1) Read up to, “they kept anxiously shuffling their feet” (page 39) Why do you think the murderers are behaving like this?

The murderers were shuffling their feet because they had failed to kill Banquo’s son and were nervous to tell Macbeth Banquo’s son had escaped and he was still alive. They would have been frightened of Macbeth’s reaction to this news.

2) What might Macbeth be thinking and feeling when he learns that Banquo’s son has escaped?I think Macbeth would be furious and also worried that Banquo’s son had escaped the murderers. The witches made a prophecy that Banquo’s children would be kings so while Banquo’s son was still alive, he was a threat to Macbeth and could take revenge upon him for his father’s death.

3) Read to the bottom of page 44. Why do you think he wants to see the witches again? Macbeth would want to speak to the witches again to see if their prophecy has changed and what he should do next to ensure he remained King of Scotland.

TASK 4: Repeat read pages 36 – 44 and answer the ‘summarise it’ questions.

5) Summarise it! Summarise this part of the story, pages 36-44 in just five sentences. Tips – skim and scan the pages and note five key events which occur in this chapter. Then, sequence these events using adverbs of time and place (cohesion within a paragraph). Also, include names of key characters to further support cohesion, using pronouns, might make it unclear.

TASK 4: Mark your learning please.

You may have a range of answers but the six sentences must include reference to all the key events in this part of the story.

- Macbeth held a feast to celebrate his coronation but everyone noticed that Banquo, his friend, was not in attendance.

- Macbeth told the other guests Banquo must have been delayed but secretly, he knew that he had hired two murders to kill Banquo and his son.

- The murderers came to the court to tell Macbeth they had killed Banquo but his son had escaped and was still alive.

- Feeling angry, anxious and guilty, Macbeth at the news, entered the hall but was horrified to see the ghost of Banquo sitting on his throne and he began to shout angrily at the throne which to everyone else, appeared empty.

- Lady Macbeth made excuses for Macbeth’s behaviour and told everyone to leave them and go home because Macbeth was ill.

5) Summarise it! Summarise this part of the story, pages 36-44 in just five sentences.

To finish, lets watch this summary animation only to see the difference in Shakespeare's play compared to where we have read up to in Andrew Matthews version.
