Principal’s Message
It is always a pleasure to be able to report good news sto-ries and, this week, there has been much to celebrate.
You will see from the newsletter that the girls’ athletic team has won the whole Island competition and, as is always the situation with our young people, have additionally been wonderful representatives of the College. In addition, the U15 girls’ football team won against Cowes Enterprise Col-lege this week which enabled them to remain unbeaten this season and our Badminton players also enjoyed success at Cowes. Sport has gone from strength to strength at the Col-lege and, despite the challenges that the lack of a hard play area this year during the building of Phase1 have brought, ours students and staff have overcome them and continued to excel. Of course, by the end of October, we will have our new Sports Hall in place so there is much to look forward to with regard to sport in the College.
Another good news story this week has been the wonderful experience of our students who visited the Houses of Par-liament. Not only did they learn about the seat of parliament and its workings, but they also managed to watch a live debate on Brexit. Quite an educational experience! Indeed, judging by the high quality of our Sixth Form Public Speak-ing Competition, I would not be surprised to see some of our enterprising Sixth Formers in Parliament one day!
Thank you for the support you have given us as we reaffirm the very clear and high expectations that we have for our students at Christ the King College. As mentioned last week, please be aware that we have brought greater clarity to the use of mobile phones, electronic devices and the listening to music in College. You will also be aware that we have been working hard to ensure our students wear the appropriate uniform in College. On Monday, all students will be receiving a reminder of our expectations and the information can be found on our website in the students’ area. As always in such situations, the remind-ers are probably only necessary for a minority of our stu-dents. However, to ensure consistency for all students and staff, everyone will hear the same message.
Finally, it is hard to believe that it is that time of the year when Year 9 parents and their children begin the im-portant process of choosing their option subjects for GCSE study. The Options Booklet has been uploaded to our website today so that you have the opportunity to read and discuss the choices with your children in advance. I very much look forward to seeing you on Monday.
As always, have a lovely weekend.
Issue 19 3rd February 2017
Prayer: Lord, you promised that when we seek you with all our hearts, we will find you. We seek only after you. Still our troubled heart. Calm our minds. We seek only after you.
Lord, we are never going to be able to figure this out on our own, and right now we are leaning heavily on you. We seek only after you.
Lord, we give you all the anxieties and fears we feel inside; we release them all to you. We seek only after you. We open up our lives so that they become like an open book before you. May you write in it your words of inspiration and direction.
Lord, still our troubled hearts. Calm our minds. We seek only after you. We await your voice. * Prayer taken from www.lords-prayer-words.com

Friends of Christ the King
A small group of parents met with staff this
week to discuss the future fundraising efforts of
the College. A full report of this meeting and
the outcomes and objectives will be shared next
week. The parents were very supportive and
encouraging of the work the College does for
their children. We appreciate that much infor-
mation is shared each week in the Parent Bulle-
tin, and the fundraising required needs to be
made clearer. Watch this space …….
Governors’ Building Fund
More on this will be explained next week, as the
feedback from our parents’ suggests that the
reason behind this request has not been made
clear previously.

dents. Please see details below. The price
has been reduced to £3.50
Please be very cautious of the
“Yellow” app which is available to
download on smartphones and
tablets. The sole purpose is to
meet strangers online. There are
no checks on user’s age. A user
can connect with a stranger
simply by swiping right on their
profile picture. When both users
mutually “like” each other this enables them to instantly chat with this stranger. Android has rated the App
18+ and Apple have rated it 12+. “It has been Rated 12+ for the following: Infrequent/Mild Sexual Content
and Nudity”.
The NSPCC have said “Yellow’s settings that enable adults to view children, through a service blatantly
aimed at flirting and relationships, also creates an opportunity for sexual predators to target young people.
This needs to be urgently addressed”.

Isle of Wight Badminton Championships
Our Christ the King College Badminton players ventured to Cowes Enterprise College for the Isle of Wight Badminton Championships this week. We had two teams of boys and girls at KS3 and KS4.
The Key Stage 4 side began against Cowes in a thrilling match. Pair 1 of Nicholas Earley and Charlie Dyer lost 21-11 in their game. However, Thomas Timmons and Aaron Abraham almost caused a shock victory winning 21-13, meaning the boys lost by only 2 solitary points!
The Key Stage 3 side, made up of Sergi Carulla, Ben Timmons and Ryan Hughes, was incomplete, so they played some friendlies and lost to Cowes, but beat Medina.
The success, however, came in the girls’ category with the KS4 Girls being the only side entered quali-fied automatically to the next round.
The KS3 Girls made up of Isabelle Honnor, Lacey Gulliver, Lara Crouch and Sophie Bruce played against Cowes and the Island Free School progressing through to the next round in Hampshire in con-vincing fashion.
Well done to all students who took part in the IOW Badminton Championships
Mr Dye

U15s Girls Football v Cowes Enterprise College
On Wednesday, 25th January, Christ the King College U15 girls played a football match against Cowes Enterprise College, winning narrowly 2-1 with goals from Letitia Mackay (10EMW) and Alice Aldridge Snell (9ASU). The game was played in good spirits and bad weather, against a well organised and steady Cowes team. All the girls played well and kept the ball moving with good pace down the wings from Sophie Bruce (9ASU) and Alice Aldridge Snell. Mention must go to Abi Mouland (9JJU) in goal who made a string of fine saves. An important win that keeps us unbeaten this season. A tough game against Sandown is next. Mr Gifford.

Parliament Trip - Tuesday, 31st January
From a 4.00 am start, the day could only get better...and it did! We could not have visited Parliament on a better day to get the level of in-sight into its workings. After looking around its most iconic areas, like Westminster Hall where we stood on the spot that inspirational people like Barack Obama and Nelson Mandela stood. We then arrived at the House of Commons where we were lucky enough to listen to part of the Brexit debate. We heard David Davis speak on the Conservative Par-ty’s viewpoint of Brexit and we also heard the view from various mem-bers of the opposition. This was an exciting to experience as we got to hear various opinions first hand and it is such a relevant issue to all of us. So, not only was our parliamentary experience historically interest-ing, it also captured our interest in current affairs.
After parliament, we visited the Amnesty International Headquarters, a pressure group concerned with human rights violations around the world. We spoke to one of their lobbyists, Dan James, the son of one of the Amnesty International founders, Elwyn Jones. He spoke to us about his job of writing letters to perpetrators of human rights violations such
as torture or internment. This was a fascinating experience, speaking to someone who is so passionate about human rights, has saved many innocent lives and who has had such an interesting and inspiring life. It was encouraging to listen to someone who speaks up for those who cannot speak for them-selves. We looked at several cases of where Amnesty has had a great influence in cases of human rights abuses, where people have been saved from capital punishment or released from unlawful im-prisonment.
Both visits gave us an important look into how Parliament and Amnesty International are run. Many as-pects of the day were relevant towards our upcoming AS examination on units of Parliament and Pres-sure Groups. I would highly recommend this experience to others.

Isle of Wight Sports Hall Athletics Championships
Congratulations to the Year 8 Athletics team on winning the Island Sports Hall Athletics Championships on Wednesday, 1st February 2017, at Medina College.
The event comprised of 11 events; 6 track and five field. Athletes competed in up to five events over the competition. After the field events, Christ the King College were in second place by some 30 points. 3rd and 4th placed teams were close behind.
The track events saw a turn in fortunes with some outstanding team and individual performances. The girls competed first and won their opening race. Mabel Lewis, Caitlin Townshend, Eden Canning and Beth Sedgeley took a commanding lead and set the tone for the rest of afternoon races. Lacey Gul-liver, winning all three of her races, Mabel Lewis 1st and 2nd, Maddie Judd 2nd and Caitlin Townshend 1st.
The boys, in an incredibly close first race, were narrowly beaten on the line to 3 rd place. They reacted brilliantly though with Lucca Toms winning all three of his races and Adam Voller getting a 1st and 2nd. Special mention should go to Brandon Verstraeten who competed in 5 events and got a 3 rd, 2nd and finally in the relay, 1st place. An excellent result all round.
The students were an absolute credit to the College and themselves. Well done to them all!
