Year 5/6 Home Learning Pack
Week beginning 4.5.20
Reading
This week, the reading activities are again based on the book Holes and will continue
from chapter 6.
Activity 1
Read chapter 6.
Have a go at answering these questions based on the chapter.
a) Why does the author use the phrase ‘..if you could call it that’ repeatedly in the
opening to this paragraph?
b) Why didn’t anyone believe Stanley had stolen the shoes?
c) Look at the paragraph beginning ‘As Stanley tried to turn over..’. Can you find two
pieces of evidence that suggest the bed is not brilliant?
d) How did Stanley get the trainers / sneakers?
Activity 2
Read from the start of chapter 7 to “...and it hurt to hold the shovel.” at the top of
page 13.
Design a post card.
On the front, draw a picture of Camp Green Lake using what you know about it from
previous descriptions.
On the back, write the postcard to Stanley’s mum from Stanley based on what he does
and how you think he might feel in this part of the story.
Remember, when you write a postcard, you need to keep it brief and sometimes words
can be shortened e.g. c u soon!
Activity 3
Read from the paragraph beginning “Stanley's great-great-grandfather..” on the top of
page 13 to the bottom of page 15.
In this section, we are introduced to a few new characters.
Next to each character’s name, write a little bit about what who they are, and anthing
you know about them.
Elya Yelnats
Myra Menke
Igor Barkov
Madame Zeroni
Activity 4
Read pages 16 and 17.
Camp Green Lake is a fictional juvenile centre in Texas, USA.
Undertake some research into Texas to see what it is like. Make notes about what you
find out.
Activity 5
Read from the top of page 18 to the end of chapter 7.
Stanley Yelnats is a palindrome because it spells the same word forward, as it does
backwards.
Can you think of any other palindromes? Write them in the space below!
Writing
Activity 1
Look at the film advertisements below. Can you label any features that you think show
it is an advertisement?
Activity 2
A synopsis is a brief summary, a bit like the blurb of a book!
When a new film is coming out, a synopsis is written for those who are interested in
watching it. Here is an example for Avengers Assemble!
Nick Fury is the director of S.H.I.E.L.D., an international peace-keeping agency. The
agency is a who's who of Marvel Superheroes with: Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk,
Thor, Captain America, Hawkeye and Black Widow. When global security is threatened
by Loki and his evil group of bad guys, Nick Fury and his team will need all their
invincible powers to save the world from disaster which is formed by Loki.
Can you write a synopsis for your favourite film? Think about how you are going to
structure the text. It should have powerful adjectives to convince the reader to watch
the film and you could use rhetorical questions to persuade further.
Activity 3
Below are the synopsis for Mr Quarmby, Miss Welburn and Mr Roberts’ favourite films.
Choose one that you like the sound of and design an advertisement for it from what is
inferred. Use your retrieval and vocabulary skills to think of ideas of what to include in
your advertisement.
1. Woody, Buzz Lightyear and the rest of the gang embark on a road trip with
Bonnie and a new toy named Forky. The adventurous journey turns into an
unexpected reunion as Woody's slight detour leads him to his long-lost friend Bo
Peep. As Woody and Bo discuss the old days, they soon start to realize that
they're worlds apart when it comes to what they want from life as a toy.
2. This Disney animated feature follows the adventures of the young lion, Simba,
the heir of his father, Mufasa. Simba's wicked uncle (Scar) plots to usurp
Mufasa's throne by luring father and son into a stampede of wildebeests. But
Simba escapes, and only Mufasa is killed. Simba returns as an adult to take back
his homeland from Scar - with the help of his friends Timon and Pumbaa.
3. Rebellious16-year-old mermaid Ariel is fascinated with life on land. On one of her
visits to the surface, which are forbidden by her controlling father, King Triton,
she falls for a human prince. Determined to be with her new love, Ariel makes a
dangerous deal with the sea witch - Ursula - to become human for three days.
But when plans go awry for the star-crossed lovers, the king must make the
ultimate sacrifice for his daughter.
Activity 4
Watch a film of your choice and write a synopsis for someone to read, who hasn’t seen
the film.
Activity 5
Write a film review for the film you watched yesterday. Here are some examples and a
success criteria of things you should include in your review.
If you need some help, there is also a stencil you could use to help you with the
structure.

The left hand column is the easiest and the right hand one is the hardest.
If there is a questions you are unsure how to do, please make a note of it and we will go
through it when we are back at school. Alternatively, remember you can always e-mail
us!
You can use a calculator to check your answers after you have done them or you can e-

History
On Friday 8th May 2020, it will be the 75th anniversary of VE Day. That is why there is
going to be a special bank holiday on a Friday this year instead of a Monday.
To help commemorate this, we have put together some activities to help you understand
what this is all about.
Activity 1
To develop your understanding of VE day, have a read through this Newsround article.

making. Many food items were rationed in WW2 so they shouldnt require too many
ingredients!
Activity 5
As stated above, many parties were held to celebrate VE day.
Can you design your own party invitation to a VE Day Celebration Party?
What images will you put on your design?
Where will it be held?
When will it be held?
