From The Headteacher...

Philip Hurst

The pace of life at Thomas Mills continues to be busy and energetic. Pupils are working hard in the classroom and also contributing to activities within school. The school election captured the interest of pupils, with many articulate and thoughtful political discussions taking place. I was delighted to be present when YENTO – our Sixth Form Young Enterprise Team, won the award for best company at the County Finals in April. Mabel McCabe has led this enterprising team extremely well, supported by our external adviser Jenny Stockman and teachers Miss Spray and Mr Symes. The team thoroughly deserve this success and we wish them well at the regional final on June 18th.At our recent House Assemblies, the Year 13 students handed over their responsibilities to new Year 12 officials. Pupils have a lot of pride in their Houses and everyone is already looking forward to Sports Day at the end of term. Plans are also well underway for an exciting Activities Week. This is always an opportunity to

experience new things and develop different skills. At the end of term we will be saying goodbye to John Jennings who retires after twenty five years of distinguished service to Thomas Mills High School. The Sixth Form provides exceptional opportunities for young people and whether students have studied with us for two years or seven, they all progress to great destinations. We will miss John but are pleased to welcome Andrew Cann as the new Head of Sixth Form. This edition of Outlook has captured many successes and recent highlights at Thomas Mills High School. The talents of our pupils are amazing and I am grateful for the support given to them by staff and parents that enables them to thrive.

Young Enterprise – Success for ‘Yento’The Thomas Mills High School Young Enterprise Company enjoyed a very successful evening, clinching an overall win at the Suffolk Area finals on 22nd April. The event, hosted by BT at Adastral Park, Martlesham Heath, was the culmination of nearly 7 months’ hard work in which students across Suffolk set up their own business, marketing and selling to the real world. We were on a final shortlist of eight schools. In September, a group of year 12 pupils went from being friends to business partners, forming ‘Yento’, selling hand-decorated picture frames inspired by our own county of Suffolk. With help from our link teachers, Miss Spray and Mr Symes, as well as business adviser Jenny Stockman, we have learned how to develop our product, raise capital, manage company finances and build a website. We have also gained experience in key life skills such

as responding to customer demands and meeting deadlines, and can boast skills in telesales and press release writing after attending workshops at Fresh Aspirations Forum. If you asked us to ‘frame’ the moments, the most amazing moment would be securing a major contract with the TA Hotel Collection for an order of 30 of our unique Aldeburgh and Southwold frames. The scariest moment was probably presenting in front of the judges and an audience of 200… However, it was all worth it!The overall winner and runner-up awards were determined by three separate assessments, involving company reports, interviews with the teams at their trade stand during the event and presentations to the panel of judges ahead of their final decision.Besides the overall winner’s trophy and a space for a stand at this year’s Suffolk

Show, ‘Yento’ received the award for the best PowerPoint presentation, Best Financing and Best Product Development. We are delighted to be going forward to the regional finals of the National Young Enterprise Competition in Cambridge on 18th June. We also hope you saw us at the Suffolk Show where we sold our eye-catching frames on 27th and 28th May. Wish us luck!

CAREERS FAIR 2015On 5th February Thomas Mills High School held its annual Careers Fair. 52 companies and organisations attended this year, breaking previous records.

They represented a wide range of career sectors, and included local colleges and universities, as well as apprenticeship and training providers.

As in previous years, the event was targeted at pupils from Year 8 upwards, to help with their option choices and to assist with their post 16 and post 18 planning.

The main aim of the evening was to introduce pupils to as broad a range of careers as possible and the training routes into them. Many thanks to all the

representatives who gave up their time to attend and support the event.

Jane Wheeler, Careers & Work Experience Co-ordinator

In September 1990 I was appointed Head of Sixth Form and had the good fortune to move into what was then a brand new Sixth Form Centre, replacing the old centre in what is today LR1, the Music Room!In the last 25 years, approaching 4000 students have passed through the Sixth Form. Inevitably, there have been some significant changes but also some constants which I have cherished.

