

* a small pouch to keep pebbles in

* Leaves, sticks and other nature items

* Paint or markers

* Sunshine!!

*

What you need to do:

1. First you will need to collect some rocks and pebbles. You might have some at

home or you can go on a nature walk! Rocks with a smooth or flat surface are best

to work with.

2. Clean your rocks and while you wait for them to dry think about a design for them. Acrylic paints work well but

you can also use permanent markers.

3. Decorate your rocks! These will be used as facial features so you need eyes, noses, mouths, eyebrows, ears and

whatever else you like.

4. Choose a sunny day and put your rocks in a pouch. The ideal time is when the sun isn’t directly overhead.

Depending on the time of day the shadows may be bigger or smaller. You might find it interesting to experiment

with time of day.

5. Gather some leaves, sticks, petals, grass or other nature items

that you can find.

6. Create your own shadow art. One person will need to cast

the shadow and the other person can add the features using

the decorated rocks.

7. Once you have finished you can pop the rocks away and

use them another day!

CREATE YOUR OWN WILDLIFE HABITAT

Do you have some space in your garden, a balcony or nature strip to create a habitat for the local wildlife such as

a bird bath for them?

LETTER WRITING ACTIVITY

September 1st was World Letter Writing Day! Take this opportunity to write an informal letter to a friend or family member.

Remember to include your address, so they can write back to you and the date as some letters take ages to arrive!

Some things you might want to include in your letter: Something(s) you have learnt during home-schooling, good/bad

things about lockdown, things that help you stay positive that they could try doing, movies you have seen; books that

you have read, a drawing of an animal or other artwork you have done.

Put it in an envelope with the person's name and address. Then drop off the letter to their letterbox if they live close or

ask an adult to get you a stamp then walk to the post box to mail it.

SCIENCE MEETS ART

In this activity, we use chemistry to make different coloured dyes or watercolour paints.

YOU WILL NEED:

¼ Red Cabbage

Acid (Vinegar, lemon or other)

Alkali (Laundry detergent or other)

1. Cut/rip the Red Cabbage into small pieces, squash into a jar/container and add just enough hot water to

almost cover the cabbage (use the hottest water you can safely use). Cover with a lid and place in the sun

until the water turns dark purple/blue. (1 hour to 1 day, depending on how hot the water is.)

2. Collect the coloured water, squeeze as much as you can from the cabbage, and divide into five or more

samples (use cups or a patti-cake tin or …).

3. It’s time to experiment. To the first sample add a little acid (maybe a teaspoon) and mix. What happens?

Keep experimenting with different amounts of acid or alkali to make colours that you like. Do you notice a

pattern?

4. When you are happy with your colours, it’s time for art. Your have some choices: A) just start painting with your

watercolour, B) Add honey or corn-starch to thicken and then paint, or C) dye an old T-shirt or other fabric.

There are so many great websites to explain what’s going on, try this one:
