Writing Big Write 1: Write a newspaper report Success Criteria:
• Make your headline short and snappy. • In the first sentence sum up what the story is about. • Write your report in the third person and the past tense. • Split your newspaper report up into paragraphs to help the reader clearly
understand the information. • If you use quotes to make your report more interesting, don't forget to use speech
marks! • Use a photo with a caption to give the reader more information. • Fill your newspaper report with both facts and opinions. Facts give the reader all
of the information they need by using the 5 Ws
Fire at Local Corner Shop
You are a reporter for a local newspaper. Your task is to write a newspaper report about the fire.
• In Elephant and Castle, in the early hours of the morning, a fire broke out in a three story building with a parade of shops underneath.
• A gentleman who works in one of the shops, detected smoke and discovered that his shop was on fire.
You may include details about:
• victims trapped in the building • who helped with the fire and rescue • how the residents escaped • what the future holds for residents and shop keepers

Big Write 2: Diary entry – watch this video clip! https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/uk-england-kent-44664719/wingsuit-flyer-in-snowdon-close-proximity-feat
This pulse-pounding clip follows wingsuit pilot Sam Laming as he becomes the first person to perform a close proximity wingsuit flight down Mount Snowdon in Wales. Sam spent five years training for this extreme stunt,
Place yourself in Sam’s position, write a diary entry on the day of this momentous endeavour.
Below are some ideas to help get you started:
• How do you feel? Talk about your suit, why you wanted to do this? • What’s the weather like? Though it might start off safe and sunny, what
would have happened if a storm approached? • How far can you see? Can you spot towns or villages or are you
surrounded by hills and fields? • Is there any wildlife – rabbits hopping below you, or birds flying in
formation?

Friday 30th November 2012
Dear Diary,
I had the best day EVER today. I woke up this morning, the sun was shining through the curtains and I could smell breakfast cooking downstairs. I jumped out of my bed, threw on my school clothes and skipped down to the kitchen.
A delicious breakfast of pancakes with syrup was waiting for me on the table and I gobbled it down as quick as a flash. I grabbed my school bag, shouted “Bye!” to my mum and dashed out of the door to school.
When I arrived at school, my teacher handed my homework back to me and a huge grin spread across her face. Guess what? I got 20 out of 20! I couldn’t believe it! We had my best lessons in the morning (Literacy and Geography).
Before I knew it, it was lunchtime. The menu today was my favourite: Spaghetti Bolognaise followed by Chocolate pudding – yum! The afternoon flew by, and we ended the school day with a really fun game of Dodgeball, and we all cheered when my team won (of course).
After school, I came home and was met with the most amazing surprise; my mum told me that we were going out to the cinema and to Pizza Hut for dinner. We had a fantastic time!
I’m sitting on my bed writing this, remembering all the fun things that happened today. I hope tomorrow is just as good!

Big Write 3: Write a narrative using the picture as a prompt.
When writing a story you should think about;
• In the beginning, establish your setting and characters. • In the middle, you could add conflict and a problem to solve. • At the end there could be a dramatic rescue. The ending could be happy or sad.
A setting is where and when a story is set. When writing a story, the setting is really important. Thinking about these things will help your writing.
• Think about what the setting is like, is it day-time or night-time? • How does the setting impact the characters? • Can you picture the setting clearly? This will help you describe it to the reader.
You need to create a character.
• What's their name? • How does the character behave? • What do they like to do? • How old are they? • What do they feel and what are they thinking? • Can you think of some more things you should know about your characters?
Now you are going to plan it!