The Sixth Form Centre itself has obviously had some wear and tear, upstairs has been re-modelled, computer rooms and work stations have appeared. Designed for 190 students, it has always had over 250 students, reaching 325 at one time. In recent years, numbers have stabilised at between 280 and 290. A constant I have always valued and sought to maintain is the broad academic and social mix of students and the wide geographical area they come from. Their number has enabled us to have breadth in the courses we offer; the ‘mix’ has created a rich and productive learning and social environment from which students have benefited, individually and collectively. The last 25 years appear, at times, to have been a period of constant change in education which has accelerated in recent years. By the mid-1990s modular A levels were beginning to emerge. This allowed students to measure their progress over a two year course, go back and re-work areas they had difficulty with, not dependent upon one final exam sitting, just as you would in a working environment. From 2000 all A levels had a

modular structure. This development was key in ensuring that the strengths of A levels, and the opportunities they create, were open to the wide ability range that is a feature of The Sixth Form at Thomas Mills High School. Today, the cycle of change has gone full circle with the re-introduction of, essentially, linear A levels from 2015 which the school is already adjusting to.

However, within this change there have been some wonderful constants. The students in the Sixth Form, their styles, ‘fashions’ and attitudes may have evolved and re-emerged but their optimism, vitality, willingness to learn and embrace opportunities, and warm character, have been refreshingly unbroken; something I have often taken heart from. It has been a privilege to see them progress as individuals and groups. Equally, I have had the privilege to work with dedicated colleagues who have demonstrated a level of commitment to the education and development of young people that would be difficult to replicate; faces may have changed but their steadfastness towards the students in their care has remained.I have had a wonderful opportunity: at times it has been a ‘big dipper’, ‘rollercoaster’ ride, but the willingness of students and staff to confront and adapt to change has, I believe, allowed the varied strengths of young people to be developed.I look forward to hearing of the continuing growth, development and success of the Sixth Form and School.

French Exchange ReportGoing on the French Exchange was a great experience and a lot of fun. The French Exchange is a seven day trip. You spend the weekend with your partner and the rest on trips. On the first day we drove to Dover by bus and got on a ferry. Once we got to Calais we drove to our partner’s house.

On Friday we drove (by bus) to Paris. We saw a bridge of locks, Notre Dame and lots more. We went to the Louvre Museum and saw many pictures and sculptures, collected over many periods of time. Next we had a trip on the river Seine, where we went through Paris on a boat. At the weekend, Nathan and I played football with our partners at the school. Then Nathan, Adam and I went to a pizzeria.

The next day we went bowling. On Monday we went to a famous champagne cellar/tunnel and I bought two champagne glasses for my mum and dad. Then we went to a really nice bakery. The next day we went to a biscuit factory called ‘Fossier’, where they make pink biscuits. Next we went to a hyper market and bought some French food, a tour guide showed us around the church and all its history and then we did some shopping in Riems. Wednesday was probably the most fun because we went to Disneyland Paris, which was amazing, and went on some great rides.

I bought a stick alien toy from the Buzz Lightyear ride. My favourite ride was probably the Star Wars simulator. The final day we packed our bags and started our journey home.

23 Year 9 Spanish students enjoyed an excellent Spanish cultural day at the restaurant ‘La Tasca’ in Norwich on 5th March. The day started with a fun taste of the Caribbean, with a Cuban salsa lesson, all conducted in Spanish, and we got to learn new dance steps whilst practising new language and rhythms. We also learnt to cook authentic Spanish Paella and enjoyed tasting it as part of our tapas lunch. We all ordered our food and drinks in Spanish and we really enjoyed using our new skills. The food was delicioso!, particularly the churros with chocolate and strawberries at the end. It was a great day out and we all learnt a lot.

NESA County Championships National Final 2015Back in February three Thomas Mills High School pupils, Daisy Kiddy, Charlotte Wood and Katie Smith won the 80cm show jumping at Topthorn Arena in a hotly contested class and became Suffolk champions. This was a huge achievement as nearly every private school in the county had teams of four entered and our three scores all had to count. As a result of this we qualified to represent Suffolk at the National Championships at Bury Farm, Buckinghamshire in April. As we needed to enter a team of four, Shannon Curtis also joined us for the final.

