Writing challengeYour writing challenge this week is to create an 'inspired' piece of writing based on the short film, 'A new hue'.

A non-chronological report about Blot

Have another look at the character of Blot. He is a very cute blob of ink!

You could write a NCR all about this strange creature using sub-headings like:- Habitat- Diet- Personality- Appearance

Remember to use technical vocabulary and a formal tone, as if you are a scientist!

A newspaper report about the event for 'The Paper Times'

You could pretend that you are a journalist for 'The Paper Times' newspaper. This could be Liy's local newspaper and as soon as the colourful patch was noticed, perhaps Lily became a local celebrity!

Don't forget to use:- A headline- A introduction paragraph with the 5W's- Quotes from people interviewed (using correct speech punctuation)- A paragraph at the end discussing the future

A story based on the video

After watching the video, write a story based on the events. As it is quite a short video, you will need to think about the characters and give them more of a backstory that can be totally up to you!

Don't forget to use your ISPACE openers with a comma and lots of lovely expanded noun phrases!

Inquiry – Let's make a TV show!

This week, we're going to have a go at producing our own episode of the TV show 'ROOM 101'.

In ROOM 101, three contestants each have to suggest something that they don't like, which they think should be banished from the world forever. It is their job to convince the host, using persuasive arguments, that their thing should be banished. At the end of the show, one thing is 'banished' to ROOM 101, and the person who suggested it is the winner!

For one example, please click the link below to see why Aisling Bea wants to banish pigeons to ROOM 101.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cGnMsMc5764

Page 22: Year 4 Home Learning!€¦ · 'inspired' piece of writing based on the short film, 'A new hue'. A non-chronological report about Blot Have another look at the character of Blot. He

Here's what YOU need to do if you would like to join in!

Step one – Think of something that annoys you. What would you like to see banished to ROOM 101 forever? Be creative!

Step two – Research the thing that annoys you.Find out as much as you can about the thing that annoys you. This will allow you to make a more convincing argument for putting into ROOM 101. You may even discover more things that you do not like about it!

Step three – Write a persuasive argument for banishing your thing. What would you like to see banished to ROOM 101 forever? Be creative!

Step four – Record yourself reading / performing your argument for a camera.Remember to send this to Mr Barker if you would like to be included in our television show!

Page 23: Year 4 Home Learning!€¦ · 'inspired' piece of writing based on the short film, 'A new hue'. A non-chronological report about Blot Have another look at the character of Blot. He

Step One – What annoys you?As a super-positive bunch of people, you may find it tricky to think of something that annoys you. Never-fear! Maybe you could gain some inspiration from the ideas below. If you already have ideas, go ahead and use them! You can rant about anything you like, so long as it's not intentionally offensive.

We did a whole project around climate-science this year. Is there something about the climate-crisis, or pollution, which really grinds your gears? Or, possibly, the way that it's handled annoys you? Maybe a fall in animal populations gets you mad?

Technology, the subject of one of this year's projects, can be very divisive. Should video-games be banished to Room 101? Maybe old technology annoys you, or maybe certain things your parents will/won't let you use makes you feel annoyed, and you'd like to vent about it?

Have you seen something in the newsYou're passionate about?

Let that passion become a creative, persuasive argument.

Page 24: Year 4 Home Learning!€¦ · 'inspired' piece of writing based on the short film, 'A new hue'. A non-chronological report about Blot Have another look at the character of Blot. He

Step Two – Research! Now that you've got your 'thing' that annoys you, you're going to need some facts and information to back up your argument. Sure, ranting can be fun, but it's also unlikely to persuade people. Time to research some facts, teach yourself something new, and get some ammo for the perfect persuasive argument!

Encyclopedias are good places to research. They contain large collections of writings and photographs around your chosen subject area.

There are many to choose from, both online and offline. The link below takes you to Encyclopedia Britannica, which is a frequently fact-checked online encyclopedia.

https://www.britannica.com/

You may already have the perfect book on your chosen subject! If this is the case, then get unpacking what's inside!

If you know somebody with experience in this area, you could interview them about their experiences and understanding. This is called a first-hand source, and can provide a very interesting perspective!

Page 25: Year 4 Home Learning!€¦ · 'inspired' piece of writing based on the short film, 'A new hue'. A non-chronological report about Blot Have another look at the character of Blot. He

Step Three – Write a persuasive argumentYou may have the passion, and you may have the facts, but you're not going to convince anyone to banish your thing to ROOM 101 unless you are very, very persuasive. Use the advice below to construct your persuasive argument! Feel free to litter it with puns and jokes too; people are more likely to agree with you if they find you friendly and lighthearted!

Page 26: Year 4 Home Learning!€¦ · 'inspired' piece of writing based on the short film, 'A new hue'. A non-chronological report about Blot Have another look at the character of Blot. He

Step Four – Film your argument for the TV!Now is your big moment! After a bit of rehearsing, you can now film yourself delivering your persuasive argument, using whatever device your adults may have available. For the chance to be included in our Year 4 version of 'ROOM 101', be sure to email your finished videos to your teachers.
