year 6 solar task sheet€¦ ·...

Your task requires you to create a 3D design of a house/building using Google SketchUp outlining the impacts and benefits of solar energy on the environment and what this means as an ongoing reliable source of sustainable energy for our future. You will need to add this information in to a digital presentation using iMovie, Movie Maker or PowerPoint and record your explanation. See below for further breakdown of what will need to be included in your presentation. You will have 4 weeks to complete these tasks, which will count as your Science and Design Technologies assessment for the Term. You will have plenty of class time to work on your assessment, however it is a good idea to write a timeline in your diary and ensure you work on the task at home. Your  task  requires  you  to  create  a  3D  design  of  a  house/building  using  Google  SketchUp  outlining  the  impacts  and  benefits  of  solar  energy  on  the  environment  and  what  this  means  as  an  ongoing  reliable

source  of  sustainable  energy  for  our  future.    You  will  need  to  add  this  information  in  to  a  digital  presentation  using  iMovie,  Movie  Maker  or

PowerPoint  and  record  your  explanation.  See  below  for  further  breakdown  of  what  will  need  to  be  included  in  your  presentation.

You  will  have  4  weeks  to  complete  these  tasks,  which  will  count  as  your  Science  and  Design  Technologies  assessment  for  the  Term.  You  will  have  plenty  of  class  time  to  work  on  your  assessment,  however  it  is  a

good  idea  to  write  a  timeline  in  your  diary  and  ensure  you  work  on  the  task  at  home.

UNDERSTANDING  RENEWABLE  AND  NON-‐RENEWABLE  ENREGIES  AS

A  MEANS  FOR  SUSTAINABILITY

Design  Checklist

1. Present  and  communicate  design  ideas  using  iMovie/  Movie  Maker  or  PowerPoint  to  demonstrate  your  understanding  of  energy,  electricity  and  renewable  and  non-‐renewable  energies  and  how  this  links  with  sustainability  for  the  future.

2. Your  presentation/video  will  need  to  have  your  own  voice  recorded  as  a  narration  explaining  your  findings  (Remember  not  to  crowd  your  slides  with  too  much  information,  dot  points  are  fine  along  with  images  and  diagrams.  Your  narration  should  provide  the  most  information.)

3. Provide  a  thorough  explanation  of  how  electricity  works:  -‐  Outline  the  difference  between  parallel  and  series  circuits  (use  diagrams  to  help  visualise)  -‐  Describe  which  materials  are  conductors  and  insulators  of  electricity  -‐  Discuss  what  electrons  are  and  how  they  are  transferred  (from  positive  or  negative?)  -‐  Definition  and  examples  of  renewable  and  non-‐renewable  energies  that  conduct  electricity  around  the  world

4. Research  whether  solar  energy  is  a  sustainable  energy  source  and  outline  the  equipment  and  materials  needed  to  produce  solar  panels.  Provide  an  explanation  as  to  how  solar  energy  impacts  or  benefits  the  environment.

5. Follow  this  with  an  explanation  as  to  which  climates/countries  you  believe  (from  your  research)  would  benefit  most  from  solar  and  provided  details  as  to  why  you  have  come  to  this  conclusion.  Discuss  whether  you  think  solar  is  used  productively  in  these  places  or  suggest  how  they  might  improve  the  demand  of  solar  energy.

6. Use  Google  SketchUp  to  design  a  house/building  to  provide  an  example  of  how  the  use  of  solar  power  is/isn’t  efficient,  the  environmental  impacts  and  the  money  that  can  be  saved.  Make  sure  you  include:

-‐  Size  of  the  house  and  how  many  people  live  there  -‐  The  country/place  your  house  is  located  -‐  Materials  used  for  solar  install  and  the  cost  -‐  How  this  benefits  the  environment  and  what  this  means  for  the  future

Learning  in  class

1. Collaborate  in  groups  and  experiment  with  materials,  tools  and  equipment  such  as  switches  and  light  globes  to  plan  your  design  ideas  within  your  solar  presentation  (This  will  be  completed  during  our  time  in  the  Science  Lab)

2. Work  out  which  materials  can  be  recycled  or  re-‐used  to  reduce  waste  and  discuss  some  systems  that  may  benefit  some  people,  but  may  disadvantage  others.

3. Consider  the  impact  of  designed  products,  services  or  environments  in  relation  to  sustainability  and  the  effects  this  has  on  local,  regional  and  global  communities.