On 16th April, I, my horse Velvet and my mum Amy (who was acting team manger as Miss Lambert was unable to come), travelled down in convoy with two of the Farlingaye team who had qualified for the 70cm final. On arrival at Bury Farm we realised just how big and competitive this was going to be as the arena, jumps and complex were like nothing we have here in East Anglia!

After settling Velvet in his stable, mum collected the team numbers and as I was doing the warm up class later, I walked the course with her. Due to the number of entries I didn’t get to jump until nearly 8pm and, although we weren’t placed, I was really pleased with his round. We finished just in time to join

Farlingaye for supper in the restaurant! Katie and her parents had also arrived and were staying nearby. Charlotte, Shannon and their families arrived Friday morning and with Katie we all walked the course for the first round outside. Although we had qualified for the 80cm, we knew it would be bigger at the final and it certainly was! The next round was indoors and was even bigger and wider and was causing problems for many teams which meant it was running very late and we finally jumped at 7pm. Although the team was unplaced, we all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, having the opportunity to compete and represent our school at such a competitive final.

We are all keen to try again next year and will be better prepared now we know the courses at the final will be substantially bigger and scarier than the height you qualify at!The team would like to thank Linda Maude and The Pony People for ensuring that we and all our ponies looked smart and professional in our team kit; Miss Lambert for doing all the entries and paperwork; the school for supporting us; and our families for all their help and getting us there and back!Roll on next year!

In unnaturally warm British weather, the school’s annual Charity Day began as always with the sound of shiny coins clinking into buckets, amidst cries of laughter from colourfully-clad caped crusaders, silent secret agents under cover as teachers and a vast array of other interesting costumes, all arriving for the morning’s house assemblies. Out in the courtyard the patter of feet filled the air as participants skipped, jumped and hoola-hooped their way to the moon, whilst still the clinking of coins continued. At lunch, the Charity Concert got under way, with hosts Emile Burgoyne and Jamie Rose bringing laughter to the eagerly awaiting crowd. Then commenced, a fun-packed hour of music, dancing and Diablo, with a fiesta-flavoured finale from ‘Turkey Dinosaur and the Potato Faces’ who started a maraca-shakin’ conga line to lead festivities – raising money for Comic Relief and the Woolverstone Wish. In total, the school as a whole raised £3,855.28 and we would like to thank everyone for their generous contributions. Let’s raise even more next year! Tom Peck, Head Boy

CHARITY DAY 2015

Year 12 trip to The Houses of Parliament

On the 24th February, Mrs Hasler and 13 Year 12 Politics students had the chance to visit the Houses of Parliament and the UK Supreme Court. The day was utterly fascinating and gave us the opportunity to see politics in action as we watched part of a debate on health in the House of Commons, and also watched part of a very complicated fraud trial in the Supreme Court. We also met with Dr Dan Poulter MP for a very informative meeting and would like to thank him for arranging this visit.

On Thursday 7 May, we held our own ‘election’ where pupils had to register to be able to cast their vote on polling day at the polling station, in the Library. The leaders of the various parties also took part in a ‘Question Time’ style debate and impressed everyone with their political knowledge and debating skills. 804 votes were cast, a turnout of 88%. The COCA COLA ReAL BUSINeSS ChALLeNGeyeAR 10

On 12th February a Thomas Mills High School Team, made up of 8 Year 10 pupils, made their way to The Open in Norwich to take part in the Regional Final of The Coca Cola Real Business Challenge, having made it through to this stage along with the other 1% of teams nationally. The team qualified for the finals by creating their own new, tropical, super -charged healthy drinks brand ‘Jackai’. Their concept, business planning and creative marketing plan all captured the judges’ imagination, including their “acting skills” in their very own TV advert.

The final saw the team create a fundraising and social media plan, and develop and present an App for The Special Olympics being held in L.A in 2015.They received their brief at 9.30am and had until 1.15pm to complete a full strategy, and create a viable app.

The team had strict deadlines to meet, budgets to deliver and a board of high-calibre judges to impress. They did a fantastic job and showed that they are true young entrepreneurs and business people already!

