KNOWLEDGE DEVELOPMENT:2. With your copy of the description, use THREE separate colours to underline words or phrases for the following:

• Appearance Talents Personality

“He is 29 years old and the most handsome prince I have ever seen. Nature could not have done more for him. He is taller than usual with a very strong calf to his leg. His face is very fair and bright, and he has auburn hair. On hearing that the king of France wore a beard, he allowed his own to grow which he combs straight and short and as it is reddish, he now has a beard that looks like gold. His round face is so beautiful that it would suit a pretty woman, although his throat is rather long and thick.

He is very talented, speaks French, Latin and Spanish and a little Italian. He is very religious and attends services three times a day when he hunts, and sometimes five on other days. He is very fond of hunting and sometimes tires out eight or ten horses in a day. He plays well on the lute and the harpsichord, and sings from music at sight. He is a better jouster than any man in England, and he jousts marvellously.

I tell – he is in every way a most talented prince.”

Prince Arthur of England marries Catherine of Aragon (Spain)

Henry VII dies; Henry VIII becomes king and marries Catherine of Aragon.

Catherine informs Henry VIII of the English victory over Scotland and gives him the Scottish King’s blood-soaked coat.

Henry VIII thinks Catherine is too old to have more children, and Henry starts to fall in love with Anne Boleyn.

Henry VIII ignores the Pope, marries Anne, and Anne gives birth to princess Elizabeth.

KNOWLEDGE DEVELOPMENT:4. Henry wanted to divorce Catherine because of his desire to have a son. Do you agree or disagree. Explain. (5)

I agree with this statement. It says on page 17 that Henry’s desire for a baby

boy began a series of events that altered religion and power in England. As

king, Henry needed to have a male heir for the throne. Catherine gave birth to

six children but only one survived – a girl called Mary. Page 16 says that Henry

thought Catherine was getting too old to have more children. This suggests

that Henry wanted to get divorced so he could marry another woman and try

to have a son.

However, Henry also wanted a divorce for other reasons. He fell in love with

Anne Boleyn and wanted to marry her. He also disagreed with the Pope over

religion in England.

Elizabeth I ruled over England for an astonishing forty five years, from 1558 until her death in 1603. She was an unlikely heir to the throne, with both her brother Edward and half-sister Mary being first and second in line. After the death of her father Henry VIII, little brother Edward became KingEdward VI. Both Edward and Elizabeth were brought up to be Protestants, but their half-sister Marywas raised a Catholic. In 1553, Edward died and Mary Tudor took the throne, changing England back to a Catholic country. Mary Was so strict that she even put her half-sisterElizabeth into the Tower of London. She spent two months imprisoned, just because Mary had the feeling she was plotting to take over the throne. In 1558 Elizabeth became queen. She was no ordinary woman - she was known to be of high intelligence and had a lot of courage for a female heir to the throne. Her rule was the Golden Age and the glorious days of all royal history. One of the major successes from her rule was the introduction of the Church of England - a negotiation between both Protestant and Catholic faiths.
