This term our topic is The Tudors The children will be learning about the following:

• English – In our Literacy topic we are exploring stories

set within Historical Settings. During this unit we are specifically looking at creating characters and settings, plot development and writing in the past tense, with the use of dialogue to enhance narrative writing. Over the course of the Autumn Term, we will be looking at creating images through poetry.

• Maths – This year the children are introduced to

concrete, pictorial and abstract methods of using and applying mathematics. We have started the term by focussing on place value in 4 and 5 digit numbers in relation to decimals and fractions as well as whole numbers. In addition, the children will be learning to round to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000 as well as writing numbers to the value of 10,000. We will also be applying inverse and problem-solving strategies.

• Science – We are going to investigate the features of

the human eye, how brightness effects our eyes and the uses of glasses and their benefits for different issues.

• History- We are studying the Tudors and how they first came to reign. We will be studying Henry VIII, one of the most influential Monarchs of this period.

• Visual Arts – We are studying focus drawing skills, line

drawings and shading.

• Guided Reading - Children will be taught reading comprehension each day where the focus will be on reading, engaging, interpreting the text and answering questions. This whole class session will involve children taking on roles such as the 'Predictor, Questioner, Clarifier and Summariser' to unpick the text. These roles will engage the children in a range of activities to help develop a deeper understanding of the text. New words and vocabulary will be explicitly taught to help children learn and use a broader array of language. The children will then be able to answer the comprehension questions effectively and have a deeper understanding of the text they are accessing. Our class novels this term are ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’ for Barakah and Al Farsi and ‘A Series of Unfortunate Events’ for Ibn Jabal.

What you can do at home:

Ø Read with your child every day. This will increase their fluency and will assist them in their comprehension.

Ø Sit with your child to complete their homework encouraging them to use ambitious vocabulary in their writing.

Ø Assist your child in learning their times tables with the corresponding division facts; they need to get to their 12x tables before the end of year 4!

Ø Encourage your child with their handwriting so it becomes legible and joined.
