Reading activity 4: Watch this video of Michael Rosen talking about his top seven fascinating facts about Shakespeare: https://www.bbc.co.uk/newsround/36099744

Can you find out seven more facts about Shakespeare? You can record your facts any way you choose e.g. a fact file, a video which you could then upload to Seesaw.

Page 9: Year 5 Home Learning Activities – Week 4fluencycontent2-schoolwebsite.netdna-ssl.com/File...Activity 3: Writing a diary entry. Choose a fairy tale that you know well e.g. Goldilocks

Reading activity 5:

Shakespeare liked joining words together to make what we called compound words. Make a list of all the compound words you can find above.

Can you think of any other compound words? For example, ‘football’ is one because it is a single word made up of two other words ‘foot’ and ‘ball’.

 Other reading activities:

● Read a chapter from your home reading book or a book that you have borrowed from the library.

● Write down any unfamiliar words from the chapter they have read. Explore the meanings of these words by using a dictionary or reading around the sentence.

● Read something around the house that isn’t a book e.g. a magazine, recipe book etc.

SPAG - expanded noun phrases

Earth Day was on Wednesday 22nd April 2020 and it is a special day every year to celebrate the magnificent world that we live in.

Look at how beautiful our planet is!

The Bissagos Islands off the coast of Guinea-Bissau, West Africa

Writing

Activity 1: Analysing the features of a diary Read the entry from Little Red Riding Hood’s diary, it’s quite funny! Then read it again and use the coloured key below to find each diary feature. A number is linked to each feature so look for that within the text and refer back to the key. Write one example of each feature from Little Red Riding Hood’s diary into your book.   E.g. Rhetorical question: Can you believe it?

Activity 3: Writing a diary entry.

Choose a fairy tale that you know well e.g. Goldilocks and the 3 bears. Write a diary entry from the point of view of Goldilocks and her description of what happened to her at the bears’ cottage.

Don’t forget to include the key features that you have been learning about in the first 2 activities.

Activity 4: Writing a diary entry.

Write about the same events that took place in yesterday’s diary entry. But this time choose a different character e.g. Daddy Bear and describe it from his point of view. It should be very different from how Goldilocks describes it!!

Activity 5: Writing a diary entry https://www.dkfindout.com/uk/explore/dear-diary-five-famous-diary-writers/

Look at the above link which tells you a brief history of famous diary writers and what they wrote about.

Imagine that you are a famous child diary writer. Write a diary entry describing your day as a 10 year old at this present time.

Try to include lots of the key features for an interesting and exciting diary entry!

Page 25: Year 5 Home Learning Activities – Week 4fluencycontent2-schoolwebsite.netdna-ssl.com/File...Activity 3: Writing a diary entry. Choose a fairy tale that you know well e.g. Goldilocks

Activity 1: Converting decimal tenths and hundredths to fractions.

Page 26: Year 5 Home Learning Activities – Week 4fluencycontent2-schoolwebsite.netdna-ssl.com/File...Activity 3: Writing a diary entry. Choose a fairy tale that you know well e.g. Goldilocks

 Complete the table:

Challenge: What do you think this decimal is as a fraction?  Explain how you know.

Page 27: Year 5 Home Learning Activities – Week 4fluencycontent2-schoolwebsite.netdna-ssl.com/File...Activity 3: Writing a diary entry. Choose a fairy tale that you know well e.g. Goldilocks

Activity 2: Converting decimals to fractions  Write the following decimal numbers as fractions e.g. 0.27 = 27/100, 0.2 = 2/10. Look carefully at the number of decimal places.

Now think of five of your own decimal numbers and convert them to fractions.   Challenge: Can you write your own decimal word problem? Maybe give it to a family member for them to solve. Remember, you must know the answer yourself!

