January 2018 Dear Parent/Carer The course booklet aims to give you details of all the subjects which will be available for your son/daughter to study when he/she enters Year 10 in September 2018 for current Year 9 students. Due to the changing needs of our students, and government directives, we review our curriculum offer yearly so please do not assume that courses and pathways that were available to elder siblings will be the same for our current Year 8 and year 9. All students will study the core subjects and will then take a further three optional subjects. All GCSE subjects will be graded according to the reformed 9-1 grading system with grade 4 equivalent to an old grade C and grade 7 equivalent to old grade A. BTEC and vocational courses are graded using the existing Distinction, Merit, Pass criteria, (with Distinction* for outstanding attainment). All students will study the following subjects:
English (2 outcomes) Mathematics (1 outcome with Statistics as an additional outcome for most students) Science (2 outcomes) Physical Education Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education (through PSHCEE days) History or Geography (or both if desired)
Students will then choose two other subjects to complete their GCSE subject profile. Please note that although we do our best to cater for everyone’s choices, this may not always be possible where the number of places on a course is limited by the number of teachers or the equipment and resources available. We may also need to cancel courses if there is insufficient interest. Some qualificaitons and course content are still being approved by the Department for Education as part of ongoing reforms natioanlly. Although most courses in this booklet are likely to be unaffected, please be aware that a chosen course could change in terms of content or be dropped altogether. In this case, students would be offered alternative options. We work closely with our partner schools across the Trust to minimise the risk of this happening. At this point it is always worth reiterating that our advice in option selection is to choose subjects that are enjoyable and ones where students feel confident in making progress. We hope you find the information in the booklet useful and informative. Before choices are made you will have the chance to talk to departmental representatives, pastoral representatives including the Year 9 Pastoral Leaders, the Careers Advisers or a member of the Senior Leadership Team. These colleagues will all be at the Year 9 Options Evening on Monday 5 February at 6.30 pm. The Option Choices sheet is due in by Monday 16 March 2018 at the latest and must be returned to the form tutor. Yours sincerely Mr D Craine Mr A Moncur Associate Principal Assistant Principal (Curriculum)
Options choices All students must choose either History or Geography (but can choose both). Students who may wish to apply for a place at University should strongly consider choosing a language (French or Spanish) within their two options choices after choosing History or Geography. This will make them eligible for the English Baccalaureate qualification. There will be students, however, who have a very specific career choice in mind that does not require these combinations and we understand that studying a language is not the correct choice for all students. If you are unsure about whether to choose a language or not, or you have any other questions about the options procedures, you will be able to have an interview at the Options Evening itself or you can make an appointment on the evening to come into the academy for an interview during the week beginning Monday 26 February. The full list of options available is as follows, content of each course could be subject to change:
BTEC Art & Design Vocational ICT BTEC Business Studies GCSE Media Studies GCSE Computer Science BTEC Music Vocational Creative Studies in Craft BTEC Performing Arts Vocational Food and Cookery GCSE Product Design (Graphics) GCSE French GCSE Religious Studies GCSE Geography GCSE Spanish GCSE History BTEC Sports Studies
Please complete the Options Choices form at the back of this booklet and include two reserve subjects in case it is not possible to give you all of your first choices. Alternative provision We know that there are students for whom this selection of GCSE subjects is not appropriate. For these students we will prepare a curriculum designed to meet their needs. If we feel your child will benefit from an alternative provision we will contact you directly and invite you to come to the academy to discuss this programme of study. At this stage all students should choose from the options in this booklet. This will help us to create an appropriate programme of study for our alternative provision. Please note that there will be two opportunities to listen to the information giving presentation in the Auditorium from 6.30pm on the evening.
Making a choice from the option list: Our top tips!
1. Be realistic about your son/daughter’s abilities
2. Choose subjects which he/she will enjoy studying
3. Aim at a balance of subjects
4. If in doubt about the choices, discuss this at the Options Evening with one of the following members of staff:
a. Members of the Senior Leadership Team who will be in the Dining Hall
b. Mr Plummer and Miss Barker (Heads of Year 8 and 9)
c. Careers Advisors
d. Or make an appointment to come in to talk through choices with us in the following week
5. Certain grades are required for certain careers and for higher education. If your
son/daughter has a definite career in mind, then discuss which subjects are essential for that career with the above-named staff. It is anticipated that most Year 8 and Year 9 students will not have decided upon a career at this stage and many of those who have decided may wish to change their career aim at a later time. Therefore, it is wise to select subjects which allow the widest possible career choice in later years.