EXPEDITION TO PERU READY FOR TAKE OFFThe preparations for the school’s expedition to Peru continue apace and the participants are putting the final touches to their training and ensuring that all the necessary equipment and arrangements are in place.

The group headed to the New Forest at Easter and went through their paces under the watchful eyes of Outlook Expedition Leader Chris Golby who will be leading the group alongside staff members Mrs Middleton and Mr Tattoo. Despite the cold night time temperatures everyone enjoyed themselves and successfully completed the various challenges during the weekend which included pitching tents, a day’s walk and cooking on trangias.

A key element of the trip will be the community project based in the Sacred Valley where the team is likely to be working alongside local people to help build a fish farm or improve irrigation.

In addition to the community project, the group will be undertaking a trek on the famous Salcantay Trail, culminating in a visit to the World Heritage site Machu Picchu and visits to the capital city Lima and the colourful city of Cusco. It is an exciting venture for all concerned and a full report will appear in the next edition of OUTLOOK.

SCIENCE WEEK 2015“To me there has never been a higher source of earthly honour or distinction than that connected with advances in science”- Issac Newton

In the 3rd week of March, in celebration of the British Science and Engineering Week, the science department hosted a series of eye-opening experiments in which students of all years could take part. As well as lunchtime activities, throughout lessons students were able to research famous scientists and their impact on the world by creating posters which will be displayed along the science corridor. Additionally, a challenge won by 7AHa form was set to find and answer questions on famous scientists including, Darwin, Einstein, Newton and Curie.

“I have been impressed with the urgency of doing. Knowing is not enough; we must apply. Being willing is not enough; we must do”- Leonardo Da Vinci

The week started off when Miss Crisp and Mr Symes showed how students with only a buffer solution, some ethanol, a paper clip and a steady hand, could extract a sample of DNA from kiwi fruit. On Tuesday, Mr Bostock and Mr Halls gave students the experience of seeing sounds when investigating The Sound of Science.

“We can allow satellites, planets, suns, universe, nay whole systems of universes, to be governed by laws, but the smallest insect, we wish to be created at once by special act”- Charles Darwin

Anywhere else, the fire, flashes and bangs seen and heard on Wednesday would cause chaos but not here. Nonetheless, more students’ curiosity lured them in for a variety of captivating chemical activities which Mrs Calver and Mr Warren had arranged. These included identifying unknown chemicals using the flame test, making silly putty and elephant toothpaste, hence a big mess, and literally releasing flames from the palm of their hand using methane bubbles. Overall a very explosive lunchtime.

Seeing the energy, the whole-hearted passion and, frankly, the pure shock of the students was immeasurable. The thrill and astonishment which resonate between everyone interested in science and

engineering is why we as a species through technology and knowledge have come so far. The future is promising, as after all…

“…to raise new questions, new possibilities, to regard old problems from a new angle, requires creative imagination and marks real advance in science”- Albert Einstein

The Michael Sims Memorial Fund2015 sees the 30th anniversary of the tragic death of former Head Boy, Michael Sims. At the time of his death he was half way through his medical course at University College Hospital in London. The memorial fund was founded in his memory to benefit the pupils of the school he had loved and to encourage his own interests in others. The trustees of the fund use the interest earned on a capital sum of more the £90.00 to further the following aims:

• To provide grants to pupils and former pupils (under the age of 25) of the school to help them undertake foreign travel for educational purposes• To help former pupils of the school who become medical students• To help promote an awareness amongst pupils of the school of the affairs of the Developing World

Recent examples of grants awarded include to students who travelled to Thailand for a scout gathering, to South Africa for conservation work and to India to teach. The fund also helps whole school ventures such as the expedition to Zambia and music tours to Tuscany and Belgium. The trustees of the fund meet twice a year in February and June to consider requests for financial assistance. If any pupil feels that the fund could help them to fulfil their dreams, they should write to Mr Cann, one of the trustees, with details of their travel plans and costs involved.