Page 28: Year 5 Home Learning Activities – Week 4fluencycontent2-schoolwebsite.netdna-ssl.com/File...Activity 3: Writing a diary entry. Choose a fairy tale that you know well e.g. Goldilocks

Activity 3: Converting fractions   REMINDER...  A proper fraction is a fraction when the numerator (top number) is smaller than the denominator (bottom number) e.g. ¾, 8/10, 75/100  An improper fraction is a fraction when the numerator (top number) is equal to or larger than the denominator (bottom number) e.g. 7/4    A mixed fraction is a fraction with a whole number and proper fraction together e.g. 2 ⅓   So overall...

Can you remember when we converted improper fractions to mixed number fractions in class? Let’s refresh your memory:   To convert an improper fraction to a mixed number fraction follow these steps:

1. Divide the numerator by the denominator (this will give you how many whole numbers the improper fraction represents)

2. Write down the whole number answer 3. Write down any remainder above the denominator as a fraction

Let’s look at converting to a mixed fraction:  11 divided by 4 = 2 with a remainder of 3.

Write down 2 (as the whole number) and the remainder (3) above the denominator (4) to make a fraction.

So the answer is:

Page 29: Year 5 Home Learning Activities – Week 4fluencycontent2-schoolwebsite.netdna-ssl.com/File...Activity 3: Writing a diary entry. Choose a fairy tale that you know well e.g. Goldilocks

That example can be written like this:

Now, it’s your turn…Keep looking back at the example above and the instructions to help you.

Convert to a mixed fraction:

Convert to a mixed fraction:    Circle the mixed number fraction that matches each improper fraction.

Page 30: Year 5 Home Learning Activities – Week 4fluencycontent2-schoolwebsite.netdna-ssl.com/File...Activity 3: Writing a diary entry. Choose a fairy tale that you know well e.g. Goldilocks

Write the mixed fractions to match each improper fraction:

Challenge - Mark my work:

I’ve converted into a mixed number fraction and I think the answer is: 44 ¾. Why am I wrong? Can you spot my error and also tell me what the correct answer is?

Activity 4: Converting fractions word problems.

Read each problem carefully, thinking about creating an improper fraction from the information provided.

E.g. Thirteen apples are put into boxes of 6. Express how many boxes are filled using a mixed number:

Starting point: What is the improper fraction? 13/6 If we go back to the instructions in activity 3 - divide 13 by 6 = 2 remainder 1.  Therefore the mixed number fraction is: 2 ⅙

Activity 5 - Let’s reason and problem solve - Mathematics is a creative subject. It involves spotting patterns, making connections, and finding new ways of looking at things. Creative mathematicians play with ideas, draw pictures, have the courage to experiment and ask good questions.

Challenge 1: How Many?

Linked to the estimating challenge we set on seesaw, take a look at these photographs and answer the questions.

1. Peaches

Science - This term’s topic is ‘Living things and their habitats’.

During this topic you will learn to:

1.  describe the differences in the life cycles of a mammal, an amphibian, an insect and a bird

2. describe the life process of reproduction in some plants and animals.

Key vocabulary: Life cycle, reproduce, sexual, sperm, fertilises, egg, live young, metamorphosis, asexual, bulbs, cuttings.

Session 2: Plant Reproduction

In the same way animals reproduce by making more of their own kind, plants also reproduce.

Today’s Walt: understand the life cycle of a plant

Watch: https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zgssgk7/articles/zqbcxfr to find out how.

Explain how plants reproduce to a family member.

Can you remember the parts of a plant from last weeK? Scroll down below the video to remind yourself here:

Next complete:

After you have filled in the blanks correctly, write out the sentence before moving on to the next one.

PSHE: Earth Day

What can you do to protect our planet? How can you make small changes in your life to help care for our world? Think of five ways you can help and try to stick to these commitments. Remember what you have learnt about climate change and what we do at school, especially to maintain our Eco School status. Did you know Hitherfield joined the Eco School Scheme in 2007 and we have achieved silver status? You can write or draw your ideas. You might like to create a poster and attach your ideas as shown in the picture below. Maybe your family can write what they’re going to do as well.