6. Please ensure you do not let your son/daughter choose a subject because a friend is taking that subject or because he/she expects to be taught by a particular member of staff. There are no guarantees which member of staff will teach which group and which students will be in which group.
Although it is the intention to give parents and students a major role in choosing subjects, it may not be possible, because of staffing levels, student numbers or because the choice is educationally unwise, to agree to all choices made by parents and students. In such instances final decisions will rest with the Principal of the academy.
English Baccalaureate Option Subjects
The English Baccalaureate is made up of the following subjects:
English
Mathematics
Science
Geography or History (or both)
Modern Foreign Languages (French or Spanish)
Computer Science
Students wishing to go to University are advised to consider studying a Modern Foreign Language (although students not wishing to attend University can also opt for a language).

Science
GCSEScience(9-1)QN601/8758/XTrilogyCombinedScienceWhatisGCSEScience?The KS3 curriculum is designed to develop subject knowledge and science skills that will enable students to be successful at GCSE. Students in Year 9 will begin work towards their GCSE science qualifications. Students will gain GCSEs in combined science and follow the Trilogy Pathway. Trilogy includes subject content from biology, chemistry and physics and is designed to allow progression onto A level science courses. Students will receive a double grade in Science e.g. 7-7, 6-5. This reflects the fact that Science is worth 2 GCSEs.

Additional Subjects
Students will also take Physical Education for one period each week (non-examination) and undertake three days of PSHCEE during the year. Social, Moral, Spiritual and Cultural issues will form an integral part of most lessons.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION (CORE PE)All students at The Ruth Gorse Academy will have one lesson of core Physical Education per week. These lessons will involve a continuation of the activities and sports students have participated in during Years 7 and 8. The activities covered will include: Rowing, Volleyball, Fitness, Dance, Invasion, Handball and Striking and Fielding. Students will build on and embed the physical development and skills learned in Year 7 and 8, becoming more competent, confident and expert in their techniques, and apply them across different sports and physical activities. They should understand what makes a performance effective and how to apply these principles to their own and others’ work. They should develop the confidence and interest to get involved in exercise, sports and activities out of school and in later life, and understand and apply the long-term health benefits of physical activity. Students will be expected to develop the quality and consistency of their skills with a greater focus on performance in game situations. As students move into Years 10 and 11 there is an increased focus on understanding tactics, strategies and the rules / laws of a variety of sporting activities, through officiating.
Physical, Social, Health, Citizenship and Economic Education (PSHCEE)
PSHCEE at The Ruth Gorse Academy will continue to be taught through PSHCEE days. The lessons on these days are designed to help your son/daughter make sensible and informed decisions in their lives. Detailed below are some examples of the lessons that your child will be taught on PSHCEE days. During their time studying at The Ruth Gorse Academy, students will engage in three key areas during PSHCEE days: mental and physical wellbeing, relationships and careers. Within mental and physical wellbeing, students will investigate the dangers of smoking, alcohol and drug misuse. As well as, understanding the importance of having a healthy diet and taking part in regular exercise. Within relationships, students will study how to cope with relationship breakdowns including family and friends. They will study the importance of being safe on social media and recognising potentially harmful signs alongside the topics of cyber-bullying and communication with strangers online. Within careers, students will be given a wealth of information about how their time at school will impact upon their life choices and the opportunities that are available to them. Students will begin to understand how subjects studied at school link to their future jobs and we will help them make informed decisions regarding their future aspirational choices. In all year groups students are taught about current issues that affect our world and community. This may take place during a specific PSHCEE day or it may take place during form times and our exceptional form tutors will lead and guide them through engaging discussions of how the world is changing and how it affects the whole community.
At The Ruth Gorse Academy, we are committed to ensuring that students are provided with the knowledge, skills and confidence they need to become good citizens and lead highly successful lives in modern Britain. Opportunities to explore and engage with British Values and SMSC are planned into our everyday curriculum within lessons, form time, enrichment activities and assemblies.