MUSIC DEPARTMENT NEWSThe Spring Term began with the School Music competition. The heats were held over several weeks and culminated in a Winners’ Concert, adjudicated by Rob Rogers. Some 25 of the school’s finest musicians performed in the four categories: grades I-III, grades IV-VI, grades VII-VIII and composition. Rob Rogers was most complimentary about all the competitors. At the end of the evening a winner and runner-up were selected from each category with Eleanor Retey (9SSm) being awarded the title of Junior Young Musician of the Year and Charlotte Poole (13JGi) the title of Senior Young Musician of the Year.

Just before half term all Year 7 classes were involved in the Class Singing Competition – this was an enjoyable occasion with a lovely atmosphere.Musically, the term ended with a fabulous, though inevitably long (!), Easter Concert with some stunning solo performances from Maddie Brooks and Rachel Routledge; moving performances from the Chamber Choir; and a rousing finale from the 1st Orchestra. Classical Civilisation in the 6th Form: British Museum VisitWe make our way through the crowd and pass through the glass doors into a large room. There we see it, continuing round the walls of the room to make a ribbon… A great procession of mingling citizens and the gods dramatized onto marble. It can only be the famous Parthenon frieze. You may have heard in the news recently about the controversy surrounding the Elgin marbles, or made a papier-mâché version of it at primary school, but the truth is everyone has heard of the Parthenon, one of the most famous buildings in the world. Our visit to the British Museum on 24th February was organised to bring us up close to the Parthenon sculptures, and other Greek subjects, which we have been studying for the last year as part of the Art and Architecture module.

The Parthenon was erected as a temple to the goddess Athena on the Athenian Acropolis, after it was sacked by the Persians in 480BC. The designer Pheidias’ aim was to define Athenians in opposition to the ‘barbaric’ Persians, a confident statement of political togetherness. He certainly succeeded: the skilful horsemen on the frieze are uniform and idealized, the epitome of the Classical style, whilst the grand sculptures of the gods on the pediments (above) take drapery to a new level. In fact the British museum itself could be linked to the Parthenon with its pediment sculpture and the same eight columns at the front. The transformation of Greek art seen on the Acropolis and elsewhere during the fifth century BC idealized naturalism and is known as the ‘Greek Revolution’. Was it this ‘golden age’ of politics, a time of democracy, that sparked the change?Elsewhere in the museum we looked at works by the Mycenaean people from 1400BC, red-figure vases of the Athenians and plans for the Palace of Knossos at Crete.

However, I think we all enjoyed seeing the Parthenon sculpture most, being face to face with the exceptional workmanship that we had heard so much about. Some of us even had time to do some sketching… Mabel McCabe, Year 12

‘The best bit about the British Museum trip was being able to see the statues up close and be able to see on the video how some of the carvings looked when reconstructed with paint. It makes you appreciate how skilled the Greeks were’. Amy Denson, Year 12

Now showing at the British museum is their new block buster exhibition ‘Defining Beauty’, on until 5 July. Highly recommended for anyone with an interest in the paramount importance of Greek sculpture in Western Art, as well as anyone thinking of studying Classics in Year 12!

THOMAS MILLS HIGH SCHOOL SKI TRIP 2015

Over February half-term 52 students from Years 9-13 and 6 members of staff enjoyed a fantastic week of skiing in Austria. We stayed in the Hotel Rupertushof in Abtenau and Klemmens. Our tour guide ensured we were well looked after, even serving a mediaeval banquet in a suit of armour on one evening.

The ski region, Dachstein West, was ideal for the 19 beginners as well as the numerous ‘experts’, with some wide blue runs for those beginners, more challenging reds and blacks for the staff, as well as a snow-park for the lunatic fringe. We were certainly blessed with the weather, experiencing clear blue skies and sunshine every day. As well as the skiing, the group also had the opportunity to take part in tubing, indoor climbing, an evening trip to Salzburg, sumo wrestling, a cabaret and disco.

Top skier of the week was Kassi Watson; future sumo champion of the world went to Lucy Gooch and the Stuart Dines Award went to Christian Trash. The planning for next year’s trip is well under way, so see Mr Harding if you’d like to go.
