WHAT IS IT?
GCSE PE is graded between 9 - 1.
Separate to core compulsory lessons.
40% practical (includes analysis and
evaluation coursework)
60% theory (2 x summer exams in Year
11)
HOW WILL IT WORK IN YEAR 9?
Students have 2 hours of GCSE PE per
week.
One hour theory and one hour practical
– flexible dependent on topic covered /
time of year
PRACTICAL ACTIVITIES
Students will be assessed in three different
activities;
An individual activity - e.g. singles
badminton.
A team activity - e.g. netball or football.
Third sport from either a team or
individual activity.

THEORY LESSONS
Pupils will need to learn theory content in order to sit two 1½ hour exams in the summer of Year 11.
The theory topics include:
- Anatomy and Physiology
- Health and Fitness
- Fitness Training
- Demands on Performance
- Social and Cultural Issues in Sport
COURSEWORK
Worth 10% of overall grade.
Analysis of performance in a chosen
sport, what can affect performance and
how to improve it.

Each unit is marked with the following grades:
Level 1 Pass - equivalent to grade 2 at GCSE
Level 2 Pass - equivalent to grade 4 at GCSE
Level 2 Merit - equivalent to grade 5.5 at GCSE
Level 2 Distinction - equivalent to grade 7 at GCSE
Level 2 Distinction* - equivalent to grade 8.5 at GCSE
